When someone mentioned Maastricht recently I mentioned the most measly breakfast that I ever had and it was in a guesthouse ran by some sweet old lady that didn't speak English. I was quite taken aback but I hadn't given much thought to what it would consist of. It was just like the photo with a slice of ham, a slice of cheese and a small bread roll. We had a long drive planned into Belgium and Germany and this wasn't what I had in mind to keep me fuelled till dinner.

Having lived in Thailand for about 9 months at that time I didn't see much "western" food but when I ended up in one of the tourist areas I stumbled across a cafe run by an English guy and oh boy was this full English a welcome break. Don't get me wrong, I love Thai food but back then I was still trying to get used to the place and this brekky was superb and only a couple of Euro. Haven't had many since as got used to Thai food after I met the little woman. :D

I was in Lyon recently and they don't appear to do breakfast anywhere. At all.

They did it in the hotel but I'll be damned if I'll pay 19 euro for some terrible eggs and ham.

I asked a local and they said breakfast is usually a coffee and a cigarette and if feeling especially famished a croissant.

Japan breakfast.... bowl of steamed rice + raw egg that you are meant to crack into the rice and mix. Miso soup and maybe some salted / steamed fish.
Pretty healthy and fun for the first 3/4 days but at the end of the 2nd week.... really painful!!

Best breakfast was in the sheen falls hotel. beautiful creamy scrambled eggs and bacon... but the bacon wasn't cheap thin rashers... no, it was a really big couple of slices of the bacon you'd eat with cabbage. lightly fried/browned on boat sides...
They also did lovely wild smoked salmon topped with a few pieces of fresh grapefruit...
