I'm not superstitious but the wiki on that place in London is pretty creepy.
Unless those stories about those suicides are bollox.

The card game story was edited by the Tottenham family to include the devil to avoid the shame in those days of an unmarried daughter with child by a stranger.

What is true however, is the skeletal remains of a child found in the walls of the tapestry room. This is believed to be the remains of Anne Tottenhams child.

The tour is well worth the fee and very informative. They dont fill you up with bull, and give you both the story and the facts.

I am absolutely petrified of the dark. If I go to the toilet during the night I bring a torch until I can reach the landing light.

Theres no way I could do it, unless I could bring 1 other person!

Whatever about the devil story being true or false, theres definitely something very unnerving about the place, I have been there twice now on tour and each time felt a horrible atmosphere from both the Tapestry Room and the "Long Mile" corridor near the end. Apparently a lot of religious statues were desecrated years and years ago and were kept out of sight so nobody could see the headless statues. The place has a horrible history going back centuries and there has been quite a number of unexplained deaths in different parts of the house.

So to answer your question....NO! Even the current owner (who claims not to believe any of the stories) refused to spend the night alone unless he had his big dog with him all night, and he said afterwards that the place has a visible energy....

Have you done the tour recently Wanderer? Was very disappointed in the tour, especially at the end of the tour when they tried to put a funny spin on it. I was reading your comments on an other thread about your tour experience and its like we were in two different places/two different tours!

Hi wendydoll, I did it in August this year with a few mates who had never heard of the place, I personally could take the devil stories with a pinch of salt but whatever happened in the Tapestry Room just turned my blood cold, I couldnt bear being in that room! Some rooms were just odd not scary but that last walk down the long corridor I felt eyes were watching me. That was my own experience anyway, I have read different accounts from other people. :D

Loftus Hall do several types of tour so its very possible that people experienced different tours. I personally had a private tour with my wife and 1 guide, we had the historical tour which covered both the legend, the very well done special effects devil scene, and the background to the house.

I agree 100%. The tapestry room is the most eery and chilling room in the place, second to Anne Tottenhams bedroom.

While we were there the security guy was doing his rounds with a german shepherd and the dog was not going into the tapestry room for anything despite throwing his ball in there.

Yes even taking away the staff who would jump out at you, the Tapestry Room has a very, very strange vibe to it. Apparently the room was boarded up for years and when it was a hotel it was only cleaned once a month, the place was that unnerving to be in. Hard to describe to people who havent set foot in it but you know what I mean!

Yes, the Tapestry room has to be experienced to be believed. No easy way to describe it.

[EDIT] Also the order of Nun's that lived in Loftus hall kept the tapestry room locked permanently

I like spooky things. I'm a big fan of the Ghost Hunters programme. Usually I watch a few back to back episiodes when my husband is on nightshift and then feel jumpy all night. Fortunately I have my furry felines to keep the ghosties away:)

Be warned its a horrible room, the house itself isnt exactly welcoming but the Tapestry Room is the heart of it. Whatever happened in Loftus Hall happened there.

Ah that explains it so. Might arrange another tour after the Halloween hype.

Didn't get an eerie feeling in the Tapestry room at all. Apart from it being cold. There must be something wrong with me :o

If the child is buried in the wall (what age child?) you can guess.

Anne Tottenham was kept locked up there for 10 years and had her child ripped out of her and murdered then walled up in the room, only to be found decades later during a renovation. Anne's body was so disfigured from being strapped into her bed and spending years in one position they couldnt get a normal shaped coffin for her. She begged the devil to take revenge on her family, the "church" part of the mansion is right next to the Tapestry room and has unexplained scratchings on the scriptures, quite a sight to see..

I've been to Loftus Hall a few times, the first time was in the late eighties. It's a spooky place alright, it has a weird atmosphere. I think the setting helps that, it stands alone in a very bleak and barren landscape just down from Hook lighthouse. The estate is huge and stone walls surround it, with a few big wrought iron gated entrances. The house has some pretty weird gargoyles, I would have expected pics of those somewhere in this thread. I took a tour of the place years ago, it has an amazing staircase that was shipped from Italy when the house was built, and the downstairs tiled floors are something to see too. They used to let groups of people stay the night, I don't know if they still do.
I used to have a drink there the odd time, when the place had a bar. I saw nothing strange in the house anytime I was there, but it does have a strange feel to it and there are weird temperature changes throughout, i.e. warm in one room, freezing the next. I like the place. It looks impressive sat there in that landscape. I'd stay there no problem.
sister stayed the night last year or the year before. Wouldn't be into it myself but think she just got a few cans and got messy and passed out.

I've also being intrigued by Loftus Hall. I've read thread over in the Paranormal section and since then I've also wanted to visit.

Don't think I'll spend a night on my own, maybe with one or two more.

Do they do tours throughout the year, or is it only certain times?

If I remember correctly, the original building burnt down and/or was demolished. The structure there now is not the original Loftus so the card playing Devil will not be visiting anyone there.
your right, burned down and then demolished and rebuilt

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

I was in it before it closed down years ago. It certainly stands out in the flat landscape around it. I have always found it a discomforting place-and that was before I heard the stories. I am of the "ná dean nós, ná bris nós" heritage -don't make or break a tradition -my mother is full of all kinds of piseogues ,but I would be far more sceptical.

There was some kind of tradition relating to the number of windows to the front of the house being some kind of diabolic sign, though I don't remember it.

Whether you believe in things going bump in the night or not, it is wonderful to see the building once more open and the magnificent stairway being saved.
Photos here of the house before it was bought.
