Damaged hard drive? Sounds like it requires cleanroom recovery work. It can be done, but you do realise it could cost a few grand, right?

did you TRY opening the case, put the harddrive into a sata or ide enclosure.
IF its 3.5inch ,it,ll need a caddy with a power supply.
Does the drive show up in my computer ,is it detected by the pc.?
I think the gardai probably just send it to a specialist data recovery company,
they can afford to spend 1000,s on 1 drive .
if the pcb is damaged its possible to put in another identical pcb.
INSIDE an external drive theres 1 pcb, with a usb connector,
    that may be damaged,
    the drive may be fine.

    HOW is it damaged exactly?
is the pcb damaged, a circuit broken,?
or is it its not detected by a pc ?
could you install it inside a pc, just the hard disk,
use the power ,data cables from the dvdrom drive.
PLUG out power cable from pc before you do this.

    see this thread

back to square one , what are the symptoms ?

Is it making clinking or clunking sounds ?

did the drive drop while powered up ?

was it a brick or could it fit in a pocket ?

you see some people who "know about computers" don't know about computers

Sorry for the late reply, it was damaged due to a fall, i have had a number off people and companies look at it and forensic recovery is the only option.

I got quoted 700euro by a data recovery company (not for forensic recovery) but they could not guarantee that all the data could be recovered.

I am aware that costs could be high but i have over 10 years of family photos and videos on it and simply cant just forget about it.

I've used critical data for a client of mine, suggested in Capt'n Midnights link. They were expensive, but managed to get all the data back. Their setup is very professional, clean room etc.I have no connection with them.

they,ll HAVE to fix the drive and scan the drive before they,ll know how much data they can recover.
if the drive pcb ,is damaged its possible to replace it with another identical pcb.
when you say forensic recovery ,do you mean using a clean room.?

Was just told that the only way to get the data off it is the same way the garda get data from damaged hard drives. The chap told me it's called forensic recovery. That's all I know about it
