    Hi there
I've recently joined a gym and would like to sign up for a PT with them. however, the trainer in question has suggested a 6 week ban of all carbs and alcohol and i am concerned that this will be unsustainable in the longterm and I will just go back to square one after 6 weeks. Its not sustainable giving up carbs or indeed alcohol entirely?

any advice would be much appreciated

6 week ban of all carbs? Ridiculous.

6 weeks without beer should not be a big issue.

No to be honest I wouldn't mind the no alcohol. But I think the no carbs is a bit silly and I think its unsustainable, yes, cut down etc but every stable meal with lack of either pasta, rice or spuds to me is ridiculous!

Hmmmm cutting out pasta, rice and potatoes isn't a bad move IMO

Did he say if you were allowed eat veg? Or is a complete ban?

No veg and "good" carbs are allowed eg spinach.

I totally woudl agree with cutting way down on "bad" carbs, but cutting them out completely??

I don't eat pasta, bread, rice or potatoes (except the odd sweet potato) so I'm with your trainer on this one.

It's called a ketogenic diet, and even though it isn't for a lot of people, it's pretty much the fastest way to lose fat while retaining muscle while not feeling hungry.

You can go back to the PT and just say no you'd prefer to do just cut down/do something else, he/she is probably just looking to give you the biggest bang for your buck and that's what a keto diet does.

El_Dangeroso I don't think he's asking him to go full blown keto.

There's very little veg on keto and he's said he's allowed have veg just no 'bad' carbs.

my advice would be describe EXACTLY what he or she said, lay out your current diet (typical day or two), your weight and height and current level of activity.

Its all guess work otherwise if you want proper advice

Spinach and other veg are allowed on keto, you get 30g carb allowance, that's a lot of non-starchy veg.

Some people can go as high as 80g and still be in ketosis.
