Applegreen diesel

Does anyone here run their car exclusively on Applegreen diesel, specifically the M1 services at Castlebellingham? The wife has had two cars develop possible fuel related issues and always fills up there.

I've heard reports of dodgy diesel but they're always second or third hand so I'm looking for people with actual issues (or non issues).

Never used that stn and I've always had a petrol.

But what exact problems are being experienced ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 269 ✭✭Eaglebridie 32

I fill up weekly at Apple Green Kilkenny with diesel for the past 2 years, have to say that I've no issues whatsoever with fuel quality & appreciate that usually they have lowest prices in KIlkenny or there-a outs. Car serviced twice a year ,nct etc, so no problems here.

Have actually found the diesel from Applegreen on the M4/M6 to get absolutely shíte MPGs. And I've been told by a number of people that they wouldn't use the fuel.

    Anecdotal... yes...

    dodgy fuel...maybe

The M1 place Castlebellingham seems to have joined the new fuel traders association that checks for dodgy diesel and the like.

I've filled up there a couple of times and got the same mileage I usually get and no problems.

I run my car on apple green diesel exclusively and have been for a few years. Never had a problem with it. Can't comment on that particular station but I'd assume they get all the diesel from the same source.

I switched to applegreen a couple of weeks ago, but, after a few fills, a few k km and a 0.5 l/100km increase I wont be shopping there any more.

I'm loathe to go to Topaz as they are too dear, but everything else seems muck

Slightly OT but I find their petrol rubbish.my car constantly returns 8.4l/100km with topaz but it goes up
to 8.8/9.0 with apple green fuel as a result I refuse to buy it there no matter how desperate I am.

I used to fill up in applegreen all the time as it is on my way to the motorway. But recently I started using a Maxol station near where I work and I definitely get better mpg in maxol. And generally that particular maxol is about 1c cheaper than applegreen.

Again, just anecdotal, but it is what I have found personally over the last 6 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 170 ✭✭db330

I ran applegreen diesel for the 2 or 3 years now, then filled at topaz a few months ago and got an extra 50km's per tank so now us topaz and i am consistently getting better mileage.

Although considering another change in garage as my topaz recently is requiring more diesel to fill the tank (up to 10L extra in an 80L tank or 7L in a 60L tank)

Applegreen M1? Decent tyre pressure machine, nice atm but sh*te fuels

Esso, Texaco or the local Campus fuel depot for me, consistent decent quality fuels

Although I got diesel in Texaco Dundalk (border yada yada yada) and the car was smoking like a train as well as guzzling the diesel down :(

I got Apple Green once and the car lost power and the mpg went to hell.
I never pass a maxol, their fuel is excellent.

I filled my tank with Tesco fuel and got a figure of something like 870 km until empty, went to a texaco and filled the tank to 960 before the pump stopped

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,593 ✭✭✭Northern Monkey

I find the MPG poor using the Castlebellingham services fuel. I've used other applegreen stations and had better MPG

it's probably just me who doesn't quite understand this ^..

Possibly the mfd shows the range with the current diesel in the tank?
But that is worked out by your recent driving so hardly accurate.

Instead of quoting actually mileage done, its the reading from the range estimation on the trip computer. A very, very inaccurate way of doing your mileage calculations. Every car has an A and B trip meter, just use it.

Having done the same route every day for about 6 months, I can safely say I get far better mileage on Esso and Maxol, than say Tesco or Applegreen. On the cheap fuel side I'd get a fuel light at 340 miles, on Esso or Maxol I could easily hit 380 miles before a fuel light. The average is right in the middle at 360 miles per tank. I actually don't even use the fuel indicator any more, I can tell to pretty much the mile when I'm going to need to fill.

Cheap fuel is cheap for a reason folks.

I've never had an issue with AppleGreen fuel. I get close to 1200km to a tank of diesel in the passat, in fact I use nothing else only AppleGreen diesel. I'll take a snapshot of the mpg clock later on and post same.

Fuel issues is a broad term. What exactly happened the car? Was it run bone dry before a fill of diesel? Was the filter changed and treatment added after the first issue?

I use that station at least once a week in my travels to the north. Never had any trouble with the diesel. Not exclusively that station but I guess at least 50% of all my fills.

Unless the op returns to tell us what the actual problem is....

And here I am. I waited until some replies were in so that the thread didn't go down the route of diagnosis. She had a 2000 Focus estate which developed a fuel pickup issue. May have been air in the system but it's still not fixed yet. We've then moved onto a 407 which misses around 1750rpm. Could be EGR or dodgy fuel.

Again, I hasten to add that I'm not blaming Applegreen for either of these things but a fresh tank of good diesel is a cheap fix still in progress.

Yeah, I run on Applegreen (St. Agnes' Road) diesel exclusively and have never had any issues. Average about 6.36L/100km. 05 B6 Passat 1.9 TDi. I'd be doing about 70% extra-urban, though.

How many litres to fill your tank from empty? Just interested to see what your l/km is.

Apple green is **** cheap fuel (diesel) u get no mileage out of it. i use dual carraigeway everyday & get no mileage out of it.U even waste more when u start ur car comapred to others.I found Tesco & Topaz even Amber to be way better.than it
It has to do with the chemicals they put in their fuel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,193 ✭✭✭Cleveland Hot Pocket

Tesco is muck, Topaz is usually 2-5cpl dearer than everywhere else.

Im going back to my usual EMO station from next fill. Applegreen has been terrible, a 0.5l/100km increase on the same roads

    Not as bad as applegreen
Tesco is same nearly as topaz it is from the same place/supplier. although that could differ from station to station.

U should try another station just once or twice (if price is reasonable not 2 dear ) & see would u notice the difference.

We wouldn't be the best at keeping track of MPG in the diesel to be honest :o we do find that some filling stations fuel will see us a little further than others.

Petrol wise though, I will only fill up in Texaco or Maxol. Topaz/Applegreen if I've no other choice but I haven't visited Esso in a long while. Used to find that their petrol wouldn't last as near as other stations

Either way, we've never experienced any car related problems due to the fuel we use :)

All fuel in ireland is from the same place
    Different places add different things

well i used applegreen for ages and was getting about 800km to the tank..went to esso for last 2 months and the on average is closer to 900km now. I got 930 before a refill the other day and there was still 3l remaining..so deffo showed me better results from Esso.

Does anyone know if the additives make one brand better than another for conditioning your engine.

Everyone seems to be talking in terms of MPG from each brand, just wondering if there's any chance that one is lower MPG but better for engine wear.

I know this would be alot harder to prove given its a long term monitoring.

You shouldn't be putting diesel in the Aston, Mr. Bond.

Chevron's "Techron" additive blend is very highly thought of in the automotive industry.

I generally use the Castlebellingham Applegreen(s) weekly. Ocassionaly, I use the Texaco on the N2 in the ward. I've noticed no change between MPG and the two stations and I've clocked up 100k with applegreen since it opened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭greenflash

I posted on here months ago looking for suggestions why my Jetta's mpg had dropped dramatically and the car's power seemed to be down. At that point I was getting less than 500 miles to a tank from pure motorway driving. I had been filling up at Applegreen Castlebellingham twice a week. I stopped working in the north and started getting my Deisel from Topaz or Tesco and the improvement in the car's performance and economy was instant. I now get 600+ miles on a tank if I drive purely motorway.

That's with 2700km on clock 2 using only AppleGreen Diesel and a drop of dipetane every month. So the people who think Apple is muck may need to rethink that science experiment

any decent diesel will return that, in a good diesel that delivers the ability to return good mpg.......its more about the car, and not the diesel.......and I can assure you that I don't need to rethink anything, and this comes from someone who used to buy over €4000 worth of applegreen diesel for my truck, cars and vans every month - and paid a heavy price for using their liquid derv muck.

I am beginning to think that maybe there's an issue with specific Applegreens and proximity to the border. This is something I intend actually checking over the next month.

    Where do you fill?

I've exclusively filled up in Apple green in Dundalk for the past year. Never thought about it before but I have a constant anti-pollution warning on the car. Gonna change over the next few weeks for Maxol and see if it makes a difference. MPG is fine though in my experience

I seriously doubt that. Their pumps are sealed by customs and checked regularly and even if they were slightly out to honestly expect anyone to believe that they could be out 10litres in an 80l tank is slightly ludicrous.

Well theliquid muck as you call it does the job for me. My car runs fine on Apple Green and I think your business case is a weak one. There are lots of other factors around fuel efficiency.

Having said that has anyone bothered to contact AppleGreen to check the tanks at Castlebellingham?

what you think you know is deeply flawed and incorrect. My family own a haulage co that spends thousands per day on derv, and we know thru' industry knowledge and buying experience that its to be avoided at all costs....but to posters like you, who know it all, because they run a mickey mouse dci or tdi yoke in and out to work burning maybe €40 quid a week, yes,.....you know better.
