would the Kent State University killings be a good topic for my RSR even though Vietnam is a case study??

You could definitely do it if you wanted, as the course doesn't actually cover the Kent State shootings at all, so it's fair game.

The only problem that could arise is the background to the shootings, you wouldn't be able to go into much detail of the war as it's the case study, it'd have to be a brief overview.

It's probably safest to stay away from the case studies, and pick something you're interested in, and make sure there's loads of material available to write about it.
