I've gotten conflicting advice on this and it's important to me as 1000 calories of my daily is lattes, I drink on average four a day

    I've been told the following:

    1. Include them as your calorie intake
    2. Ignore them as they are liquid and at my activity level I will sweat them out
    3. Consider them in terms of carbs and exclude them.

Now I would like to put on a bit of weight and have done following a fairly unrestricted diet, but want to be more organised so I can map what I take in daily to my activity level, so which of the above is correct?

Of course you can ignore them*

    * - provided you only drink water and green tea etc.

THanks, I drink about four lattes at 250 cals per day so I was counting them.

Three people tried to tell me that they didn't count, but couldn't explain how they didn't count as opposed to milk, so I count them.

I'd be fairly active level five if that makes sense.

Perhaps they meant things like black tea and black coffee which have next to no calories as they are mostly water.

I like this thinking, means I could drink as much wine as I like ....

    No points in Guinness. Sweet.

Might just blend up my food.

Obviously the milk in a latte counts. If somebody says it doesn;t but can't justify why, then ignore this person in future for other issues.
That said, unless you are getting massive ones or loading up the sugars, they aren't 250cals a pop. A regular latte is about half that I'd guess.

So count them, but count them accurately.

When you get to level 9 you don't need to count what you drink.

If you are a heavy drinker then the calories may not have nearly the same effect on weight. I personally don't count them the same. With milk I would though.

    http://www.nytimes.com/1992/02/04/health/why-the-body-may-waste-the-calories-from-alcohol.html
weight gain was negligible in alcoholics who were given 2,000 calories of alcohol daily on top of the 2,500 calories from foods they consumed to maintain their weight. But when the same number of additional calories were fed as chocolate, a steady weight gain resulted.

Looking at cartons 100ml is 64kcal for whole milk, if you are not adding sugar then you must be having 390ml of milk per latte to get 250kcal, the calories in the coffee itself is negligible. This would need massive cups, esp. as milk which is steamed or frothed will increase greatly in volume, I think this fact is ignored by many, they look at a massive cup and treat it as being mainly made up of cold unexpanded milk. Who told you its 250kcal?

literally fell of my chair reading that!

4 lattes a day? I hope that was supposed to be per week.

McDonalds list their latte as 41kcal per 100ml.
190kcal per portion (grande size), so would be 463ml. A "tall latte" is 140kcal.

The americanos are 0kcal. So going by that and presuming their milk is the only thing contributing to calories and is 64kcal per 100ml the 463ml latte contains 296ml of milk, and the smaller one has 218ml of milk. THe additional volume made up from the coffee itself and the expansion of the milk due to steaming/frothing.

The cappuccinos have less kcal as the milk is expanded more.

If you add sugar of course it goes up.
