The Mega Drive was released 25 years ago yesterday, so what are peoples favorite memories, games or funny stories about the console.

I still have mine and it works without a hitch, think the games that kept me entertained the most as a kid were the 3 in 1 games and the likes of Toejam and Earl, Micro Machines and Rock N Roll Racing.

I remember having to hide the 3 in 1 with Columns on it from my mother, she was addicted to the game, would finder sometimes still playing it in the morning when I woke up for school, she went nearly 48 hours straight on it one weekend.

Oh that Rock N Roll racing soundtrack was awesome, only recently got the game again after the original cartridge got smashed, Streets of Rage was another one with a great soundtrack.

    Memorable ones for me;
    • Toe Jam & Earl - first game I ever played on a MD
    • Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf - still yet to sit down and play the follow on games
    • Wiz 'n' Liz - fast jumping platformer!
    • Zero Tolerance - kinda'3D back when my world was 2D
    • Mutant League Hockey - bribe the ref!

An Everdrive cart brings all of those games to life :) great times

    Jungle Strike, Yes, awesome game!

Eternal Champions, Never played it, but wasn't there a superior 32X version?

Cool Spot, Lovely, one of those games that looked and moved like a cartoon, pen and ink animation, rather designed as pixels and sprites from the outset, a different more pleasing path that included Aladdin and Earthworm Jim, whatever about the gameplay and dodgy hitboxes, while in other areas they went down the prerendered route, with Donkey Kong Country, Vectorman and, later, even Mario Kart 64, not as nice at all in my opinion.

Golden Axe, I'm afraid I have to ask you to leave, I hope you enjoyed your brief stay with us here in A&R Towers, please remember us fondly and any of your belongings will be in a skip outside the backdoor, for collection later..... honestly, some people....

I'm half thinking of getting some everdrives next year maybe, though only for fan translations etc. If you can limit yourself to what you use them for they're pretty cool...dumping pages of roms on them though just takes from the enjoyment

No idea where most of my MD games ended up, had some real classics back in t'day:

    Golden Axe
    Strider
    John Madden's
    EA Hockey
Desert Strike (3 good EA games in a row!)
    Crackdown
Arcus Odyssey (really surprised there isn't more of fuss made of this game)
    ESWAT
    Castle of Illusion
    Megalomania
Fighting Masters (OK wasn't great but when fighting games were all the rage and there were literally none on consoles prior to SF2)

    Streets of rage
    Golden axe
    Sonic 1 and 2
    Desert strike
    Thunder force 4
    Micro machines
    Gun star heroes
    Good times indeed

they had a jap one so it must have been early enough.well a jap sonic anyway.
My uncle would cycle to the video shop and rent a game.play it for 10mins and cycle down and change it for another!
    he had altered beast too!

I remember wasting money in the arcade version too, mother of glob!
Sonic was a remarkable game, still is, apart from the fecking underwater Labyrinth Zone.... b@stards!

Have the mega drive collection on the PS3, damm 6-8 year old me could kick my ass, games I used to beat easily have became hard like Golden Axe, and do not get me started on the Chemical Plant Zone on Sonic 2.

Gods... classic bitmap brothers with crunchy techno soundtrack
Mega Bomberman...big hit even when I went to college..
    Shinobi's
    Mortal combat

Now those were Proper games despite the development of cgi

Bitmaps with Speedball 2 and Chaos Engine, brilliant ports from a fantastic career in Amiga development.

But the Micromachines series was ridiculously good fun, I have most of them in the collection, with the special carts with the extra controller ports, not to mention 2 people to a controller!

But Sensi Soccer and Cannon Fodder were incredible, not to mention the MD version of Syndicate, much better than the Snes edition.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,812 ✭✭✭✭evolving_doors

Ya speedball classic game alright...what was the chaos engine game about again? I think I had that game but can't remember

Top down shooter, you picked character classes at the start, very nice indeed.
I have it somewhere for both Amiga and MD

    Sonic 2
    Streets of Rage 2
    Rocket Knight Adventures
    Gun Star Heroes
    Shinobi 3

Brings back memories going into Xtra Vision of a Friday afternoon on the way home from school and renting a game for the weekend :o:D

40 million sold worldwide apparently, probably more than that as well. Megadrives are as common as CoD no scope videos on youtube soundtracked by 'Let the Bodies hit the floor'.

I remember as a kid getting the PSX , my mam tried to give my MD away, I wasn't happy!

Dunno if I had any sense of monetary worth for in the future, I just had so many good times playing and good memories of it (probably would have still played it tbh!) It was in pristine condition too, I've always kept my games and consoles in perfect condition since I was a kid.

She gave it away behind my back anyway, to my little demon of a cousin! "Sure why would ya need it with the new Playstation she said!"

The little fcker destroyed the thing, broke the joypads (one of which had auto button switches on it lol), he broke the cable at the back (which I think was prone to breaking anyway?) and lost all of the games....

Horrible death for a console that gave me soo much joy!

    RIP Megadrive :(

I was a child of the arcades so it was never in question what console I wanted for Xmas (my C64 had died and been replaced by a 2600, which was kind of **** for the most part). The excitement in 1991 when I got a machine, two joypads, Altered Beast and Golden Axe was overwhelming. Sure they weren't arcade perfect but they might as well have been after the 2600.

Followed that up with Revenge of Shinobi, which I was initially disappointed to see wasn't a port of the arcade game, but quickly learnt to love. I played it for 5 years until I sold my machine to finance a PSOne purchase. The night before I sold it was the first time I finished it properly (not knowing about the hidden POW right before Zeed so I had to try and get through the previous few rooms with all those flying ninjas without getting hit). Now that's replay value.

Think I got Wonderboy III: Monster Lair after Shinobi. People tend to rate the RPGs higher but I had some serious love for forced scrolling platformers. The music was incredible and the hard mode was beautifully rebalanced with different enemies which made it very enjoyable to master. The copy I picked up in Limerick was Japanese and my dad did some primitive console modding with a chisel (scratching the face of my machine in the process) to make it fit.

My folks went up to Dublin and bought me Sonic 2 on release day, completely without my knowledge. Almost as hyped as the day I bought the machine. The graphics were just incredible. Never liked the quasi 3d look the Sonic games took on after that and the levels got too long and meandering. The series peaked there as far as I'm concerned.

The other great thing about the machine was I got to know kids all over town. At the start it was mostly teenagers and I'd be cycling over to their houses and swapping what I had with almost total strangers for games that weren't very good. Who'd play Pat Riley College Basketball or Dark Castle for hours today? Well I played Pat Riley for weeks but Dark Castle was so bad I couldn't stomach it for long. Got loads of other good stuff like E-Swat, Outrun (again Japanese copy, how did these get to the West of Ireland?), Spiderman Vs Kingpin from the early era as well.

By 92 or 93 the video shops were doing rentals and I worked my way through pretty much every other game in the library. In those days you could even finish RPGs (if you were sick from school) in a week so I got a chance to play hundreds of games through. My local indie rental place were incredibly lax about late fees as well so you could keep games a week over and get fined 50p if you were polite and apologised. Nowadays you'd never have a chance to play every type of game because they're so full of bloat you'd never have the time.

Loving the love for most of these games here.

    MKII
    MK3
    Desert Strike
    Jungle Strike
Urban Strike (except the levels where you played as a person)
    WWE RAW
    WWE Royal Rumble
    General Chaos
    NBA JAM
    FIFA 95
    Alien Storm
    SOR2/3
    Theme Park
    Premier Manager 95
Sensible Soccer (spent ages re writing the players real names)
    Golden Axe
    Micro Machines
Rock n Roll Racing (an unexpected gem)
    Road Rash

There was a game that i cant think of, it involved skating and hitching on the back of cars through various cities a bit like road rash.

Why the hate? Golden Axe was about beautiful backgrounds, music and atmosphere. The gameplay in most scrolling fighters was always secondary to the spectacle. Plus you had the whole riding dragons which was OMG dual welding or achievement unlocked to a child of the 80s. The very idea of projectiles in scrolling fighters was incredibly addictive. Something the likes of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs would go to build on but I can't think of another scrolling fighter had such dramatic backdrops.. how do you top fighting skeletons on a giant eagle?

Flash cart, you can put roms onto it and play the games without ever needing the carts themselves

My best friend had a megadrive during the early 90's. I had a snes so we used to swap consoles sometimes and play them in each others houses. Remember playing streets of rage, sonic, zombies ate my neighbours and some other stuff :)
