Know a few who did - went to the yard selected their ones and that was it.

Relatively clean way of doing it.

Friesian bulls around that age are poor sellers at the moment. How much are they looking for them?

I know of two people that dealt with Wicklow. And both said he was sound.

rang him one time was looking at buying 12-15 simmental calfs to rear as cows .. asked him roughly what he was talking price wise and he would not tell me ...told me to come to yard , after explaining to him that i was serious and in mayo he still would not give me any price indication .
Now i wasnt looking for something for nothing i would have giving more than the going rate if they were what i wanted .needless to say i never went up .

Bought 21 of the german simmentals from them last year, rang a couple of days after when one of them was a bit sick and was quick to offer advice on how to treat the calf.... he made sure to ring back a few days later to make sure the calf was doing alright as well, not many sellers would do that. They won't give stock away but they won't waste your time either..

 even the worst of Irish dealers, only sell Irish calves

Bought a batch of friesian heifers from WWC. He's a straight talker and no crap and regularly calls in to see how the stock are getting on when in the area. Also has great advice on calf rearing

I wonder what we as farmers will be paying for these animals in the next 5 - 20 years.

Whatever he charges for stock won't be revealed on this thread but from what I can gather you will be paying over the odds.

    Have they got calves

I'm not to sure if they sell calves, but if you call them and have a chat they will tell you or advise you what you could do with your budget.

And the cost of Johnes, BVD are insignificant costs nowadays.

Im aware of the long term consequences of importing stock. We have had our fair share of losses and hardship through the years with BVD and the likes.

Just curious as to how these animals weigh up when compared to Irish bred beef females - just say the cost of getting them to mating, weight gain , fertility and milk. There would have to be a very substantial difference between the two before I would choose imported females over Irish bred

.....I then bought 35 weanlings of bealragh farm in Roscommon..... the lads at bealragh farms...... and i am going down to roscommon to buy 35 more this year from these lads in bealragh farms.....I would advise, these lads are providing high standards of weanlings at good price.

:D Sorry but it's farmers you are dealing with here. We're trained from an early age how to spot a chancer.

Did you keep them for breeding or selling on ? Are they milking the simmental back there or why are they selling the calves so young

I think the FIL got a batch of about 60 then and currently 30 are in calf to a lim bull and the rest are for fattening with 10 to go shortly. Don't know much about them as had nothing to do with the deal was just told one night to call down to the yard at 11pm and here was a truck ready to be unloaded

Does anyone feel weanlings or calves are scarce to buy at the moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭charityboy

Don't know about weanlings but if you think calves are scarce you are looking in the wrong places , the marts are flooded with them
