People in Lusmagh spotted it first and it died out in clonfert so I reckon it travelled around 4 or 5 miles. As to how long it lasted I can't say. No doubt it will be all over the news tomorrow and the experts can tell us.

Fantastic shots! So lucky to catch a shot like that. Hopefully there wasn't too much damage done, but its mad to think we get tornadoes that size in Ireland!

RTE have a report from the area
A freak weather event in east Galway has caused structural damage to a number of buildings this evening and knocked down several trees.
There are no reports of any injuries but power supplies have been affected around the Clonfert area.
ESB crews and Galway County Council staff are working at the scene.
Locals have been describing how a black cloud roared into view around Clonfert shortly after 6:30pm.
One eyewitness, who was in the local church at the time, heard what she described as a "terrible sound" and went outside to see the cloud spinning as it moved along.
Parish priest Fr John Naughton said the way in which trees had been damaged was “almost indescribable”.
He said branches had been whipped away and that a number of old trees in the area had been uprooted.
There are reports that old gravestones in the cemetery adjoining St Brendan's Cathedral in Clonfert have been knocked over by the winds.
A number of roofs have also been dislodged from farm buildings.
It is understood the roof of the tea rooms at the back of the Emmanuel House of Prayer in Clonfert has been badly damaged.
A number of trees have fallen on the approach road to the house.
Fr Naughton said the cloud seemed to have gone along a narrow strip around Clonfert.

If a funnel cloud touches ground, isn't it a tornado? albeit a mini one?

Any Tornado in Ireland is fookin' HUGE *:D

*Considering we rarely get them !

That looks a bad ass tornado thanks for posting OP

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭babybrian

I saw it as just starting and I'm thinking it was somewhere around Meelick weir from my best guess, moved along pretty lively but definitely wasn't touching the ground then I lost sight of it for maybe 90 seconds and when I saw it again it had gone north and looked to be hitting ground over clonfert direction.

Last I heard about 40 a year ~ usually rain wrapped and only detected by the damage left behind. The vast majority seem to be touchdowns, this one was on the ground and engaged fully, arguably the biggest tornado identifiable in Ireland's recent weather history.

We'd have two EF1s already this year.

My grandfather often seen them out fishing in Meelick over the years but never described anything this big. i wonder if the Shannon is a catalyst for them.

A tornado is a tornado end of.

And this most certainly was not a 'mini tornado' going by the damage reports.
