Proper facilities, forensic hard- and software and staff training does not come cheap.

It really depends on the severity if the damage. I'd be careful with fixed rates in this trade, these guys really don't do much more than any IT engineer worth their salt could do. More serious companies may give you an estimate for different scenarious over the phone (which you can compare) but without evaluation you won't get a final quote.

what exactly happened to the drive there may be other ways to fix it i have replaced the controller board and accessed the data without issue . a lot of the time it just the file format type thats crupt and if you use Gparted you can get in and copy your data off but you might have to manually mount the partitions on the disk. i used this method 2 weeks ago on a laptop drive

It took a fall while powered on , the Head got damaged , needs to be recovered and the data transferred to another drive . It turns on but thats it , beeps. doesn't show in windows . Took it to a Pc clinic and he said that it would have to be sent off for recovery

  • Registered Users Posts: 277 ✭✭invaderzimirl

well if the heads are gone you need clean room work done on it. and very expensive, don't think there is any other option but to pay the CRAZY money if you need the data.

And, you never backed it up.

I havent dealt with HDD recovery in while but this isn't going to be cheap and unless the data is of extreme importance possibly not economically sensible. Chances are both the heads and platters are damaged, which means some of the data may not be recoverable.

Either way Gparted wont help here

Ever thought of offering this talent of yours to a psychic hotline! ;)

if you need it recovered then http://www.criticaldata.ie/ are the only real specialists that i have used and are extremely good. They will price it for you before you commit and tell you if it is possible before you pay a penny.
I have used a few times and can highly recommend Ciaran and the guys there.

ok what happened to your main drive maybe that will be an easier drive to recover

I've gone through the professional data recovery process once. It was a place in Phibsboro, beside the off licence on the corner of the shopping center. Forget the name. Before they charged us, they gave a full directory listing of potential files that could be recovered. They did a great job. It was a clean room exercise, though. It cost about €500 to €600 ex VAT.

Well i sent off my hard drive to Kroll Ontrack | The Pavilions, 1 Weston Road, Kiln Lane, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 1JG, UK
    +44 (0) 1372 736 627 | Fax +44 (0) 1372 847 992
    lross@krollontrack.com
    www.krollontrack.co.uk | blog.ontrackdatarecovery.co.uk

They are going to do a free evaluation and i am under no obligation to Pay unless i give the go ahead , if i think its to expensive , then i can pay €15 and they will send it back

The first phase costs €400 , but that is only if they can recover the data .
If they have to go more indept then thats where the €€€€ come into play . i am hoping its first phase , if not then ill be leaving it off

You could try this guy. http://www.itservices.ie/ based in Waterford. I know someone who had hard drive failure (Think the heads were not turning, HD damaged, it got a knock / fall), and got him to retrieve the information. Think he uses a system of varying the voltages to the hard drive to try get access and uses software to then grab the idata. Might be worth giving him a call, I think he is even a member of boards but don't know his user name.

Thanks , i might be able to give him the orginal drive and see what he can do with it , it got a CRC error on it .

    Thanks for the info

Just wondering how you got in with this ? Same situation myself, drive is unreadable in the main and number of bad sectors is growing. It didn't get any knock, just turned it on and would not boot, would not recognise file system etc.

    Too late :(

Drives have spare sectors that aren't user accessible. The drive remaps them on the fly when a bad sector is found. Unless your OS is flaky you'll only see bad sectors after the spares are used up.

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/partedmagic/
use it to see SMART info on the drive
it can also copy files from the file system to an external drive

more advanced utils include ddrescue (always use a logfile) and photo rec to recover files while it still spins up

Try the hard drive freeze trick,
    google it,
free s up heads that are stuck
put hd in a ziplock bag ,in freezer ,for 2 hours.

HAVE external drive ready to copy drive over .
    sometimes it works ,
no harm in trying it .
BE areful when handling the drive, be gentle, do not touch the pcb underneath.

    http://lifehacker.com/5515337/save-a-failed-hard-drive-in-your-freezer-redux
eg sometimes the drive heads get stuck in place.

Agreed, in the crowd I work for some high up managers have dropped laptops or had their desktop HDDs fail and have been sent off to clean room scenarios.

From what I've heard, each one of these cost about 5 grand!!!

On a business level I don't see how anybody in Ireland could have a clean room and the spindle tools needed for data recovery.

I'm pretty sure that their are only two or three locations in the UK and a couple in the states who have the rooms and equipment. You need the highest grade of clean room and some serious tools for platter recovery. Most other places really just resell ontracks services. Who I used before with a seriously damaged encrypted hard drive and got 90% of it back.
