Promiscuity in songs

I could have picked any song, many worse songs actually, but I picked this one because it just appeared on my news feed.

Anyway. I don't like promiscuity in music for several reasons. Firstly, let me say my reasons are not prudish or puritanical. This sort of music is basically along the lines of "lets talk about fucking all night long and put a beat behind it". It is pathetic.

Using this song as an example:
Doctor, doctor, need you back home in bed
    Doctor, doctor, where you at?
    Give me something
You got that kind of medicine that keeps me comin'

    My body needs a hero
    Make me come alive
Come on and turn me on
    Touch me, save my life
Come on and turn me on

It's falsifying some sort of patient doctor scenario, while actually being about sex. It's a tautology.

Sex sells, and that's where my issue is. Music should not have to use sex to sell. Doing show simply highlights that the music is shit. The thought of 4 or 5 year old kids in their parents cars listening to this stuff is a bit sad too.

If this song comes on when your young son or daughter is in the car, will you explain to them that sex sells, it makes you money. What kind of message does that send?

I think it's a good thing. It's made it far easier to avoid **** music.

I always thought it was "gimme some head" and not "give me something". Awkward, making those kind of lyric mistakes while singing along

This is an important issue. I'm very angry and frustrated. I'm going to get everyone on the boards to rise up against this devilish carry-on. We shall be united in our disgust and morality. Buddy Holly/Elvis Presley/The Beatles/Led Zeppelin/George Michael/Tupac/Slim Shady/Nicki Minaj are corrupting our children.

    Something must be done!

    I like your strategy OP.

In order to stop people using sex to sell records we should all find sexually suggestive records and to watch and share the youtube video on a popular website such as boards.ie, thus increasing its youtube views, and enriching the artists.

The artists will then have a comfortable lifestyle and will no longer need to release suggestive records to make money. It's foolproof!

That song is about a scientist creating robotic life and should be admired for delving into the tough issues about whetheran android being "turned on" grants it rights. Heaving hitting stuff.

In order to show my disdain for the song, it's necessary to show the song to others. Not doing so makes no sense. How can you possibly talk about something you don't like without showing that something to your audience?

That blister you speak of must be close to your prefrontal cortex. You might want to get that looked at.

That's the falsification of it. You've fallen for their trap. If you really think the song is not about sex you are deluded.

with some dope and some guns and
    I'm f***in' with them 'ho's

    Rollin' in them cars,
    drinking Cristal at the bars,
    doin' crack off her back
while she's f***in' with my bros."

Stick a beat behind that. Boom, top 10 hit.

I wrote a song about the plight of the sapphire unicorn during the Unicorn Civil War. And another one from the perspective of a ham, cheese and onion sandwich that knows it's about to be eaten

They weren't very well received in professional circles. Apparently they were "difficult to relate to" and "people don't like songs they can't understand". So the folks who churn out popular music like to stick to safe topics, such as sex, money and starships.

    I don't know, myself.

Some songs were so notorious that the PMRC (Parents' Music Resource Centre) placed them on a list called "The Filthy Fifteen". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filthy_Fifteen#Actions

    The songs were:

    Black Sabbath - 'Trashed'
Mary Jane Girls - 'Into My House'
    Venom - 'Possessed'

Pale 3 - 'In My Head'

    Poison - 'I Want Action'/'Talk Dirty To Me'/'Nothin But A Good Time'/'Fallen Angel'/'Livin For The Minute'/'Look What The Cat Dragged In'/'Want Some Need Some'/'Play Dirty'/'Good Love'/'Look But You Can't Touch'/'Bad To Be Good'

    Riot - 'Hard Lovin Man'

Robert Palmer - 'Addicted To Love'

Scorpions - <sexual innuendo in every song they ever wrote> :D

Years ago EMI brought out (another) compilation of Beatles songs called "The Beatles' Love Songs'

Someone wrote to the NME querying why they didn't include "Why don't we do it in the road" from the White album

push it, push it some more

when i finally copped onto the lyrics i was like jaysus!!

    Driving down those city streets
    Waiting to get down
Won't you take your big machine
    Somewhere in this town?

Now in the parking lot garage
    I found a proper place
Just follow all the written rules
    You'll fit into the space

Pull up to my bumper, baby
    In your long black limousine
Pull up to my bumper, baby
    And drive it in between

Pull up to it, don't drive through it
Back it up twice, now that fits nice

    Operate around the clock
Slow it if you come in?

I've got lots of space for everyone
    One for you my friend?

My lines are short, I'll fix you up
So won't you please come on
    Shiny sleek machine, you wheeled
I've got to blow your horn

Pull up to my bumper, baby
    In your long black limousine
Just pull up to my bumper, baby
    And drive it in between

Pull up to it and don't drive through it
Back it up twice, now that fits nice
Race it, straighten it, let me lubricate it

    Pull up to my bumper

    Grace Jones!! :)

I'm OUTRAGED that I might have to talk to my children and explain complex, real-world issues to them. As a parent, I think it should be illegal to expose children to the harsh realities of the world.

I won't turn on the news or tele around my children. I'm afraid to take them into Dublin anymore, our last trip to SuperMacs had us walking past some beggars/homeless people. Thankfully my kids didn't ask about them, but how am I supposed to explain social problems?

I sent my oldest child to school, but the other children weren't nearly so protected as mine. One kid *stole* a toy from another. My child asked me 'Why do people steal?!' That's not an easy question to answer! I sent my child to bed and withdrew her from school. Seriously though, how do you explain this stuff to children?!?

Even children's movies these days are including more and more 'adult' topics. Falling in love, marriage, jealousy, violence, greed....I used to read my daughter a 'Cinderella' book - until she started asking questions. 'Why are her step-sisters so mean?'

To be honest, even my own family makes it difficult. When we had our first son, my girls were curious about the whole 'penis' thing. I told them 'it is very dangerous and never touch it!' - but I think it just scared them. Plus, my Father smokes....and I told my kids never to do drugs....which was fine until they ASKED ME why 'Grandpa smokes'. How do I explain complex emotions like 'wanting to smoke' when it's obviously a drug addiction!?!

If I'd have known that my children would constantly come to me with questions about the less-than-perfect world we live in.....I would have used a condom!

// Yeah - joking aside, I'd explain it to my kids.
