I got disposable razors in Lidl recently and they are pretty good. They are less than a euro too for about 10 of them so last me a good couple of months. I aslways thought the mach 3 was a bit of a scam. My skin is sensitive and the disposables are the ones that suit me best with a good quality gel which is more important than a (ridiculously) expensive blade.

I use a cheap shaving brush, Mitchells wool fat soap, Proraso shaving cream and Aldi 3 blade razor system.

The mix of the soap and cream is very nice.

Best badger brush some shaving soap bar and a safety razor
Funnily I learned to shave with my dads safety and then used plastic yokes for twenty years because I thought he was being old fashioned
Went back to the safety a few years ago and the difference is massive

11oz is around 300-330 ml. They are produced for the US market and not here as the measurements here are metric. I have rarely seen a shaving foam in Ireland more than 200ml but they are available. It is usually the unheard of brands that come up with them. Wait for a 2 for the price of one offer in Tesco and then stock up on the high end gillette gel, I find them very good.

I use disposables sometimes and Wilkinson Sword others.

Tend to avoid Gillette as they sponsor Thierry Henry.

    The cheating fecker.

I have two German made Merkur razors, a Progress and a Futur.

For soap/foam I switch between Mitchell's Wool Fat and Proraso sensitive soap. For on the road I use Nivea gel.

Other than that I have a badger brush.

Check out the shaving forum! :-)

P.S. It's nice to have a thread going on here that isn't about sexism and men's rights. Very important topics in my mind but something nice and simple can be good too. ;-)

    - '61 Gillette Fatboy with Feathers blades, or a Dovo 'Master' cut-throat (at the weekends).

    - Badger or Boar (choose from a few pretty good options)

    - Martin de Candre, or Tabac, or Mitchell's Wool Fat, or one of a range or Mike's Natural (favourite = Hungarian Lavender or Barbershop), or one of a range of Geo F. Trumpers creams (favourite = hard to pick a winner...I like Rose, Almond, Lime, Sandalwood, Violet).

You don't even want to get me started about my post-shave...

I wet shave my head 3 times a week, i use a ladies Gillette razor, it gets a much closer shave and doesnt irritate the skin like some male ones ive used. Tesco often have them on sale, 4 pack for €3.49.

cheap ass yellow bic razors and the total shaving solution stuff, strangely fantastic shaves for how cheap it all is.

been cold water shaving the last week or two as well and it's faaaaar better than the hot water shaves I was doing up until then.

Those bic razors always cut me to ribbons, I find Lidls much better.

they always cut the **** out of me too until I started using the total shaving solution stuff. hair just falls off now at the slightest provocation

The bic ones used to leave a small tuft of hair just under my nose because of the fat headed shape of the razor. No complaints about the LIDL ones. It is all in the gel I think.
    I cannot imagine a cold water shave:eek:

I was always under the impression that a warm water shave, opened up your pores & softened the hair, making it easier to shave, with a splash of cold water afterwards, closing the pores and reducing redness caused by the blade.

However from a number of comments I've seen here and this article, I'm going to give it a lash tonight I think :)

Use a mens facial scrub with warm water, scrub for 20-30 seconds and put your foam or gel on top of it,unbelievable close shave.

I always found a cold water shave difficult to bear, perhaps its something your skin needs to adapt to, I find that the razor tends to not glide as smoothly when using cold water.

For me I soak a facecloth in very hot water, whack it on my face for about ten to 20 seconds, small bit of foam and quick easy shave as a result. Generally use disposable razors , have experimented with electrics (didnt take to it) and various different brands but always reverted to the trusty Gilette disposables.

Most blokes who think they have sensitive skin only have sensitive skin from using cartridge razors and canned gel/foam.

I dunno man, i've tried many many different things with shaving, with oil being the least irritating for my skin but still getting breakouts using it. Grew a beard and use a trimmer now and again so i don't look prehistoric and voila- the business!

Mods move this or refer me to another thread if it has already been asked - not really up on mens shaving! Anyway:

My OH has dry skin and by about lunchtime his face is itchy - he says its from shaving. He even itches in his sleep which is driving me nuts! :(

Any suggestions on what products he could use to help - he uses Aveeno cream but it doesn't seem to do the job.

coconut oil is a pretty good and cheap moisturiser. I have rosacea which leads to dry/itchy skin if I don't take care of it and some coconut oil in the mornings does the job for the rest of the day. you can pick it up in dunnes/supervalu

Have quite a heavy growth but a brush or towel with scalding water first, then a generous, hot lather, wipe off, lather again then a Gillette blue 2. Been shaving this way since the mid 80s. Impeccable results.

Hey lads, wasn't sure whether I should start a new thread or not, but said I'd try here first.

Any recommendations on a decent beard/stubble trimmer? Realistically, I don't want to be spending over a 100 quid, but perhaps some of ye have might be able to provide a few suggestions :)

This is what I use & I would recommend it.

I rarely wet shave/use razor blades as I like to have a bit of stubble and look very young when clean shaven.

The head is adjustable from 0.4mm upwards - I would shave 3mm all over, then .4mm under my jawline and use an electric razor or razor blade if I'm in the form under my jawline also.

I've been using the razor for ages and have no complaints in the sense that it hasn't broken, it doesn't need much maintenance and one charge lasts ages with it.

I've just checked argos and there's this alternative which you can use as a more overall grooming device I'd imagine.

Had that first one before and was very happy with it, but the part connecting motor to head/blade broke when I was flying back home from NY :(

Probably pick it up again now seeing as though you've gotten good use out of it.

I must be the only guy that uses an electric razor so by the sound of it. Not that it makes much of a difference. My 5 o'clock shadow seems to start at 2! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Wilkinson Sword razor and, if I've not in too much of a rush, some L'Occitane soap with a badger hair brush.

If it's a lazy weekend when I'm not in a rush, I'll break out the Dovo Solingen and have an old fashioned straight razor shave.

Sounds like you're mixing up cause and effect. :-)
Youl never get a proper close shave with an electric razor.

Probably.. but I'd be afraid of slicing myself open or something (shaving was unfortunately self-taught when I was younger).

I use a beard trimmer most days but for a close shave made the change from your standard razor to a safety razor and the difference is great, the standard ones usually tug a lot around my chin area and it made for very uncomfortable shaving, not a problem with the safety razor though.

Any of you gents ever manage to shave without nicking yourself? I never seem to be able to get away without even a tiny nick.

I have quite thick stubble and it wrecks my head, get a few ingrown hairs right at the bottom of my neck, sometimes have to tweeze em out, but now found a good exfoliation with some lather right before shaving is really helping...

I have to shave in shower after a good hot rinse, use a Wilkson Sworks Quattro qs with Loreal Tough Beard or Nivea Sensitive, finding it harder some times to get a really close shave in bits...

Has anyone with some ingrown hairs successfully used a straight edge? I'd love to try it but worried I'd take any little ingrown hair bumps off in chunks! :o

I used to get a lot of ingrown hairs and itchiness. I use a double edge razor and brush now. It makes a world of difference.

Anyone who hates shaving or gets bad ingrown hairs I'd recommend trying a decent double edge and brush shave. I actually like shaving now.

Yes, shaving is a chore...

So any recommended sites to buy or brands you use that works well? As I know nothing about them...

Varying degrees of beard for me for the last year or so.

Have a Merkur Progress and all the bits and pieces as well and used that for a while but even then still found shaving a chore tbh. Beard suits me better anyway I think.

Now just use standard disposables to tidy up as necessary.

The shaving technique you use is more important than the blades or the foam or gel or cream you use.

I got some of that stuff for Christmas, as well as a shaving brush. I've never used a brush before, how do ye use it? :o

Do I need to mix the cream with water or anything?

Get a small bowl of some sort.
Rub the brush in the soap,a tiny amount will do,dip a corner of the brush in the water and shake off, lather up un the bowl.
    Apply to a wet face.
