The convicted drug dealer John Gilligan has been released from prison this morning having spent almost 17 years in jail, most of it serving a 20-year term for drugs.
The 61-year-old originally from Ballyfermot, Dublin, left maximum security Portlaoise Prison at 9.35am.
He walked through large wooden doors at the jail to a waiting silver Ford Mondeo parked just yards away driven by two associates.
The vehicle had been permitted by the prison authorities to drive onto the prison campus through the main vehicle entrance for the purposes of parking right beside the wooden door where Gilligan walked out.
It meant Gilligan could get into the car while still on the prison campus and did not need to walk past the media waiting outside the main gates onto the public road.

He says he had nothing to do with the Veronica Guerin murder. Vincent Browne last night on tv3 said he had an idea of what criminal was actually responsible for it and that it probably wasn't Gilligan but he wouldn't go on to name anyone about it.

    Thoughts?

There's enough of them out there keeping themselves busy shooting other scumbags, leave them off I say, as long as they keep shooting each other and not anyone decent, they're doing their bit for the community. Think the likes of Gilligan is well and truely finished, he's a scumbag not a national hero, people are only glorifying him standing outside the prison waiting for him to be released

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was Shane Geoghegan not killed by a gang member, albeit by mistake? It's hardly ideal to just 'leave them off'...

He reminds me of Bertie Ahern.

Who's going to believe a word that comes out of his mouth. What really is the point in asking him questions like this?

He's going to be watched by the media for quite a while, which I reckon it'll make it somewhat difficult for him to do much of anything.

Has he been totally stripped of his ill gotten assets? I know they took Jessbrook, but did they loot his accounts too?

because there's been such a paucity of gangland murders with gilligan banged up?

17 years is a long stretch, can't really complain about him being released regardless of his behaviour

You, obviously, seeing as you took the time to post.

He'll be like Paddy Bishop on Fair City now....out of the game! No criminal gangs will give a **** about him and wouldn't want to be associated with him anyway with the eyeballing he's likely to be getting. He's old news. Balance of power has moved on.

So do you go through all the threads on the site that you don't care about and let them know or is it just this one you really really don't care about?

Don't bother answering, that was a rhetorical question.

The state can sell off Jessbrook but if he wins the latest case he's lodged with the High Court, he can get it back even if the state does manage to sell it.

No he didn't, he merely obtained certification that he is still challenging the state, nothing else.
Once there is a full court hearing he will lose that certification again.

Oh the irony of it

The State took (allegedly, I don't believe it for a minute) all his assets, so he gets to tie the self-same State up in knots for ever more with mostly spurious legal challenges, courtesy of the legal aid scheme, at the State's expense.

(Mind you, I heard someone the other day speculating that even if he did have gazillions of spondulicks down the back of the couch / in the toilet cistern / buried in the Dublin mountains - it'll all be in Punts, and ony the Central Bank will change them any more :D)

It would be easy to change 1 punt to 1 euro

I'd buy 5000 punt off him for 5000 euro
