Now that BB is coming to an end after we started watching a few months ago we're on the lookout for a new series to watch.

The number of "old" shows that we have watched is very small as we only started over the last few months. Along with BB we watched HIMYM, GoT, Love/Hate and Revenge, aside from Scrubs i think thats about all we've ever watched!

From reading here i see a lot of comparisons with The Wire and The Sopranos which looks to be my top two with The Wire on top. This still leaves a lot like 24 and Dexter and probably loads we never heard of.

As it stands i have acquired The Wire but i'm open to suggestions of something else to watch first.

I would watch Sopranos first. The Wire is really good too but the seasons vary a lot in quality, season 2 isn't great for example. Sopranos is excellent all the way through IMO.

Try boardwalk empire . Great setting and excellent cast

    deadwood
    justified
    deadwood
    the shield
    deadwood

also battlestar galactica, farscape, babylon 5 (old, cheap looking by modern seasons and a pretty weak first season but get's fantastic as the show progresses)

    --edit

also if you're watching dexter watch seasons 1-4, then pretend the rest never happened. you'll be happier that way.

    also deadwood

im just after starting season 6 of the sopranos and its good, but not as good as i expected. I much preferred the wire. Just my opinion and a lot of people might not agree. The sopranos is probably easier to watch tho. If you do go for the wire keep at it. A lot of people find season 1 hard going and consider giving it up but stick with it and you wont regret it.
The boardwalk empire is good, didnt think it was brilliant tho.
Another one to go for is mad men, i started it and couldnt get into it. All the reviews say its great tho so im gonna give it another go once i finish with the sopranos.

Oz is pretty great too, working through it at the moment.

Yeah Oz is a great show, not one for the squeamish though. Deadwood is excellent too but its a bit annoying that they never finished it off.

Oh man my media server is going to need a HDD upgrade.

I think sci fi is out, not for me but for the wife. I have star trek TNG here that i'm still waiting for her to watch!

I think someone mentioned something about deadwood being worth a watch...

Mad Men has the advantage of being on Netflix too

Good recommendations here. Also, I recommend Deadwood.

    Sons of Anarchy
    Supernatural
    Suits
    Entourage
    Californication

It's ok.. I didn't like it much. Not a patch on BB.

    Game of Thrones
    Battlestar Galactica
    The Wire
    The Thick of It

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,440 ✭✭✭Wailin

    Walking dead
    Game of thrones
    Spartacus blood and sand

All pretty decent but none anywhere near as good as Breaking Bad in my opinion anyway.

first 4 seasons were very good, seems to be slipping a bit since then but it's on s6 now and s7 will be the last. it's similar to the shield and babylon 5 in that it was planned from the start to have a beginning/middle/end so even though s5/6 were relatively weak it's all rolling up to a conclusion.

    But as others have recommended:
    The Wire
    The Soprano's
    Dexter
    The Shield
    Game of Thrones
    Oz
    Justified

    And some others:
    Friday Night Lights
    Six Feet Under
    Californication

    Homeland!

It's almost as good as breaking bad IMO.

Yep homeland can now your mind sometimes, fantastic show. Also 24 is great, I have always loved it anyway.

I'm actually really enjoying 'Under The Dome', features Dean Norris (Hank) as one of the main characters in it too.

Homeland jumped the shark towards the end of season 2! Huge story change reasons for that!
Brody is suppose to be dead but the network exec's vetoed it!!!
    I'll give season 3 a chance! IMO

Dexter up to season 7! Season 8 was bad, the ending
was another money driven decision by the network!!

Game of Thrones is amazing tv

Spartacus is good, some amazing, some poor episodes!

    The Wire is class

I loved Burn notice, it was light & amusing most of the time!

If you haven't watched Firefly, do!

The walking dead 1st 3-4 episodes & all of season 3 are brilliant tv! You can scrub the rest! Mind numbing ****e!

Prison Break season 1, at a stretch season 2!

Under the dome is good. Also I just finished off the first season of house of cards. Very very good. Spacey is brilliant in it.

Friday Night Lights is worth downloading. Ive only started on season 2 of Breaking Bad.
waiting on the next Walking Dead season and Game of Thrones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 931 ✭✭✭aperture_nuig

    +1 to Friday Night Lights.
Looking at it from the outside might make you think it's a crappy american teen soap/drama revolving around football, but it's an amazing show. Also on Netflix!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,278 ✭✭✭x43r0

    The Walking Dead
    Friday Night Lights
    Entourage
    Dexter seasons 1-4
    House of Cards (US version)

and my personal favourite..... The West Wing

Currently on Season 4 of The Wire, really don't get the hype at all. Maybe its down to taste.

    My Top Ten would be
    1. 24
    2. The Shield
    3. Sopranos
    4. Dexter
    5. Sons of Anarchy
    6. Breaking Bad
    7. Game of Thrones
    8. Oz
    9. Homeland
    10. Band of Brothers
    Havent watched yet:
Mad Men (this one next on the list)
    West Wing
    Revenge
    Walking Dead
    Deadwood
    The Following

Sopranos and The Wire would be top of the list after that its Mad Men, Six Feet Under and at push Boardwalk Empire, all these are very different to BB tho.

I have never seen one episode of The Wire but Im very curious after all the mentions of it here- would love to hear opinions from people. What makes it so good? Is it a slow burning character development like Breaking Bad, does it end with some cliffhangers, any humor in it etc? I might give it a go when BB finishes but I would like to know what Im getting myself into.

Watched the first couple of episodes of the wire and didnt like it all. Currently watching The Sopranos, on Season5 and loving it. I must be one of the only people in the world who doesn't know how it ends!
I also watched Under the dome, Bates motel,Six feet under, Dexter.

Really don't get the love for Homeland at all.

That Carrie one is a very annoying character for me. Too emotional and going into buildings armed with a lead pipe to catch terrorists was too much for me.

It's watchable but would not put in the great or BB/Sopranos category.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 591 ✭✭✭spankysue

    Boardwalk Empire
    Oz
    Game of Thrones

Didn't think much of either The Wire or Sons of Anarchy meself, bit too lovey dovey for my liking after watching Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad :P

I honestly hope lovey dovey is only a reference to Son's of Anarchy which I haven't watched because if that's what you're calling the Wire then I'm not sure what I can do for you.

Haven't seen it mentioned yet, I've watched season 1 of Hell on Wheels and thought it was excellent.

Colm Meeney is in it and its based on the building of the railroads in the US.

Dave fanning raved about Boss which was on 4od .. I loved soapranos, breaking bad & homeland. "Boss" is right up there gripping storyline.

Loving Orange is the New Black at the moment. Not really a 'next' for me because I'm almost finished the first and only (so far) season but I recommend it thoroughly for anyone wondering what's next. Like Breaking Bad it's starting off as a comedy-drama that makes us laugh at and reflect upon the dark situation in which the protagonist(s) find themselves in. Specifically, it's about a somewhat privileged woman who finds herself in prison. Very well written and driven along by some fantastic female character actresses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭Pinkman

There are only three shows I would mention in the same breath as BB - The Wire, The Sopranos and The West Wing. Other brilliant shows I've seen that are over are Oz, Deadwood, The Shield, Damages and 24. As far as current great shows? Justified, Homeland, Game Of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Sons Of Anarchy. If you want something lighter but very addictive I'd go with Entourage and Suits. Dexter is brilliant up to S4. And i'd defiantly agree to the 'Boss' recommendations - an incredibly powerful performance from Kelsey Grammer. A real shame it was cancelled.

Generation Kill is very good and what most people wouldn't have watched from The Wire creator. Its short, only 7 episodes.

Its very character orientated. Its also unusual that it shows the cops and drug dealers 50/50 almost like 2 different story lines. Its not a comedy but some of the scenes and story lines are very funny. Jimmy the main cop is a legend.
