Yeah plus the northern ireland edition.
I'm thinking of going back to the paper edition find that its easier to flick through it and read what i want.

I do most stuff on the computer now really so it'd be handy. Two pluses for the digital edition, no going to the local shop for it (no being ignored at the counter, suffering grumpy bollixs doing stock taking), and herself not giving out about "all them papers" :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,506 ✭✭✭MfMan

A third plus is that it is easier keep old electronic versions rather than paper ones. Another is that it can be downloaded on Wednesday night giving one a 12-hour headstart on the printed paper.

Two minuses are that pictures in particular aren't as clear in definition and that articles spread across 2 pages can be more disjointed to read rather than in the paper version.

I have tried the digital edition for this year but have found that I tend to put off reading it a lot, to the point where I have a number of past versions still to read. For some reason when I have the paper edition I make more of an effort to read it in time.

This might be a stupid question but do you have to pay for the online version ?

Is it in pdf format? Wouldn't mind switching over either as find it hard throwing the paper version away!! :-) plus there seems to be a €40 saving if my calculations are correct.

Got an iPad there a while back, and was thinking the online IFJ, would suit it nicely.
Like the idea also, of making a once off payment for the Journal for the entire year, and having a rectipt for the expense for the accounts.

2 ways of looking at the same thing. 1st how do they limit exploitation i.e. is it limited download to one PC? 2nd - If I go it, could I view it on my PC, laptop and mobile device?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,422 ✭✭✭just do it

You can buy a 7 day pass for €2.60. Not a bad way to trial it. Really need to be looking at it on the PC. There is an example version on their website - worth a look.

When you subscribe do you get full access to the archives? I notice when you find an old article via google the tables and pictures are usually missing.

I haven't read them all, there's bound to be duplication. Even look at these forums, same questions often come up, I'd say impossible to avoid.

Does anybody know what the story with their new website is? Have a subscription to the PDF version, but it won't give me access to the new site with the same login. Also some of the content on the new site is free, but doesn't seem to be updated as regularly as Agriland so what's the point? However the review of the bale handlers last week was worth the subscription!

Is the PDF and the new website the same content? Ended up registering on the website, but had the 10 articles viewed in a half an hour, so no more articles for the next month!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 pokeeffe1

    Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, ten articles free per month once you register on www.farmersjournal.ie and beyond that a subscription is required (similar to walking into a shop and browsing before paying)
You are correct - all content from the paper is on www.farmersjournal.ie plus some additional daily free content - mostly farmer generated. From January, the flow of daily content will increase.
Subscribers to the PDF digital replica edition are now entitled to an upgrade by simply logging onto
    www.farmersjournal.ie/forgot.php
and updating their password by following the link.
Any issues, call 01-4199578 or email subs@farmersjournal.ie or tweet @FJhelp

Crossakiel, feel free to give me a call on 01-4199539 or email pokeeffe@farmersjournal.ie and I will gladly discuss these issues in more detail with you.

Can an individual issue be purchased as opposed to subscribing for the year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 580 ✭✭✭HillFarmer

Living down under here in Sydney I find it a gift. great to be able to search the old editions also. I find the digital issue very good, just wish the Journal team would broaden its content for farmers like myself, eg hill setup, upland grazing etc.

Yes - €2.70 for one week which gives full access to everything, including the PDF replica going back to November 2010. So over 150 weeks to browse :)

Not 100% certain, but I don't think so.
PDF edition hosted on Pagesuite, which does allow you to download the full edition and read later offline.

Looking through the edition last night it could be renamed Dairy Farmers Journal.

Nothing against the teat yankers :D but it's gone awful lopsided.

Are you encouraging readership to move to the digital edition Pat? I subscribed to it for this year, but don't think I will renew for 2014.

Pros; It's much easier to keep electronic back editions rather than paper ones.
It's quicker and easier also to search through editions for relevant key words.

Cons; Photos on the PDF are nowhere near as clear as on the paper edition.
Articles spread out across a couple of pages are easier read in the paper edition (as you're reading left to right, rather then up-down).
I find I make more of an effort to read the paper in a timely fashion; with the PDFs I sometimes have a backlog built up to get through.

Each to their own I guess.

No, the product available now is quite different.

The digital PDF edition is just one part of the new overall package now. All the content is online and can be viewed on phones, tablets etc. Photos much better now.

You can also save articles to your own folder.

Over time, I would expect that people will only use the PDF for a quick "flick through" to see the "paper", or to browse the archive of previous years.

This week is my first time to use the online edition. I like it so far, relatively ease to scroll through and just read what I find relevant to myself. Missed not being able to do the crossword or write little notes on the sides of the pages of articles which interest me. Cheaper, cost $3.70 as opposed to the $6 I give for the print out here. Easier accessed and no papers lying around.

@pokeefe It would be a nice addition to be able to save relevant articles or stuff I would like to read again in a separate area/folder

Just use print screen/screen capture. If your on a computer you can call name it whatever you want and it'll be easy to find. If your on mobile/tablet the screen captures can easily be sorted into folders..
