New Tesco Mobile data add-on: 5GB for €10

We were given a heads-up from the TM reps on their forum a few weeks ago about a new 5GB data add-on and a reduced price 1GB add-on. And now they have confirmed that the new add-ons will go live from tomorrow.

    5GB for €10 and the 1GB add-on is cut from €6.99 to €5.

So with a €20 top-up you can get free calls to all networks and buy the unlimted text and 5GB data add-ons. That beats 48 which is very limited on landline calls included in their €20 package whereas as it is effectively unlimited with TM.

    with 48 e20 gives you:
    All calls
    to any mobile network
    All texts
    to any mobile network
    5GB internet
    + 60 landline minutes

    now how is tesco better?

Good if you can get the network. Tesco's problems are getting more and more frequent. Every little helps me to move network! Starting to be a bit of a joke between myself and the missus.
Check their facebook page as poeople complaining right now with the network down second time this week.....https://www.facebook.com/tescomobileireland

No restriction on landline calls plus you do not have to pay €20 to get the whole package. You can top-up by €15 if you have a clubcard and get the free calls, buy a €10 or €5 data add-on and use the various free messaging services with your data bundle meaning that you can get free calls, plus texts plus 1GB of data for as little as €5 or 5GB for €10! Its a lot more flexible package.

cant remember last time when I used landline number, thanks for the info tho

Just to let you all know, if you use €5 worth of clubcard vouchers, you'll get it bumped up to €15, which pays for all the above.

Topup €15 = Free Calls to Landines & Mobiles. (If i register Clubcard)
    Remaining Credit €15
    5GB Internet €10
    Remaining Credit €5
    Cabbage 250 Web Texts €0
Remaining Credit €5 to spend on international calls

    Is this Correct :)

Aren't tesco and 48 both using liffeytelecom I don't understand how tesco can feck it up and 48 not I've had flawless service from 48 I have to say.

Yeah. Plus there are a whole range of other free messaging services that you can send texts with using your 5GB of data.

Yup I see 48 are down too, which seems to be a common occurrence with them. Both Tesco and 48 are using O2's network so unsurprising to see them both down at the minute. Very off putting to use either service when you see them going down so often.

Cabbage isn't working currently with TM. Tesco changed their website lately and cabbage hasn't been working since

I'm a bit disappointed by the new bundles. I thought the 1gb bundle might be nearer €3 to compete with 48

    Quick Answer: International Calls.

    Long Answer: Same as above.

So is it true that you cannot use Cabbage to send Tesco Mobile Webtexts

Major collapse of Eircom's network yesterday evening. It caused all other ISPs and some mobile networks to have trouble also.

Did you have to re-register recently after Tesco reworked their website? I did.
Could you tell me how you've put in your Tesco details into Cabbage?

I did have to go through the registration process again when I logged into mytescomobile the first time after the new website went up. However the Cabbage app I have (android) is the exact same with the exact same details. I haven't changed a thing on that or deleted and re-loaded it.

    Oh right. Thanks.

Cabbage stopped working for me and I assumed it was to do with the website account changes. It isn't working for my wife either.

I must have sent that text yesterday using the network. I tried out cabbage earlier and it was not working. I'll unsubscribe and reload it later and see how that goes. I'll let you know.

Because of the tethering I'd imagine so that people do not jam the network downloading massive files. They are promising to eliminate or raise that threshold soon though.

Fair enough mate.....in normal day to day use is 2mb fast enough though!?

You can probably stream most content okay on 2MB. Chances are though and this goes for all networks if you're in a building or in some other black spot you won't achieve near the limit.

Yeah everything bar high resolution/HD streaming or gaming I'd imagine. Normal browsing would not be affected.

I can get 2-3Mb most times.

PS because of the outage yesterday the TM reps on their forum have stated that they have had to delay the launch of the new data bundles. They will be up soon though.

Though to be honest, it is all quiet complicated compared to 48. Much easier to explain to family and friends how 48 works, €20 gives you unlimited calls, texts and 5GB data.

Even as a software engineer, trying to understand the Tesco deal gives me a headache!

I hope 48 respond by including unlimited free landline calls, I wouldn't even think of moving then.

Would 1gb be ok for facebook and twitter?

It's not working for me either. I've sent a mail to the developer for clarification.

1GB is definitely enough for that

Yes, anyone can sign up for them. You just have to give a date of birth that makes you between 18 and 22. No biggy, my mum and dad is on them and they aren't 18 that is for sure! :D

Data speeds are about 3mb, the same as Tesco Mobile, they are actually owned by the same company as Tesco and use all the same gear.

If you PM me, I'll send you a link where you can order a SIM card for 48months and you will get €10 off the first month too (I'll also get €10 off for referring you, full disclosure, hope the mods don't mind, this is why I'm not putting up the referral link).

I just checked the Tesco Mobile website and the 10euro for 5GB is not updated, nor the 5euro for 1GB.
On the website it says 6.99 for 1GB

Will the site be updated or is it all lies

New bundles are now live. Can be purchased as either automatic 30 day recurring bundles or once-off (note: with the once-off bundles if you buy another one prior to the existing bundle expiring then it gets queued and any unused data allowance gets transferred over to the new bundle i.e. if you still have 1GB of a 5GB bundles unused if you have another bundle queued the unused 1GB gets added on to the new bundles giving you 6GB and so on).

Ohhh.. that is interesting, does that mean you could buy the 5GB bundle the first month, only use 1GB and then just buy the 1GB each month for the next 5 months. So you might end up having something like:

    Month 1: 5GB (1GB used)
    Month 2: 6GB (2GB used)
    Month 3: 5GB (2GB used)
    Month 4: 4GB (2GB used)

    etc....

That could work out quiet well, on 48months at the moment, I typically use more then 1GB, but less then 5GB, so if the above is true, it could work out quiet well.

I'm not absolutely sure on that one - where you are purchasing different bundles - but I do not see why not. Its a question you should pose to them on their forum. They will give the correct answer.

I'd rather unlimited mobile over landline. I bought a gig with Tesco last week but will be switching to 48 once my credit runs out.

Its both all mobile networks and landlines with TM whereas landlines are limited to just 60 minutes with 48.

It's 20 free credit with tesco, I don't have a clubcard. Anyway 48, 10 a month will suit me fine, TM can't beat that as they don't even give you any internet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭groom

Yeah I've been looking at the Guido and it looks pretty good.
The €3 addon for 1GB is good too

TM should have reduced their 1GB addon inline with that.

For a €10 spend 48 is better than TM
For a €15 spend TM is better than 48
For a €20 spend TM is better than 48's €20 Don

How is TM better as you don't get any data?

30 day sim only is also not unlimited and 4 gigs less data.

You buy addons out of your credit. Unlike 48 (or TM 30 day sim) your spend gives you credit that can be spent in different ways

€15 top up buys unlimited calls (including landlines), unlimited texts and 1gb of data. €20 top up buys all the same except 5gb of data.

Or you can choose not to buy the addons if you're only interested in making calls and then after your month of unlimited calls you still have €15 credit to spend

If you top-up with Tesco Mobile by €15 you get unlimited calls to any mobile network and landline.

You can then purchase the following add-ons out of your €15 credit:
    - Unlimited texts €10
    - 1GB of data €5

Alternatively if you top-up by €20 you get get unlimited calls to any mobile network and landline.

You can then purchase the following add-ons out of your €20 credit:
    - Unlimited texts €10
    - 5GB of data €10

Tesco Mobile also has a few other advantages over 48months:
    - Includes free calls to landlines, 48months only includes 60 minutes to landlines
    - 250 webtexts, 50 which can be international (48months has no webtext facility).
    - Tesco mobile supports data roaming abroad.
    - Tesco has much cheaper texts and calls to foreign numbers.

    48months has it's own advantages:
    - €10 free when you sign up if referred by a friend.
    - You get €10 each time you refer a friend.
    - EU Roaming add-on gives 15 minutes of calls back to Ireland and receive calls for free when roaming in Ireland for €3.50 per month, a very good deal.

I'm currently with 48months and I'm very happy with it, but I have to say Tesco's deal is very tempting, 48months will have to change their plan slightly to keep competitive IMO

Been with 48 for over a year, granted they were down twice in a week, first time was only an hour or so second time was more serious, but thats the only time its has happened so wouldnt call it a common occurence.
They posted a full explaination on their website and compensated all members with 2 extra days membership,i used to be with O2 and experienced at least 2 serious outages with them in previous years no explaination or compensation was ever provided... i'll be continuing with 48 :)

Have to agree. The 48 €20 plan is more than sufficient for my needs and the €10 plan is ideal for my kids, but Tesco have certainly closed the gap, will be interesting to see if the 'big players' react as they must be losing customers rapidly.
Credit to 48 months, they have really shaken up the market and saved us all a few quid.. member or not!
