Well every other forum seems to have one now and then but i dont remember seeing one in its rightful home.

I propose somewhere in dublin in november?

If someone could organise something extra than just meeting for a drink that would be great.

Good idea - somewhere like WJK, LMG, one of the Galway Bay pubs or else Seaneh won't come (:P) - B&C can be fairly busy and uncomfortable for large-ish groups I find.

    I'm in anyway.

Would have thought the B&C is better for large groups tbh.

Them and Sweetmans will do free platters of finger food anyway. You might be able to get a free pitcher out of Sweetmans as well (definitely if it's on a Thursday).

I know you worked there, so may not have encountered this.

I always found that unless you were there with your group at the start of the night, then once the beer hall started getting busy with other groups and/or just other customers then it was going to be an uncomfortable night of standing or squeezing into tight corners. Any latecomers would find it hard to interact properly with the group.

Look, I LOVE the B&C, both upstairs and downstairs parts, and I always recommend the place to people, but I've always found that for medium-large groups (say 6-8 or more) then it wasn't really suitable.

a more "traditional" set-up like the pubs I mentioned might be better.

Another possible venue, albeit a slimmer one, is the former Headline Bar. It's reopening as a craft bar in the coming days, boasting no less than 57 beers. (If it hasn't yet, that is). I only suggest it as it is a new venture for drinkers to support but I'd merrily go to B+C, JWS, ATG or wherever.

Regardless of where it is, I am sure any of the craft beer houses would be ever willing to entertain a party of discerning quaffers.

Wouldnt mind an excuse to head over to WJK, Ive never been because its over in the heart of darkness (northside)

Mm, fair enough though it's not normally too bad midweek. Booking a few tables might help in that case as well.

Should be open this week afaik.

I'd suggest WJK, as, in my experience, there tends to be lots of room, with moveable seating, and an excellent range of beers, including on cask.

yes, the cask range in WJK could be a swinger, and I'm sure Declan would make sure there was something nice in if he knew there was a group coming in.

    Midweek? Why not weekend?

Across from Leonards Corner. The new proprietor has some connection to the Bull & Castle I think.

bit far out of town for me tbh, would prefer somewhere more central (or Northside :))

Beoir's monthly meetup is on Wednesday at 7 in the Bull and Castle. This is where some of us who brew at home will bring beer along to taste and have some great Irish beer at the same time. It will be a quiet one by the looks of it. If anyone wants to come along just show up and say hello.

There are €4 pints of some Irish micros in B&C on Wednesday's as well as some homebrew to try.

The 9, 16 and 122 cross town frequently and pass by it's door. The 49, 54A and 68/A also pass by on a less regular service. There are heaps of buses and indeed the Luas within 10 minutes walk so it's easily reached but yes, I take your point :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,705 ✭✭✭ciaran76

City center would be nice with just 1 bus or train/Luas for most people.

Upstairs in Brew Dock is spacious enough, as is upstairs in ATG - but neither has a bar. Which is unfortunate.

Black Sheep is ok, but not sure if the layout is condusive to a meet-up of strangers.

Those places are cool though, they have things like Jenga to break the ice.

Sweetman's is ok, but I, and I'd say most people, would prefer a wider range of draught.

    Cassidy's has too many hipsters.

Farrington's has an awesome selection, sound bar staff, but too many staghens.

B&C I wouldn't rule out, but have reservations.

WJK and LMG are probably a bit too out of the way for the poshos though.

Farrington's has the upstairs bar that is often empty, even when downstairs is packed.
Black sheep has the downstairs too, like the others in the chain, no bar but it's not much of an issue to walk upstairs and get beer. Actually, ATG might now have an upstairs bar. I vaguely recall the manager telling me when I was in Brewdock last.

Farrington's is my favourite bar in Dublin, so I'm biased to that one tbh.

Porterhouse Temple Bar has decent space upstairs as well too.

If you read the Charter you'll see that we are allowed to talk about beer but not actually allowed to drink any! So I don't wanna risk a ban so I'm out!

10 Porterhouse beers and they normally have Metalman, Galway Hooker and one other on as well. That's not too bad.

Farringtons would have a great range of beers to the Porterhouse as in Irish beers wouldnt it?

No it doesn't, not even close. It does not allow for talk about binge drinking, under-age drinking or the like. This is a social gathering that some people want to arrange.

Won't know until a date is set if I can go but the obvious choice in my mind would be the Headline.

Why is an out of town pub the "obvious choice"

Probably because it's new, it will be quiet and the group would provide some business.
Either that or he lives near it.

Yeah, feck travelling from Artane all that way.

There are umpteen pubs in the city centre which are just as "obvious".

I'm not being funny here, but for what would be "first" meet-up for this forum, I think we'd be better off going for something more accessible.

JWS, B&C, any of the Galway Bays, Farrington's are all perfectly good venues, with excellent beer choices and all accessible on one trip on Public Transport for most people who live in Dublin.

I'd love for this to go ahead, and would love to attend, but anything that's going to put me way out of my way isn't going to interest me.

Also, I'm sure this new pub will have enough business in it's opening few weeks that he may well appreciate a group meet-up at a later date, when the initial "oooh shiney" custom wears out a bit.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

The "easiest" pub is probably Brewdock as it's right beside the train station and 5 minutes walk from just about every major bus route in the city. But I don't think it's the best venue, layout wise (unless we did upstairs, the bar isn't that far away really), I reckon B&C is a good bet if we can either reserve a table or get there early, their long tables are perfect for this sort of situation. If it was wednesday we also get the benefit of €4 on certain beers, which is always nice and they always have something interesting on cask.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭adamski8

Seems like b&c brewdock and farringtons are the best choices regarding getting the most people to a convinent place. Easy to reserve a place in any of them. Should we do a poll?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,547 Mod ✭✭✭✭Amirani

Brewdock is good but it'd probably have to be midweek to be guaranteed space.

Brewdock is on the Luas, beside the train, near busses (Dublin and outside Dublin busses). It has good beer, decent food and the upstairs part would be pretty near perfect for this kind of situation.

    +1 Brewdock

Second choice Farringtons's, third B&C, - with the other Galway Bay pubs also there, Porterhouses and JWS.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

I'll vote brewdock too but only because im lazy and the 14 and 27b stop right beside it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,748 ✭✭✭✭Lovely Bloke

Brewdock is good but it'd probably have to be midweek to be guaranteed space.

If we got in touch with them they'd probably reserve us a spot for 12-15 people.

Farrington's would DEFINITELY do that in their upstairs part - even at the weekend I'd say, I'm on friendly terms with one or two of the barmen in there, and wouldn't mind asking them.

I've a good bit of experience with organising online meet-up, here on Boards, and can tell from experience that about 50% of the people who say they'll be there will actually turn up, especially to the first one.

So we need 2 polls, one for the venue, although experience also tells me that once it's central enough that's when you get most attendance, another poll to gauge numbers - 3 options, yes, maybe and no.

    50% of the Yes go
    10% of the Maybe go
and one fool always clicks no, but then goes anyway :D

It's hardly in the shticks either as some are trying to make out.

Ah heyor, no-one is saying that. It IS out of the way for Northsiders though, just as WJK would be out of the way for Southsiders.

Somewhere in town would be best for this one.

Fair enough, but it still is 'in town' IMO. It's what, 15 mins walk from the B&C and on many major bus routes. ;)

Since WJK seems to be out, which is fair enough for Southsiders - I've just made the switch to the Northside myself though! - I'd be behind any of the Galway Bay pubs.

I like Sweetman's but I think the range isn't necessarily extensive enough for an occasion of this nature. Good beers for sure but they usually just have three on draught at any time from my experience.

I'd happily settle for B&C too though.

I'd probably be up for this depending on the date. Any of the city center pubs would suit me fine.

Very true, it's still what I consider to be the city centre. Most people consider anything within the canals to be be city centre. It's out of the way for me, I live in Blanchardstown but I would be up for an excuse to pop in to Geoff's new place. That said, I reckon we will be having a Beoir night out there anyway. It's about as out of the way for me as against the grain, perhaps a little more so.

what about the pav? can't get any more city centre than that :pac:
