    Cars. :pac:

Eh, Japanese, petrol, low, fast and loud. :D

    Edit for the the poll.

First out, I'd be all about getting the car going, stopping and changing direction fast and safely. After that's sorted I'd work on the looks but looks are definitely important to me.
Function over form, not the other way round. :)

Too many drinks tonight? :D What do you mean?

I love small diesel engines and no spec :D

I like cars to be totally factory original or as close as reasonably possible. Most people think it's shockin' ghey but there you go :)

Me too, like it close to what the original designer had in mind. My exception is that I don't mind someone updgrading items on the car to match the next model, that's allowed :D.

I don't know if an alfa 156 v6 is a sleeper or not (has scared a few cars though that think its a 1.6 Tim spark.)

Personally for me it has to be fast. I want the body to look well as well but upgrading suspension and brakes will be done before the bodywork is done as it'll be funner to drive. :)
I'd take a fast sleeper over a slow looker any day.

On the factory original, I'll keep the interior and exterior as original as possible, but I will improve the cars handling etc.

If you want a car to look like the designer wanted, then you should by no means keep it standard. :p

No no, I take it as it is, including all of the design compromises and weaknesses. I'm not sure why I like cars like that but at the end of the day the manufacturer was happy to sell it like that so I'm happy t drive it like that:)

    I liked my volvo,

luxury and comfort with plenty of extras, but with 180bhp from a 2L turbo engine resulting in 155MPH on the motorway with very little noise !

i also like off roading !

i actually got that from the volvo on the motorway a few times !

it was electronically limited to 155mph

I think I would believe Parkers over a claimed 20 mph discrepancy to be fair! 155mph is usually BMW/Merc/Porsche/Audi etc territory. Especially in the late 90's cars.

I've an 01 SAAB 9-3 (parked up for the moment). Engine was supposed to be cured of it's sludge issues, but SAAB messed something up in the paperwork, so when the engine went a few years back, SAAB replaced it for free. Couldn't find the standard engine so they put the 205 bhp lump in it.

Last owner got it up to 225 bhp with some modest tuning, nothing too wild. At the moment it sits on the bog standard cheapest alloys that SAAB have, it's an auto and is pretty lethal in a straight line.

Neighbour has an 08 325i and the SAAB is faster which is nice. Saab has no outward mods, no plastic bits, no stickers, no tints, just a seriously fast accelerating car on very nondescript wheels. Very comfy too. :)

Book says it is not possible, by some margin.
User claims it, but it is not verifiable.
Hmm. Much as it pains me to do (:D)so I will agree with Muppetcheck on this

    The 180bhp 2.0t Volvo won't do 155mph.
    I had one.

Sleeper car for me especially Volvo t5s or R cars.

Top speed usually has more to do with gearing than power. My race car is geared for about 135mph. I want to peg that back to around 115mph though

Driving along at 155mph in a volvo with relatively little driving experience is thick at best. Anybody at that shouldn't be allowed share the roads with the rest of us.

Was that directed at me? I wasnt condoning his behavior I was just commenting that it would be possible with some mods.

Obviously you could just gear it longer to get a higher top speed but there are easier ways.

Not if you have a relatively final gear, you'd want to be pushing the box so hard it'd explode to gain another 20+mph I'd say.

second user in a week to claim similar.

just gearing longer will only in rare times result in higher top speed, most engines not have the power to reach higher rpm in top gear.

155 indicated on the speedo or actual 155? My cars top speed is reckoned to be 151mph. I doubt it would actually do it. Speedo is about 5% out anyway

To the above two posts, this is why I said that there were easier ways. I don't think 20mph gain is possible through longer ratios but a gain is possible. Increasing or adding turbo power or a supercharger is the quickest way to bhp and top speed increases
    corktina wrote: »

Mine is pretty accurate at top speed. Maximum a couple of km out even at 200 kmh, as per a satnav. My golf on the other hand used to be out by almost 10 mph once you hit 90 mph

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

To get that extra but if too end, with an already powerful car there is no easier way than changing a cog.you can add another 100bhp but once the box hits its threshold it's not going any faster.
There's a reason drag boxes are made so that you can change final drive in a matter of minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭thecomedian

    Anyway a standard 180bhp Volvo won't do 155.
    From what I had a 247bhp might get 157/8 and a 230bhp about 153, 155 at a struggle from what I've read.
Both were not heavier than a S80.

Speedo was wrong or it was modded.

Thats a fair point about the speedo i had forgotten... i never tested using GPS or anything

if the speedo was 10% off then 155mph on the dash would be 140mph in reality.

Just thinking of the poll..... 3rd option doesn't make sense to me. Can't be a mix of both, subtle mods would have been politically correct!

    To me:

    Sleeper

Show car (if you could call this heap one :pac:)

    A mix....?

That last one is neither a sleeper or a show car.

I wouldn't go to any show that had that kind of Barrys stuff like in the second one.

Imo top speed has more to do with power than gearing. Very few cars will redline 5th/6th, like my gsxr its geared for 186 but will only do 166.

Basically if you dont have the power a higher gear wont help

Peak power limits top speed, ultimately.

If a yoke is not geared such that it's putting out peak power as it's doing it's top speed, then the top speed will be further limited.
