Xtra-vision Closing Sales

Was sure there would be a thread about this - but I couldn't find one. Mods please delete/lock if a duplicate.

Was in Blanchardstown Xtra-vision Yesterday - serious clear out of stock - 80% off marked prices. With new stock coming in all the time from other branches.

Ex Rental Blueray films are 2 to 3 Euros. Got some nice double BD disk sets (look out for non boxed - better selection left). DVDs are from 1 euro upwards.

Some Console hardware (chargers, cables, cases, remotes, rechargeable batteries) all about 1 or 2 euros - but all the good stuff like controllers gone.

PC games are 2 euros upwards - console games seem more expensive but there are lots PS3/XBOX/3DS games.

All the large Posters are 1.50

Greeting cards (if you are into that) are from about 20c to 50c each.

Staff were saying it may be becoming a HMV very shortly.

There's a poster in the Mullingar branch saying something about it becoming hmv (I can't actually believe it :D), didn't get to check out the store yet but I would bet they are having something similar

The Tralee store has been running a 'closing down' sale for what must be 3 months now. Lots of good stuff if you want a collection. DVD's without the sleeve €2/3 and circa €6 with the original sleeve.

the closure of all these stores (seemingly in part due to piracy) is ironically going to cause more piracy.

Drove out on Sunday as the Leixlip one closed a good while ago. Wanted to see if they were still doing the Game-on deal. Wasted journey :(

Nutgrove Closing but will reopen as a HMV according to the staff member.

You're way off the mark there. It was bought as a going concern by the same company that bought HMV. Clearly there is not much money to be made in renting DVDs.

Some stores will reopen and be rebranded.

    So fill the boots now!

Blanch didn't have more stock of anything decent when I was in there a month ago.

    Posters now 3 for €1
Greeting cards now 10 for €1.
Forgot both of those before I stocked up on the unboxed dvd's.
Also got a Playstation move navigational controller for €9.
    Could see any boxed games.
    Playstation 2 accessories 20c+
    Wii accesories I think 50c+

Not sure how I am way off the mark. Xtravision went into receivership specifically quoting piracy as one of the reasons. You are correct that the company purchasing is also connected with HMV. But, as you've also said, there "clearly isn't much money to be made in renting DVDs" - and that, as I originally said, is due to piracy.

Quote from Xtravision on appointment of a receiver:

"We're still facing the dual threat of online piracy and the ongoing downturn in consumer spend," Xtra-vision's spokesman said.

‘While the company's retail business continues to grow, its movie rental business has declined more rapidly than anticipated - most noticeably in areas with high speed broadband - which is linked to high levels of illegal downloading,’ the statement said.

Other half wanted to see what all the commotion was about for herself. Did any see PS3 games when I was there originally. Noticed them when I came back with herself. Shop wall black at this point. They were continuing to mark stuff down.
I had picked up a 2nd PS3 Controller for €20, when I was back with herself. There was two left now marked at €5. Doubt they lasted 5 mins.

Is Blanchardstown still open? I've been dropping in there every now and again, but it was supposed to close last Sunday. It sounds like it's still open.

    I almost feel bad -

but yesterday I bought 21 decent Blueray discs for 6 euros the lot from there -
and couple dvd box sets (futurama was one) - 50c each.

    Also got a couple 3DS games and a Wii U game - 50c each.

All probably I could have watched on Netflix - but you just cannot beat the quality of the blueray discs, picture and sound and all the extras you get on them.

I imagine all they have left know is all the unboxed stuff, posters and cards. No promotions on the food for some reason. Must moved all the unboxed stuff from store to store as they finish shuting 1. the amount of unboxed merchantise is unreal.

Anyone know if HMV are accepting Xtravision gift cards? I've about 40 quid of store credit on one I was saving to put towards some xmas pressies but I'm thinking they won't exist by that stage.

There are quite a few shelves still of boxed DVDs - but I didn't look through them. Boxed Bluerays are still there - two for 2 euros - but not anything anyone is interested in.
And yes - unreal quantities, thousands of unboxed BD, DVD, PC Games, XBOX discs still there.

Picked up an Electric Guitar to PC cable for a few cents which I hope to have fun with.

Staff member I spoke to said they were expecting the store to close on Thursday early - and they would restock and open anew Friday !? as a HMV possible rental? store - maybe only half the store while they redecorate. Dunno if realistic - seems a very challenging time-scale.

I get the feeling that staff are as much in the dark as us. Heard a staff member yesterday saw they would close for 4 weeks and open with all new stock. Seem completely different from what you heard.

Blanch is indeed open - I was there at lunch time.
Not much left though apart from alot of chick flicks on DVD and Bluray and also Steven Segal movies.
Might be worth a look for anyone looking for a load of single disc movies but there are no box sets.
No xbox games left. No accessories apart from a few crap Wii ones.
No chargers etc apart from a few Sony Ericsson.
Loads of posters but they are rolled up so you cannot see what they are
Loads of cards - birthday cards etc - think they were 10 for a euro :)

Their inability to adapt to the change in the way people watch movies lead to their downfall. Look at the success of Netflix as an example.

Not disagreeing with you. But while Netflix is successful I don't think it's down to its movie offerings. Xtravision would have had to go more the route of Vudu to cater for new release demand.

Piracy is still a big reason for their downfall though. No amount of adapting their business can really cope with the fact that it now takes 5 minutes to download a perfect rip.
