One of my freinds asked me to put up a post here.
They have applied to work for Dunnes Stores as part of there Christmas staff in one of the shops.
They would like information re what they could be asked at the interview.
They would also like to know what they pay would be, what type of hours they offer staff doing this along with any other infomation fellow bordies could give.
Has anyone here done Christmas work and got offered more hours at a later date?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

I worked with them as a student about 3 years ago during the X-mas period.

The store was outside of Dublin and the whole interview process was very informal. Standard interviewing questions like, tell me a bit about yourself or why are you studying that course in college? It was all pretty easy-going.

Pay at the time was around 9.00 per hour, however it might be a little different now. Hours where around 25 to 30 hours a week but depending how busy they got, you could work more.

I got offered a Christmas contract with them, it ran from the end of November to December 24th. I was given a further 6 month contract after this but thankfully I got something a lot better.

It was hard work at times and I wasn't especially treated very well by the managers but it was a temporary job while in college.

They tend to prefer people who have already worked for them before because at the time a good few in the induction had previous experience with them and the HR Manager informed us also.

I worked there over Christmas 2 years ago.
Pay was just over €10 an hour.
The interview was very nice - just basic stuff like asking about me, college, hobbies.

I didn't really find the managers friendly at all, but every store is probably different.
    The staff were grand though.

As far as I can remember, I got around 17-20 hours a week.
Loads of us temporary staff got called back in Jan/Feb for a further contract.

I was also thinking about applying to dunnes stores for some part time work during college but hearing all the bad about how managers treat people putting me off a bit. I have heard a good few people say the same thing that the managers dont treat well why is this think? the pay seems good enough there tough

I worked with them for 30 years. The quality of their managers isn't great when dealing with staff but you'd get some decent ones too. On average, you'd probably get about twenty hours per week but that could be more closer to Christmas. The pay is about as good as you'll get for that kind of work. The trickiest thing is being polite to cranky customers.

Address to HR manager. Managers (a fair few of them) can be rude and just plain stupid at times. The good ones are generally a pleasure to work with/for.You're not very likely to get full time, but if you get Christmas work, it'll probably be at least 20 hrs per week, and if they keep you on afterwards it can be a handy income until you graduate.

My friend is a manager for them
Her rate of paying is shocking considering how long she has been with them and the hours she works. I know she is expected to stay late until the job is finished when closing up regardless of roster time. But she gets no overtime for this and rarely gets the hours back. She has sometimes commented that per hour worked, her take home pay doesn't actually differ much from the girl on the till -- it seems to be extremely demoralising. I can't comment on her manner at work cos I've never worked for her :-) but I can only say from a friends point of view, she gets extremely stressed
I think they did try to recruit managers lately but candidates walked away from it when they heard the low re numeration and long hours of work - apparently they'd get more money at the rival supermarkets with better terms/conditions to boot.

I've worked for them for 10 years, your gonna get good and bad managers in every line of work, I'm lucky to have worked under the same manager all this time so it's been fine

Hi guys I had an interview last Wednesday for Dunnes christmas staff. Interview was a breeze but it seemed that the manager is very interested to contact references. It was the same with the other HR in a different Dunnes too. My friend had the same interview for the same contract there.

Anyway, does anyone know how long it takes for them to get back to you to let you know whether your hired or not? It's all I'm thinking about :/ :P the manager didn't make herself clear when I asked that in the interview.

It was a very brief interview. Took about 10minutes. Very simple questions. The manager basically asks you questions from reading the application form they get you to fill about right before the interview in the waiting room. It's just transferring your cv on their application sheets. I remember some questions such as 'tell me about yourself' 'I see your in college, tell me about the course' what are the progression links from this course' 'what are you going to do after this course' 'what were your duties in your previous work place' , 'do you think team work is important'. The interview was based on these questions and a few more similar ones. They were the only topics discussed in the interview. Just know your CV well and make sure you put down references with correct details. She asked me if its okay to contact them.

There were some people not dressed in the slightest way professional! Make effort but don't suit up. Someone and I honestly taught they uncomfortable in it and OTT

Yeah I presume all Dunnes are in the hiring process right now. I heard someone had an interview for the same position as me the day after mine. The HR told me they are taking on 100 for christmas so she's going to have loads of interviews.

Oh and thanks for the good luck! :)

Hope would not hire me cause of this. Good idea thanks very much i like to make bit of a effort and dress up shows good impression .

Defo let me know how you get on or if reply private mail me if want :)

Just wanted to say thank you for all the feedback in this thread. I had my interview this morning for Christmas staff in Dunnes. It was mostly an informal chat about my CV, work experience (told her what I did), College (Why did I choose my degree). I just have to wait for her to contact my referees and then I'll get a response. Fingers crossed. :)

Update: After interviewing today, got a call just there offering me a Christmas job. :D

As and ex manager for Dunnes I can tell you we are not all dickheads and most of the time the managers being dicks are out under preassure from senior management to act like that, anyway good luck in your interviews and hopefully you enjoy the xmas music being blasted :pac:

So I have my induction on Saturday (9 to 5) and I was told to dress smart casual. I was going to wear black trousers and black shoes. But what type of top should I wear? A shirt? Hoody? A shirt with a jumper?

Just wondering, do you get a phone call back if you don't get the job to inform you that you didn't, or is it only if you get the job they ring you? I had an interview yesterday and was told they should hopefully get back onto me within three or four days

Very much depends on the attitude of the HR manager. Some are very good about informing interviewees; others just leave them to figure it out for themselves.

I had an interview for dunnes store, and I got refused why? because I think I was not quite ''smart'' for stupid manager. She asked me very smart question such as like:

''WHY YOU LIKE WORK IN TEAM?''

I was so confused and I answered - because I like to, and she dosent like it...great only one question.

I want also admit that before interview I was sitting next of some ''clever guy'' who dosent know what is a passport and he asked the manager, and guess what? he got a job.

Your attitude shows why you didnt get the job, while the answer because I like to is a lazy answer.

No Im not lazy this is certain, I was not prepare for that kind of stupid question thats why I answered

Jez man. Lets assume u are on your second interview, in uncomfortable place and you answered on all question correctly and suddenly manager asks you do you like working in team? - you answered yes I like working in team, for me its more effective than working alone (yes THIS IS MY ANSWER IF U HAVENT GET IT) and she asks you WHY? - So you would be putted in shock because you answered on that question before.

Now you get it why am I angry ? or still not?

Well as someone who got the job and went onto be a manager shows I know the answer! They want you to say I like to mix with people, I like helping people, I like liaise with my manager etc they are all miles better than your answer!!

Also they asked WHY and not DO you like working in a team so they expect reasons, at least passport boy knew his stuff.

    You didn't understand the question.

You need to go to your local library and borrow a book about Interviews and appropriate answers to typical questions.

Had an interview with them last year and was appauled at how rude and blunt the manager was. I was on a gap year at the time and she basically made it clear she thought I was an idiot for taking the year off education. She really didn't seem to have any interest in allowing me to speak and kept asking questions and then cutting me off. Came out of there feeling like utter crap and vowing to never apply there again. Well not that branch anyway... may be different elseware

Is working in the deli department all behind the hot counter and making sandwiches etc. or does it involve any stocking shelves?

Behind the counter, maybe the odd time helping out on the floor.
