    If I just sat down when the Gardai came to take me to jail they would use violence to drag me for not just going. I wouldn't have to resist, just do nothing and they'll start dragging me..... that is the violence I speak of. I wouldn't consider doing absolutely nothing to be resisting anything. It's just not complying with the demands of someone else.

    And it's a licence fee, not a tax..

    My argument is that since no crime is being committed against a person, no harm has come to anyone and in effect, not having a TV licence has no effect positive or negative on anything, then it should not be considered a crime to take before the courts. So the fine should just not exist.

    And by getting a driving licence you're choosing to drive and choosing to avail of a service. By just owning something that can receive a transmission doesn't mean you intend to use that service. I have not watched a show on RTE in probably 5 years or any other TV station for that matter. Why should I have to pay?

    The TV licence doesn't just pay for TV.

    if you don't use the car you don't have to pay the tax! when you want to renew your tax after a period of not using your car you can go to Garda and they'll get you a cert which you present to motor tax office and the new tax commence form the date you give to motor tax.

    So no, if you don't use your tv for receiving tv signal you should not have to pay tv licence! ridiculous fee!

    Eh, no. If your car is parked in a public place, you have to pay the road tax. It doesn't matter if you use it or not.

    fair enough, since it's parked on the public road you're using some kind of public service. if it's parked on your driveway there is no offence as it's not public place.

    so how can you pay tv licence if you don't use the service? my tv is used only for gaming and dvd's. no digital or analogue aerial, no cable tv, no tv service. what is the tv licence for? extortion for owning a tv

    Smart answer: You can go to the post office to pay your tv licence.

    Not so smart answer: It doesn't matter whether you use the tv or not to receive a signal. The fact is you need a tv licence because it's the law. I've to pay my gun licence just for the pleasure of owning a gun. It doesn't matter if it stays in the safe for 20 years, I still have to pay the licence.

    And yes, I agree with you that it's extortion for owning a tv.

    I was paying when I had tv service connected (ntl) previously and I agree that you should pay it when you actually watch tv broadcast.

    The law is the law, agreed, but the law should be updated and should be there to protect people not work against them. the rule that was put in place when the only thing you could play on tv was tv broadcast is way out of date these days when tv unit can serve as simple monitor for many different things. It just enrages me when Garda do nothing to thugs robbing houses and stealing from regular people but they get engaged in enforcing of ridiculous rules. I really believe that someone should look at it objectively and just changed it.

    With the new household public broadcast service obligation charge, or whatever the fcuk they are calling it, you won't even have to own a tv in order to pay it.

    Every household will have to pay it, tv or not.

    I wonder how that will work with businesses. At the moment, they too have to pay a tv licence if they have one.

    I wonder will every business in the country have to pay the public broadcast service charge?

    this is just not right! first property tax, like the market hasn't suffered enough, another discouragement for the buyers,
    next the water charges - shouldn't they fix the network before they start charging us? nearly 70% percent of the waste are mains leaks!! and if we are paying for the water do they guarantee the service? we will see next winter anyway...
    and then this household broadcast charge... who comes out with those ideas? haven't people paid enough? any idea when is it becoming live?

    and to answer your question they probably will have to pay it as they have to pay for water already, but since they are paying for water they are getting it even when regular people don't.
    example: charlestown shopping centre during x-mas 2010 - shopping centre below had water all the time, people living above it were cut off for nearly a week
