Cork can suffer badly from crosswinds and fog, could that be it? Looking at it on FR24, there's a lot of holdings, an EI flight diverting to DUB.

Right now I can see FR9729 and EI883 doing a dance in the skies at the minute. FR asking for a divert to shannon a second ago.

    This too shall pass.

All flight delayed and then diverted since this morning. Flights also cancelled departing. On the runway about to take off from heathrow for cork. Please let the fog clear :)

wouldn kerry be a closer option for divert?

suppose they are not set up to take extra aircraft, refuelling etc etc.

Wouldn't be able to take many diversions, Aer Lingus don't fly there, weather could be poor there as well and might not have facilities to handle diversions.

Looks like 2 have diverted to KIR, most to SNN and 1 to DUB - hope the fog has gone by tomorrow!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

the gatwick flight has been in a hold for the past 20 mins. surely planes can land in fog or is it a case that the airport is not equipped for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,780 ✭✭✭Bsal

Cork is limited to CATII ILS approach on runway 17 which means a decision height no lower than 100ftAGL and a minimum of 300m visibility down the runway. Right now its very close EICK 231630Z 13017KT 0200 R17/0300N R35/0250N FG VV001 15/15 Q1018 NOSIG

that gatwick flight is still trying to land, did a go around a while back and is coming in again. think one plane, a holding flight from Shannon, got in a few minutes ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 850 ✭✭✭what the hell!

Ok silly question but doesn't the plane have to just take off and go straight up into the air? The ATC would know if there are any planes around so it would be safe out...

Visibility at KIR at the moment is good, but there are 25 knots gusts. Some pretty impressive crosswind action today:

For an aircraft to depart one has to arrive......

Also, in the case of something unfortunate happening on departure the aircraft would need to be able to land back at Cork. At present the time this was not possible.

Aviation has rules for a reason, and if people get inconvenienced by then so be it.

You might to rephrase your question so I'm clear what you are asking but basically a departure is not cleared for takeoff until either it has been released by radar or the preceding departure is of a distance that on departure radar separation can be ensured.

If a landing aircraft goes around you have a possibility of many situations unfolding,if the lander is tight to the departure aircraft and accelerates faster than the departure and the two are close vertically this is called a piggy back go around, one will be turned very quickly to provide separation.

If the traffic goes around a distance before the runway the go around is protected by ATC so there will be no traffic vertically between the traffic and it's go around altitude 3000ft so lowest traffic above would be 4000ft.

Go arounds are set procedures that both ATC and pilots know so they will be protected from other traffic and ATC will know what the aircraft will do usually it's straight ahead 3000ft.

Hi, thought I'd quickly register and let others know.

I'm due on the cork to gatwick flight tomorrow at 11am - had a text message simply saying my departure airport has changed, and will receive an email later.

Phoned Ryanair, was told flight tomorrow has been diverted to shannon. No coaches arranged, make your own way there basically! Anyway ended up rescheduling for free to Wednesdays 11.40 flight

I feel really sorry for those people i.e elderely who don't have email use, as otherwise you would never know any changes were made. I've searched all over the net and only found a few pieces of news, and you guys talking about the delays today.

In summary, anyone on the gatwick flight tomorrow it has been changed to Shannon. Options are to go to Shannon with current boarding card, reschedule, or cancel and refund. Feel sorry for those that turn up and get told "oh you need to travel 2 1/2 hours right now" - only for gate to have probably closed by then.

Stupid place to have an airport on a hill

Thanks. It was filmed from a point about 500m west of the threshold of runway 08, but runways changed during the day. FR701 from STN apparently had to go around shortly before I took the video because the active runway needed to be switched to 26 during final. Two ATRs that came in before the 738 also delivered quite smoky landings, but unfortunately I didn't get them on video. Usually KIR is quite a boring place to be, but not so much today :)

Do you have to cross fields to get to that spot or is there a public road?
Any other good vantage points you can recommend?

Back again. Was on flight 715 earlier. Obviously diverted to Shannon. Pilot said visibility was down to 225m. Circled for about 15min but no change in conditions so moved on. Left Shannon at 6 back to cork airport at 8, I hate that road !!

Wife's uncle was on the Gatwick-Cork flight that landed at 18.10. Not the first time i've seen Ryanair land when others haven't been able. Strange that ;)

I hate that road as well, anyway back on topic, I have noticed that about Ryanair as well, is it a special feature in Boeings, training, balls, good luck or what?

    It's just luck I'd imagine.

Simply down to tech abilities of aircraft, some tech might not be working and pilots might not be trained or current in certain Category approaches at that time.

When I worked at Cork Airport a few years ago the joke was always if there was a fine mist then BMI were diverting.

Ryanair seemed to have the best performance over a few periods of fog so I wouldn't think its down to luck.

Has there ever been an A330 in Cork? If so when? Will it ever return?

Yes, a few rugby charters, I flew to Birmingham on a Monarch A330, horrible it was, 29' pitch, could barely get the table down and they were using this to fly to the caribbean.

What's the largest aircraft ever been to cork?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,796 ✭✭✭✭Jamie2k9

    747 I would think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭TheFitz13

Wonder what are the chances of a wide body coming to cork on a regular basis

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,184 ✭✭✭✭L1011

    Very very low

I reckon they wanted to check the nerves or skill of the pilots to see if they could get it down on 17/35.

I recall a stormy night back in the late eighties listening to ATC guide an EI 737 down onto 25, he literally talked him down like verbal ILS. ( On my excellent AOR 1000, happy days )

Considering 16/34 in dub is shorter than Cork, not a problem.I remember a 330 Taking off from it going to LAX years ago!!!
