There's an rte1 hd now? I've still been putting up with the SD version

The new RTE1 is on ch. 44 from Cairn Hill. It isn't on ch. 53 anywhere.

If you're picking up anything on ch. 53 in Cairn Hill service area, it will be the original version on mux. 1 from Truskmore.

Recieving RTE1 in glorious HD on channel 58 after rescan. (Swords Co. Dublin)

After a rescan, my TV still has RTE One listed on the EPG as Rescan Required on channel 800 but has added the RTE One HD on channel 819. When will the original one be removed ?

Seems to be quite good HD quality pictures on some of the programming on Rte One over the last couple of days. Take Firefighters this evening which was shot in HD. This came out with good clarity or is it all up scaled?

    Whenever you press 'delete'?

Ok if your STB can reorder channels but some like the Technika box don't have this function. So to get the proper RTE 1 HD with full programme listings you have to go much further down the channels which is a bit of a pain.

My TV said that all previous channels would be removed :(

    I'll try again so

All channels that are telling you to rescan will be switched off in 3 weeks, to give us time to tune them in .

    Delete every terrestrial Saorview channel.

Manually scan your 2 local mux frequencies. Delete the no name channels and the ones that have rescan in the event data (epg data).

Turn off the notification for new channels in the pani menu.

WHen will RTE1 HD actually be putting programs on in 720p/1080i?

It is promised for early in the New Year. But I hope they have launched in time for Christmas. Hopefully the next season of The Voice of Ireland will be broadcast in HD when it starts in early January.

What about Fair City and the Late Late? :P : haha

For me, I think the upgrade we just got from 544x576 SD to upscaled HD is a bigger leap in quality than what we'll get next year going from upscaled HD to proper 1080i HD produced stuff.

Yes it'll be nice to get that content next year, but the step up now is very impressive, especially notice it on the news/weather with on screen graphics.

Many people (me included) have a tough time telling the difference on RTE TWO HD between upscaled SD stuff and actual HD stuff, but there's no doubting the difference between the old 544x576 RTE ONE SD and the new upscaled HD version.

(I might have that SD resolution wrong, I just remember thinking the RTE ONE SD is something lower than normal 704x576 SD)

At least now we won't have the farcical situation of the two Eurovision semi-finals being in HD on RTE2 yet the final on RTE1 only available in SD :P

I always thought it was a little odd that the RTÉ1 and TG4 pictures transmitted in NI (on the MiniMux) were better resolution than the ones transmitted in ROI.

That was always going to be a temporary situation (HD coming), but what we now need is the channels on the NIMM to be in HD! (Yes, I know it's not "planned" but things change :))

You won't get HD on the NImux, without compromising reception in all but the best signal areas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,395 ✭✭✭danjo-xx

Does this really matter much, I've a load of duplicate sat channels in 'all channels' but I just use the channels in 'my favourites'

Are they using up hard drive space or what.

Is RTE 1 HD being broadcast from three rock as I'm not getting it after a rescan?

You could probably get away with one HD channel on the current multiplex configuration, but you would then quite likely have to reduce the other two SD services down to Saorview-SD levels by sacrificing some picture sharpness.

The current NIMM configuration (DVB-T2, PP7, 8MHz, 32k-ext COFDM, QPSK, G/I 1/128, FEC 2/3) yields a net bit-rate of just over 10 Mbps. Raising the FEC to 3/4 would require an approx 1db increase in the SNR required at the receiver, giving an additional 1.2 Mbps, which in theory could allow one HD channel while allowing the other two remain at full SD resoultion. Shouldn't be a problem for those receiving the NIMM and the other Freeview multiplexes available from Brougher Mountain or Carnmoney Hill where the NIMM is within the aerial group, but slightly more trickier with it from Black Mountain - how many people it would affect I don't know.

It would be pretty rubbish HD and SD. Basically if an NI viewer can't get Saorview and is serious about Tg4 and RTE then Saorsat is a better idea.

Saorsat will eventually have TG4, RTE1 & RTE2 all HD and might even get TV3 and 3e someday, the NI Minimux will never have more channels or HD.

It seems that RTE is testing out it's HD play out system for RTE One these days. This afternoons showing of nationwide went out with stunning picture quality. The film last night What Richard Did and last Sunday's Love/Hate seem to went out in HD quality. Most of the promos and a good deal of other programming looks sd up scaled. It looks like they will be ready to launch RTE One HD in a few weeks time.

On Panasonic G10B "RTE1 HD" appears at "828" after the scan in amongst the UK channels. (Clermont Carn)

Is the Panasonic seeing the Saorview channels, I have a Panasonic which is not even connected to Saorview currently but the last time it was it would only tune in the radio channels. I did a hack hex edit trick on in for it to see the channels.

Does it appear as "RTE One HD" after the rescan? I've rescanned but "RTE One" is still listing, not much difference in quality either!

it still says rte one just like rte two. Nothing is in hd yet just unscaled but i think its a good improvement over the blurry definition were getting before

Did my rescan, RTE1 looking great, can anyone tell me what will be on channels 12 and 14 as they seem to be 2 HD test transmission, wonder if its TV3 HD and TG4 HD? I hope it is.

No one here knows. LCN 14 did carry TG4 teletext and subtitles with the testcard for a little while a few weeks ago which might be an indication of what's to come in future. Don't hold your breath for TV3 HD though.

One of these channels may become RTE One +1 HD. That would put TV3 HD out the window.

When is RTE going to broadcast HD?

Would have thought the toy show would have been a great opportunity but alas they didn't.

Has anything been shown in HD yet?

This is on a slow burn, what does one expect from paddyland! Looked @ RTE1 last night on my new 42" Sony LED HD TV & felt that the resolution wasn't great. Went over to BBC1 HD, & ah bliss real HD! There was no doubt that it was 'real HD':P RTE are only paddying about - whats new :P

RTE1 HD may appear to look like transmitting in upscaled HD for the moment due to it's testing phase.

Maybe we will just need to keep an eye on the announcements over the next few weeks or months to see what will officially happen from 2RN.

My guess would be that we should hopefully see some Proper HD movies over the Christmas holidays.

I must stress that much of the broadcasting including the ever popular Late Late Toy Show went out in up scaled sd. But I did get stunned on some of the output looking HD like some news video clips, some editions of Nationwide. Even some of the advertising looks HD while the others ads look obviously SD.

Same as with RTE2, everything shot in an RTE studio is upscaled (except for outside broadcast live sport stuff). RTE's new HD studio isn't ready until 2015 I think?

    LOL

We have TV3 with state on the art HD studios but no HD channels and then we have RTE with two HD channels but no Studios!

    Ireland at its best!

RTE 1 was all HD last night. In Fair City I could see the spots on Rachel's face! Only problem now is that HD recordings are taking up more space on my Saorview recorders USB fob :D

No I think the improvment was due to "upscaling " . Put simply becasue of the extra capacity of the HD channel even SD programs benefit . There picture appears cleaner and hence you can see extra detail because the "picture noise" spots are smaller . It's not true HD however .

The upscaled SD will still use as much space on your USB fob .

    But still more than SD?

Yes because it's an sd source being transmitted in an hd bandwidth filesize OBVIOUSLY.

I'd be amazed if RTE even makes Fair city with hd cameras.
The Beeb only converted the Eastenders set recently. They had to put in all new fixtures and fittings etc.

Ah well in that case Fair City's in the upstart version of SD! It'll certainly be a while be we see proper HD on Fair City so ...

I find that Fair City did look HD to me. Not like the Late Late Toy Show last Friday which was definatly not HD.
