Seen one last Monday evening when I was out at the ducks in Tyrone. Won't have my first outing over the ground for another two weeks, so hopefully there will be lots more by then. I usually see the first of them around the start of November, so not that unusual to see one a week early.

read an article on woodcock society of ireland saying that although some woodcock fly by the full moon the majority of travelling is done by daytime hours .:)

Don't forget the all year residents.
Also says about some being ringed. Has anyone shot a woodcock with a ring on it? And would you have to report it then?

Be interesting to see the journey it took before it was shot.
Didn't someone shoot a duck on this last year and it turned out it was from Wales

Alot of snow and deep cold is forecast over mainland Europe over the next few weeks so there is the potential for a surge of woodcock into the country in the run up to Christmas. I'm headin down to my place in North Mayo for Crimbo so hope to have a few for the pot by the new year all going well:)

Didn't meet any woodcock this morning. Lovely morning to be out though.
Dog is really finding her nose. Put up a jack snipe and usually I wouldn't shoot a snipe but she worked well and deserved to see her work paid off. Went through hell to get it back and she eventually found it and retrieved to hand.
All in all happy with her progress.

Maybe I'm alone but if I shot 2 woodcock I wouldn't shoot anymore.

Tbh I'm bit annoyed at some lads shooting too much when they are out.

    what's too much!? obviously 7 between 2 lads?

If I stopped after shooting 2 birds Id have a very short day as would a lot of lads like me that invest a lot of money on gear and time training dogs!

7 between 2lads is not 2 much bcos there is days you would meet 15 and might only come away with 1 or none like. Myself and my friends were out yesterday and we met 12-14 roughly and 1 thats all we came away with and thats the luck on the day bcos woodcock shooting is hard but a very enjoyable sport.
