Heard about this but didn't know what he said. Wasn't expecting it to be as harsh as that!

He must be a boards user

He wrongly voiced his opinion, he has publicly apologized & that should be the end of it.

    |If I was in his position I would have stood my ground but he has a reputation to keep (I don't really). Regardless, I know there are plenty who would agree with what he said, so hardly a controversial opinion at the end of the day.

I don't understand why people care about things like this just because it's someone mildly famous.

I wonder at what point these things become 'incitement to hatred'?

He outed himself on Twitter as a racist. He probably thought he would get lots of retweets and high fives for his post. He apologised after a lot of responses instead giving him flack for his post.

He can't unsay what he said and his apology means nothing as this is obvisously how he thinks and feels. His apology is just damage limitation in case he loses his funding or any of his sponsors drop him over his racism and the negative publicity it will bring.

Hero to Zero in a single tweet.

Great shame. Until now, I had always thought of him as someone who kept his feet on the ground.

Remember it was Roma robbers who pinched his gold medel a week or so ago so I would not blame him one bit for being upset with that lot.

Fair dues to him for speaking the truth a Cork legend loved by all down here.

    Nonsense,

Most people will have sympathy for what he said, even if they would never say it publically.

Regardless of what "most people" think, racists tweets are a bit of an own goal. I've never seen someone enhance their reputation through casual racism on Twitter. Can't believe someone could be this stupid.

It's hardly a tweet from a fast walker that will incite people to hate the Roma. It's not a stretch to say they're hated throughout Europe by large amounts of people, and whether or not you agree with the reasoning behind that, it's not Rob Heffernan's doing.

I meant at what point would it become a criminal matter, as we do have laws regarding incitement

Well this is what Rob Heffernan tweeted.

I have heard a lot worse from 'professionals' carrying out their daily duties so I have. The only difference in them not being publicly slated is that they never tweeted their personal opinions online like Rob did. It will be very difficult to shake this racist tweet by him, very difficult! My own opinion on him has been reduced substantially and I know I'm not alone either and the other 'professionals' know my personal opinion on them & know I see them as horrible individuals!

Shame on Rob! Times they are a changing and throwing out racist comments or slurs no longer receive the same 'praise' or hi-five replies as they once did!

It wasn't the smartest thing he ever did, but to suggest he has gone from "Hero to Zero" (as was stated in the post I quoted) is a gross exaggeration.

He elevated his status in recent times. If people who now worship this man and sees this man as an idol see his tweet and no apology following it, it will only end in more people following his lead. That is one downward slope that cannot be started! Incitement to hatred; or racist comments or slurs cannot be tolerated by anyone, particularly by those who are seen as idols or mentors.

One of his most prized possessions was stolen by a member of a group of people that an awful lot of people have very little time for. I don't think he should be crucified for being pissed off with what happened and making his opinion known. For all you or I know it could have been said in the heat of the moment. It's amazing the way people will condemn him for making this comment, but will defend these people to the hilt and shut eyes to what goes on around them.

Which is the problem, he is now marked in the minds of many as at best a bit of a tit and a worst a racist who has revealed himself.

Like I say stay off twitter - its nearly guaranteed to make a fool of you sooner or later.

Unless he openly threatens them, I hope never. Saying you want to see the back of someone shouldn't be a crime. You shouldn't be forced to like anyone for fear of the courts.
