    Whats the score?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭ScissorPaperRock

    Ulster 7 - 3 Montpellier

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭ScissorPaperRock

Kicking from tee not going too well - PJ has missed one, and RP has missed two. They should be much further ahead.

Paddy's kicking from hand has been good though.

Some classy running on the counterattack from Payne. Can not wait to see him in an Ireland shirt.

Ulster will regret not extending their advantage in the first half. They have played well but have scant reward on the scoreboard.

Ref has been kind to us, good first half from ulster but need to stop missing kicks

Lovely try and Ulster playing well but ahould be further ahead. Three missed penalties (albeit two were shot to nothings by Pienaar).

7-3 up and halftime with Afoa, Henderson and Olding waiting to come on, plus I THINK we have the wind behind us in the second half. Hopefully we keep it up in the second half.

RP penalty from beyond the halfway line, 10-3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭ScissorPaperRock

Montpellier try off the scrum, after Afoa came on. Ulster had been dominant in the scrum up until then.

    10-8

    Olding on for Marshall

    I don't understand a lot of decisions ...

Should have had another try for sure

    RP penalty - 16-8

Looking good for Ulster, massive moment to keep them out at 16-8. Looking relatively comfortable. Have the experience to wind this down and get a crucial victory.

    come on ref ....

Whats the score now? Are Ulster home and dry yet?

    This is becoming a farce.

    Another Ulster penalty

    19-8

Hard to see past an Ulster win at this stage. Very good going.

    What defence! What a tackle!

Paddy Jackson take a bow, that's an unreal try saving tackle.

Fantastic try saving tackle by Paddy there. Henderson has been class since coming on too.

    Another RP penalty 22-8

When you see something like that try being blown by Montpellier you know its your day. 22-8 and Ulster are full value for it. Hopefully see it out now and deny Montpellier a bonus point. They can have qualification wrapped up before they go to Welford Road if they perform to potential.

    Couple of lineout malfunctions though

Indeed. But the ref had too much an impact on the game. If you add to that our lack of inspiration and luck, it is a very sad day for Montpellier. Goodbye the H Cup. See you next year... or not.

    8-25 FT

    fantastic result

That try saving tackle by Jackson was just incredible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭ScissorPaperRock

The ref did have a big impact on the game, and it did seem to go Ulster's way. But Ulster were definitely the better team.

Well done Ulster. They are in a great position now to push for the quarter finals and hopefully a home quarter this year. Another win in France is another psychological boost also.

Beating the leaders of the Top 14 at their fortress AND denying them the losing BP. Really good win!

Wow, I didn't give Ulster a prayer before this one, must rank as one of their just impressive HEC results, haven't seem the game but Jackson surely streaking away from his rivals as backup Ireland 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,768 ✭✭✭eyeball kid

Great result for Ulster, I'd imagine they will be targeting 9 point from the Treviso back to backs. Should put them firmly in control of that group.

Hmm how has Sexton been for Racing? Jackson is finally coming into some form.

Jeez, I don't think Leinster would be able to go to Montpellier and get a score like that. Big step forward for Ulster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

At Thomond so didn't see this but that is a serious statement by Ulster.

So long as Montpellier beat Leicester in France and draw with them in Welford...

C'mon Munster. Make it an Irish full house.

True Ulster did extremelly well what they did. But he had several controversial actually not controversial, I'd just say strange and sometimes incomprehensible decisions that could have changed the game completely.

Unless you over-exaggerate the reality or just follow a certain press, I don't know where you get these figures from. What is Montpellier in the world of rugby compared to Ulster ? Just have a look at the comparative H Cup histories of both club. In fairness even at your national championship level you are miles ahead of us. Montpellier is growing and managed to establish itself within the "elite" of French rugby clubs for 3 years now. 3 years ! That's all. And despite our rich president we're no Toulon ! Galthié brought us there. We were fighting the relegation battle before. Ulster is a much much bigger team than Montpellier.

it reminds me 2 years ago when I was worried before our first ever H Cup game (home to Leinster) and was "accused" (:p) of cute-hoorism for that. Jaysus guys, start to realise how big Irish provincial rugby has become ! You're no longer the small clubs !

I think you're underestimating how hard it is to go to Montpellier and win. Ulster also don't have a good record of winning in France.

Ay? Ulster have only had a resurgence back to the elite in the last 3 years as well since the resignation of Matt Williams.

It was a very good win for Ulster. Sorry.

Sorry you did not get my point. I am not saying Montpellier is a little David facing a Goliath Ulster. I'm saying that considering our ground a fortress and praying for Ulster to get something is a loooooot over the top. That's all.

And I'd love to know where this hype around Montpellier comes from? We have a decent team that can turn very good at times. But recent history showed how inexperienced we can be at other times. This afternoon was an example, we could not cope with the ref (different interpretation - strange ones too -, especially for the scrum, than what we're used in top 14) and could not get a grip on the game while Ulster adapted to all these conditions perfectly. And this is no surprise to me. You actually said it yourself without realising it. Ulster resurfaced in the elite 3 years ago while Montpellier just got born in the elite 3 years ago. You played the H Cup final while we played the Top 14 final. That sums the (big) gap between the 2 teams.

Maybe. Maybe not. I don't know. Before the game, contrary to the comments I referred to in my previous post, it was 55-45 (60-40 maximum) for Montpellier, our main advantage being playing at home. In Ravenhill it'll be minimum 70-30 for Ulster. This is how I see the difference.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭shuffol

That was a serious side Montpellier had out and they are generally fairly formidable at home, Leinster in their HEC winning season went there and scraped a draw, for an Ulster side shorn of a top class international forward bar Best(and even many would debate that) to go there and win 25-8 is some achievment. I cant think of many better Ulster wins on the road than that.

  • One of the best Irish wins on the road in the last 3 seasons?

Certainly up there I'd have to say, realistically Ulster have a very solid chance of a home QF now assuming they get two wins against Treviso and beat Monty in Ravenhill. Only major concern is Leicester doing the double over Monty though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

Given that Montpellier didn't get the bonus at Treviso and got nothing today, they are probably out. I wouldn't back them at Ravenhill or Welford Road. If Ulster can be on 17/18 points following the December double header against Treviso then they should qualify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

That's a super super result. Montpellier are a very formidable opponent, to beat them, and by that margin, in France is incredible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,967 ✭✭✭✭phog

I didn't see any of the game but that's a great result for Ulster, probably the best of the 4 provinces today.

    Well done.
