Was just about to post about this film. Saw a report on it today on Euronews. It looks good and as you say it does seem like a typical "Oscars" film.

    Looking forward to seeing it.

Just after watching this, its a very good movie. Sad, hard to watch, educational and emotional.

I watched this after American Hustle so it was good to see a proper movie and not fluff which is what I though American Hustle was.

Much better than American Hustle but then again that wouldnt be too hard ;)

McConaughey is a shoe in for an Oscar nomination, the Robert De Niro method school of acting is very much evident here.

    A decent 7/10

Brilliant movie with a career best performance from Matthew McConaughey, who is sadly been overlooked cause of Jared Leto's performance, which while more showy isn't quite as powerful for me as McConaughey. McConaughey really is turning into one of the best actor's around, if it wasn't for Chiwetel Ejiofor brilliant performance in 12 year a Slave I'd say he'd win the Best actor Oscar. The scene
When he realises in the library how he caught HIV is some of the best acting you see this year

Not a easy watch at all but with T-Rex on the soundtrack and some wonderful performances and deserving of it's praise unlike say American Hustle. 9/10 and I expect it to be in my top 10 at the end of 2014.

Jared Leto is a shoe in for best supporting imo, he completely steals it.

Good movie McCon (however u spell it) is turning up in a lot of gems in last year- Mud, Dallas Buyers Club and Wolf of Wall Street.

The weight loss for this movie would match Bales loss in the past, he will have to put up weight as Bale did for American Hustle to match it.

Good movie this one though, would recommend it and the Academy love movies with themes such as this. Though Gravity seems to be the awards darling so far.

It was 1 hour into the film and I was wondering when Jared Leto was going to make an appearance, then the penny dropped! :o

I suppose its a massive compliment to his performance

TBH I'm not sure I would have recognized him either, only reason I knew was because he was on John Stewart a few weeks ago and they showed a clip!

I really enjoyed it. Excellent performances which didn't feel 'showy' at all.

Having lost someone to AIDS many years ago it was a subject that was always going to affect me but I think it was well written and resisted the temptation to go for the easy emotion pulls which made it all the more powerful in my book.

Wow, amazing film. I think I need to re-watch this over the weekend.

I really want to see this. McConaughey is very underrated and he was brilliant in the last few movies I've seen him in, Paperboy was an excellent performance.

Jared leto was very good in I didn't recognise him in till I imdb the film and both deserve the Oscar ,great performances!!

Saying that I still think wolf of wall street is a better film hope that wins best picture

Well this was an unexpected joy, McConaughey is a triumph here, as is Leto.
Does a great job of conveying the paranoia with Aids in the '80's.
I much preferred the acting here to any of the other Oscar bait.

If you've held back on watching this I would set that right, 8/10.

The tv spot for this is just wrong, it makes the film out to be all action and wise cracking. I watched it, loved it, but thought it was a thoroughly depressing film that left me angry.

Thought the same myself, saw the film a few weeks ago and then saw the TV spot earlier and thought anyone looking to see a plucky funny film about dealing with AIDS might be disappointed.

Definitely going to watch this tomorrow, just watched Matthew Mcconaughey in True detective and he's brilliant in that as well.

Just saw this last night and was blown away by the brilliant performances from McConaughey and Leto. That scene where
Leto's character goes to speak to his father and his father says, "Lord help me," and Leto responds, "He is, I have AIDS," or something to that effect literally made me gasp out loud, the delivery was so powerful.

It was a compelling film, well worth a watch. McConaughey will likely be an Oscar winner for this and no doubt Leto will be.

They did the exact same thing for Behind the Candelabra. From the TV spot I thought it was going to be a comedy and was looking forward to watching it but the only funny bits in the movie were in that TV spot!

I found Behind the Candelabra pretty funny throughout.

    Was that just me?

Don't have the time to do an in-depth review but saw this and rather enjoyed it. There's little here that hasn't been done a dozen times before but it's an enjoyable film that doesn't dwell in the misery. Performances are excellent, though I did find Leto's performance to be over rated. He's rather excellent but I felt that the transformation is what's getting him so much acclaim.

The day after I saw the film I saw the trailer for it play before The Armstrong Lie and was surprised by how they film is being sold. From the trailer you expect some kind of fell good, rom-com about an aids patient finding love and getting into all kinds of comical misadventures. I assume that trailers have been edited so as to appeal to McConaughey's female fanbase who think his best work was in all those films where he played a rascal who was tamed by the love of some reporter writing an article on him.

I can imagine that audience might be very disappointed that
he doesn't get cured at the end!

I agree with this, while certainly not faulting his performance it's definitely not out of this world great. Leto has always had a sort of feminine look, as weird as that is to say, so it didn't take a whole lot to get that look IMO. Not faulting his performance, but like you say, a bit over rated.

    Excellent film.

At times I felt the performances were more interesting than the dialogue though, but the rest of the film more than makes up for that and so overall, I felt it to be a gem and hope to watch it again over the weekend.

McConaughey's physical transformation into this guy is amazing and his performance equally as impressive.

I hadn't seen nor read anything about the film before seeing it and so viewed Leto's performance without the baggage of hype or critique and all I can say is that his performance was stunning. It had little if anything to do with the fact that Leto has feminine aspects to his features (if indeed he does) although I'm sure that helped. No, what was amazing about his performance was how engrossing it was, how you didn't get the impression that this was an acting performance at all. It seemed effortless and therefore, utterly believable.

A shoe-in for Best Supporting Actor but a fully deserving one.

Powerful performance from McConaughey, having seen his competition for the Oscar already I think he deserves it more than any of them for this.

His improvisation with this character was excellent & his ability to inject a bit of nuance into the southern American man is never in question.

The film at times did go a little flat but I felt that was mainly down to Jennifer Garners character nearly boring me to death. The fact that this character never existed in real life only added to this.

We watched this last night, thought both actors performances were excellent and while I found it very sad and educational I actually found it a tad boring at times, my OH thought the same.

I'm sure it portray the paranoia that people had towards AIDS and it's victims though. Perhaps it was my mood last night but I was willing it to end!

Just back from this and really enjoyed it. Always a danger that a film like this collapses into melodrama or melancholy under the weight of it's subject matter, but this manages to get the balance just right. Really impressed with the performances of Leto, but more so McConaughey. The scene between Leto and his father is incredible but McConaughey is excellent throughout.

Great movie and great acting throughout. Couldn't believe how thin McConaughey was.

To think of all the fuss in the Irish media of late about some comments made on the Saturday night show and then you look at the abuse Ron Woodroof received by his so called friends, I think society has came on a long way since the 80's.

Caught this yesterday and thought it was very good; Matthew McConaughey continues to impress (pre-Killer Joe, I couldn't imagine myself ever wanting to watch a film starring him, yet now he's on my list of people to look out for on cast lists). Jared Leto was also pretty impressive here, though I suspect outshined slightly by McConaughey. The two had a good on-screen chemistry and in fact the only weak link in the cast was Jennifer Garner, who wasn't exactly bad, just not very good (to be fair, she's not given much to do except be a counterpoint to the Doctor Who's In Big Pharma's Pocket).

Tonally it reminded me a bit of Midnight Cowboy, although it's not as jet-black in its humour as that film. In saying that there were some laugh-out-loud moments (the conversation between Ron and Rayon about
Ron's office wall being painted red, and then having pictures of Marc Bolan on the all alongside Ron's girlie pictures
was hilarious, as was the later scene that calls back to it).

I had a little laugh at the poster of a Lamborghini Aventador behind Ron's desk in his office, a bit early give or take 25 years :D

Yes I though that didn't make much sense. It would have been more realistic if he was a healthy weight at the start and then gradually lost weight as the disease progressed. Surely that's the way it would work in reality? Maybe logistically that wasn't possible for them to film it in that way (time constraints).

If I remember right there's a shot of him going at it with someone and he looks much healthier, I guess they shot that pre or post weight loss.

Saw this at the weekend and I was disappointed. I found myself losing interest half way through. Mc Conaughey is brilliant, no doubt about that but I was left a little underwhelmed by Jared Leto's performance. I'd heard great things and he even walked away with the Golden Globe so I was looking forward seeing what he was like in this. But I just dont think it was a great performance, I mean it wasnt bad or anything, but the fact that he's the favourite to win the oscar over Michael Fassbender is mind boggling. Fassbender's performance is in a different league.
Average film with one above average performance.

He's had AIDS for quite a while by the start of the film (they give him 30 days to live) so it makes perfect sense for him to be so skinny from the outset of the story.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 11,106 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fysh

Also, in practical terms, the film was made in less than thirty days AFAIR, so they wouldn't have had time to get McConaughey to do the initial "normal weight" shots and then drop the weight, nor to put the weight back on afterwards and shoot scenes then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,113 ✭✭✭lukin

Yes but nobody said to him at the start "Jeez you got so skinny, what happened to you?" so the viewer was led to believe he was like that all the time and the weight loss was not due to his illness.
A minor gripe, it was still a good movie.

I don't see how the viewer was led to believe that. You don't need to have someone deliver such an on-the-nose line for people to put two and two together and realise that he looks the way he does because of the illness

If someone had said that to him at the start it would have been awful scriptwriting.
