    Manchester United team news:

Manchester United manager David Moyes will assess the fitness of his international stars before settling on his line-up for Saturday's Old Trafford encounter with Southampton.

Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney look certain to start in attack after both scored during the international break but Tom Cleverley is likely to miss out after picking up a calf injury prior to England's victory over Montenegro.

Moyes' major decision appears to revolve around 18-year-old Adnan Januzaj, who netted a match-winning brace on his full Premier League debut at Sunderland a fortnight ago.

Provisional squad: De Gea, Lindegaard, Amos, Rafael, Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Fabio, Valencia, Nani, Fellaini, Carrick, Giggs, Anderson, Young, Zaha, Januzaj, Kagawa, Rooney, Van Persie, Welbeck, Hernandez.

    Southampton team news:

Artur Boruc and Luke Shaw are both in contention for Southampton's trip to Manchester United on Saturday.

Shaw was unable to link up with the England Under 21s due to illness but is also in contention, while Gaston Ramirez will be assessed after arriving back from international duty with Uruguay late on Thursday.

Provisional squad: Boruc, K Davis, Gazzaniga, Clyne, Chambers, Shaw, Fox, Lovren, Hooiveld, Yoshida, Fonte, Schneiderlin, Cork, S Davis, Ward-Prowse, Wanyama, Lallana, Rodriguez, Ramirez, Do Prado, Osvaldo, Lambert, Lee.
Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino expects Boruc to start again in goal, despite the Poland team physio claiming he suffered a hamstring injury during the international break.

The stage is set for Wanyama to upstage Fellaini isn't it...

Hopefully the break has let United get their act together. Southampton have looked really good this season, especially in midfield so Carrick and Fellaini need to have a big game.

    2-1 United, I hope.

RVP a doubt according to Moyes

"We have a few with knocks," Moyes told MUTV. "The one we are more worried about is Robin van Persie.

"He got a kick on the calf and he came off in the second game (against Turkey). He has had problems with his toes as well."

Rumours that Carrick is injured,if so time for Fellaini to man up & show us what he can do.

Would like to see Hernandez start if RVP is injured :)

Think Moyes has picked the CB's with Europe in mind in the week. Other than that its a very exciting team

De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Evans, Evra, Carrick, Fellaini, Rooney, Nani, Januzaj, RVP Starting line up

Happy with that line up. Now, lets wait for us to concede first and have to fight back for a scrappy 1-1 or hopefully 2-1.

I don't know about that CB pairing

Otherwise it's probably our best lineup we have (minus Kag), no excuses today.

I hope Fellaini and Carrick sit deep and soak up the pressure and let the forwards worry about scoring.

Lambert on the bench for Saints

Boruc, Clyne, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Wanyama, Schneiderlin, S. Davis, Lallana, Rodriguez, Osvaldo

subs: K. Davis, Lambert, Ward-Prowse, Cork, Guly, Chambers, Hooiveld.

That's a great line-up. Almost exactly what everyone has been looking for all season. I think Januzaj was always going to be starting after the contract renewal.

Will be interesting to see how the Nani-Shaw battle goes on. Shaw has such promise and I'd like to think we are interested in signing him but I'd love to see Nani back on form and tear him a new one.

    C'mon United

Southampton play nice football, this should be a good game, hopefully everyone's on form now for Utd after the international break.

We need to start playing Jones at CB anyway. No point leaving him out on the right anymore. Maybe would be better with Vida but Evans has been excellent the last couple of years.

Need a goal to knock Southampton's confidence a bit

Passing the ball around like there the home team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭Crimson King

So far open enough game. Have a feeling V Persie is going to get one today as he seems to be in the right place all the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭Nolars

bloody long balls, Southampton playing as the home team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,136 ✭✭✭✭Rayne Wooney

Hoofing it just shouldn't be an option at United, shocking the way Southampton are in control

It all stems from teams playing 3 in the centre. We simply must adapt to this

It all stems from teams playing 3 in the centre. We simply must adapt to this

You can counter a 3 man midfield when you play with 2, by playing quick, direct balls down the flank to get them running back towards their own goal. But hoofing it doesn't work, it has to be on the deck.

The problem we are always going to have against any half decent team is their 3 vs our 2 means they can press out CM's everytime they have the ball. Even if we take one of their CM's out of the game the spare one can then apply the next wave of pressing. It leads to hurried passing and makes it really difficult to implement what you are suggestng.
