    Hi,
My 6 year old child has a verruca.
We went to the chiropodist and she said it can take up to a year to get it removed.
And she wants us to visit each week (€20 per visit) for her to put some acid and a bandage on it.
I don't like the thought of having to pay up to €1,000 to get it removed.
anyone any suggestions? I'm in Galway
We asked the GP about freezing it off and he said they don't tend to do that these days for kids.
    Thanks,
    Pa

Op my son has just finished with the Chiropodist and his veruccas were really bad - he had several of them. It took 4 visits and they are gone. You can try the over the counter stuff but that seems to take much longer.

Cutting wheat out of my diet resolved any verruca/wart issues I had years ago.

    No way? That's really interesting.

The over the counter stuff worked for any kids I've dealt with having them.

My wife mentioned something about using duct tape on the sole of the feet to treat verrucas, Dr Pixie McKenna had it on her tv show last night about unusual cures

Honestly, had some other skin ailments that all cleared up within 2 months of kicking processed food mostly.

I have a slight allergy to wheat or gluten whatever, the doctor put it down to my immune system had more resources to combat other ailments when it didn't have to worry about the gluten.

Cotton wool soaked in apple cider vinegar taped over the verruca every night should kill it off within a week or two.
The verruca will turn black and die off from the vinegar.

Verrucae can be tricky little buggers. The majority of them resolve by themselves and disappear over a 18 - 24 month period but that's often no consolation to those suffering. Also once they're gotten rid of, they can reoccur as it's a virus that has entered the system. Anecdotally they tend to stay away more as we get older and if we have a robust immune system (though that's not a certainty.)

There's no definitive method to get rid (in my experience.) Salicylic acid treatments can work, as can cryotheraphy (freezing) and there are home treatments as well as clinical versions of these treatments that a doctor / podiatrist may administer.

The duct tape method has been shown to work in some instances though again it's not definitive and I think it's dependent on the type of duct tape used (or the glue in the duct tape.) Depending on the nature of the verruca, there's a treatment called the "multiple puncture technique" but it's best you discuss that with your doctor as it involves local anesthetic.

If I were you I'd discuss the range of options with your doctor and see what s/he thinks is a suitable course of treatment specific to your child.

Mods - I hope I've not overstepped the mark in what I've outlined above.

Holy ****, €1,000? Was she wearing a mask and a stripy jumper? Just go to the chemist.

Well, €20 a week for a year, if that's as long as it takes.

But it wouldn't take that long and a tube of salicyclic acid-based gel from a chemisty would see the child sorted in 6 weeks at the most.

There is a chance that the choropotist said that because they can see that it is huge and very deep rooted, but it is worth trying home treatment first,

As was said before, over the counter verruca treatments are widely available in chemists. I have treated kids verrucae many times.

    Ask in your local pharmacy.

If the child doesn't like the treatment, an easier and slightly more expensive OTC treatment is to buy corn caps. They are plasters with salicylic acid in a corn ring in the plaster. Its makes treatment much easier.

I've had a few verruca in my time :(, and depending on the type what is visible on the surface may only be 5/10% of the verruca, so if it's something like a planters/mosaic verruca/wart you could be looking at something the size of a 2 euro coin which is about the size of a pea on the surface!

    Try a different chiropodist!

I had a massive yoke on my foot, about the size of a 5c coin by the time I bothered to go actually see a specialist. I had tried wartner, bazooka and also that faux-nitrogen freezing kit and all to no avail. The chiropodist said that because I had a massive callous over the wart, none of that stuff would work. After trimming and filing the callous down, I applied salicylic acid on it twice a day and filed it down with an emery board. After around a month the entire thing just fell out as I was coming out of the shower, leaving a painless but fairly large sized hole on the sole of my foot.

I was big into swimming as a child and always got them. Freezing them off seemed to do the trick!

Had a really bad veruca on the ball of my foot as a child. Managed to get rid of it by soaking my foot every night in warm water for a while before applying Salactol gel to it. Took a few weeks but it finally fell out, leaving a large hole in the ball on my foot which filled in pretty quick.

    This is the stuff

    Hi Pa,

Where is the verruca? Verrucas are contagious and generally spread into the area. I believe best solution is GP.. It is faster and the less expensive solution.. Some health insurances cover some part of procedure.. It is a virus and quite common.. Hope my post will help.

    Good luck on that!
