Too many Facepalms and LOLcats. It's a real pain in the arse for 97%* of the regular users.

    Why arent pics allowed there?

Because every thread would consist of 'hilarious' pictures making a lot of threads virtually unreadable.

Pics have been disabled in AH many years. The reason, I presume, is that people posted "funny" pictures instead of discussing properly, using words.
    For instance
There's still CVPL for that stuff.

Btw, you should have seen Feedback before the use of lolcats were clamped down on :D

In essence, I'm not for it.

It's slow enough on the touch site waiting for the youtube video placeholders to load, can you imagine how slow it'd be with all the hotlinked images?

If you absolutely MUST embed an image, use the Source URL of image here tag.

We'll see it on the touch site (Sometimes, that's a handy bug, sometimes it's a pain).

It was originally because of the volume of posts and asshats on after hours, dodgy pictures used to appear a lot. In some cases, some pricks thought it was hilarious to post hundreds of porn images at 5am.

As most of the mods were operating from work, there was the very real concern that dealing with a crappy post could lose someone their job.

I think the question was asked here recently enough, i.e. in the last six months. The level of cop on in AH has improved a lot over the last 2 years, primarily down to good, sensible, active moderation, so I reckon this could probably be lifted.

My only concern is that some posters would think an "hilarious" gif or image would be an acceptable response to a post.

Maybe have it as a perk of subscribership?

It doesn't work that way. Images posted would have to be seen by everyone or no-one.

I think what he meant is that images could be seen by anybody, but only subscribers actually have the option to embed them...?

Right. Yeah, possibly a way forward.

We'll see what the AH forum mods think.

It'd prob require some dev time, which is in short supply. However, if its an incentive for users to sub, it could pay off. I'm not sure it it really would be an effective enough incentive though...

Nah, it's a standard option. You can assign specific rights to specific users in forums. It would be trivial to give this right to subscribers (and mods) afair.

Though that's with the vBulletin permissions engine. Now that they've broken away from vB, I don't know how much of that engine remains.

I'd hate to see pics in AH... even if posting them was limited to subscribers. It's not that difficult to click on a link to an image =/

I know the forum isn't exactly a trove of intellectual discussion most of the time =p .. but the flow of threads would be ruined if even a small percentage of people were allowed to post embedded pictures. It's already bad enough with people going off on tangents and arguing over unrelated stuff in certain threads, and using silly one-liners in lieu of thought out responses.

It's fine on other forums which have a more narrow focus, but AH would just be a dumping ground for overused memes.. people posting pictures of pedobear and Scumbag Steve instead of discussing the topics at hand.

    Just my 2 cents.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing images in AH.
However trolls, re-regges and morons would most likely use it in the worst possible fashion making it a very risky proposition on a very busy portion of the site.

One useful workaround that might make image link posts more popular is to install a browser addon like hoverzoom that allows you to automatically see an image when you roll over it with the mouse.

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hover-zoom/nonjdcjchghhkdoolnlbekcfllmednbl?hl=en

It's also useful for browsing any number of pic link sites.. Like reddit for example.

Or or we could ask the admins to set up a sub forum. Throw a name on it like cool links, pics & vids. Might work, might not.

The idea, I believe is that OP wants images to enhance text discussions, not to make them the subject of the discussion, as would generally be the case in cool vids.

So from that POV I could see why an argument like "We already have X forum" wouldn't necessarily be relevant.

I might be going mad but I'm almost sure I spotted an embedded image in AH recently. Is there a workaround or do some users have more features?

Or am I just going senile?

They do when you embed them with the (IMG) tags. If anncoates was using Chrome Desktop there's a widget / app / extension (ever the fcuk they're calling it these days) that when you hover over image links it shows up the image.

For the latter, you really, really don't.

I think it's important that people know that Bubbles was not some sort of charming rogue - he was a pretty despicable individual who made threats against people and their children and who was arrested a few years back for harassment of women (I don't know where that case ended up - I know the investigating police had 1 computer in their station that was locked away in a room for the weekends, so they were most likely completely unable to comprehend the scale of what they were dealing with). I was contacted by one of his victims to confirm his identity. I've avoided saying this before but it galls me every time I see people talking about him like he was some sort of court jester of boards.

Polmki - I don't know what that guy's problem was, but he was from the UK so there wasn't really anything we could do about him.

I'd love a timeline of events with regards to Bubbles.

That'd be fairly hard as it started well over 10 years ago and most of it wasn't public. Short version: Started funny, ended very not funny.

This line is trotted out every time this topic is raised. How about having more faith in your users and at least giving it a go on a trial basis.

To detract trolls maybe it would be possible to build in a validation of having to have a hundred posts before you can post images in AH. No idea if this is possible, just throwing it out there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,219 ✭✭✭✭biko

Question for the people wanting pics in AH: what pics is it that you want to be able to post there?
We already have a "Cool Vids, Pics & Links" forum and yet still people can't help but posting links and vids in AH.
Now you want pics there too?

How can a thread in AH be enhanced by adding image privileges?

It would be nice to try it again.
Wouldn't a nice sticky at the top of AH warning people not to lose the run of themselves be enough to keep things under control. Or are there that many trolls on a daily basis that would screw things up?

That'd be a great idea Teddy if people actually followed said sticky, but just look at how many times it has to be pointed out that spelling and grammar pedantry isn't welcome in AH, even WITH the sticky at the top of the forum.

It's the classic "And this is why we can't have nice things", because some posters don't know the meaning of the word "moderation" and aren't particularly concerned that other posters may find flooding a thread with memes objectionable.

Quite frankly I'd have disabled YouTube embedding in AH also as it slows thread rendering down to a crawl on the touch site. Visiting any YouTube heavy thread in AH is just painful, so you can imagine what an image heavy thread would do.

The the title for those stickies are easily missable. I always thought they should have a brief description of the warning in the title and in caps.
