Insurance Renewal Arrived

So I got my insurance renewal with AXA today.
Fully comp with a named driver on a 2001 diesel S40 is coming out at 967e.
So 170e up front which is to be paid at the beginning of Oct and then 96e per month.
Was 1100 when I took the policy out.
Now, I went to the AXA website and put in my details again to get a quote, fully comp, named driver etc and Im getting a quote of 750e odd and 110e deposit with 76e per month afterwards.
Now, my question is can I do this? Cancel my policy with AXA, get my no claims cert and then insure myself again with them for the above quote?
Would they honour it? I'm also curious why the F am I being charged 200e more than if I do it online.

Nothing to stop you doing it I guess.

Have you rang around any other companies? If Axa are able to offer you that price as a new customer Im sure other will also, and there is nothing to be gained for showing loyalty when it comes to motor insurance.

No haven't called yet, but I'd be happy with that quote of 750 odd euro as I only have 1 no years claim. However you're right, I think I'll do a quick search online and see if it can be beaten.

Bear1 no offence but your a few years older than me and my quote was 1100.
Ring them all and see who gives you the best deal.

Don't see why you can't do that. I did it with my house insurance this year and saved €130.

Ring more than 2-3 in fairness. For the sake of an hours work and maybe a dozen phone calls you might save yourself a few hundred quid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Right for now I've rang two, 123.ie and FBD.
123 want going on 1500e! and FBD are looking for 1k.
Will update with any news I get

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

AXA did same to me 2 years ago although my prremium was a bit lower but there was 200 odd in the difference.
I simply rang them and told them that the online quote from their company was coming back alot cheaper and asked if this was due to policy of screwing existing customers. The woman on the phone said they were a separate division and that they did not have any contact with the online sales company.
After all the bull****, they simply matched the online quote

Ring AXA as well and tell them that XYZ is offering you ~600 and also that a new quote on their own website is 750. Tell them they need to try and match or come close to XYZ ro you're going elsewhere.

I do this every year with whoever I'm with and I can normally get them down to close to what I want.

Perfect, cause other insurance companies dont seem to want the business.
I still have 2 weeks before the renewal so I've got some time to still shop around. I want to stay with them as I'm happy with AXA, just wish the 31 days EU cover could be extended :(

I did that last year - AXA renewal was 850 or so I think, got it online with them for 650. Had no issues - they asked for proof of NCB and I just referred them to themselves!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,875 ✭✭✭✭MugMugs

    OP,

Just call them with the online reference and ask them to match it.

And call about a few other Insurers too.

You'd genuinely be surprised the amount of people who STILL just accept the renewal and pay it. You can't really blame them for trying if people won't shop around.

AXA pull this one every year with Mrs. Goose. She just phones them and gives it a bit of that American fella in the legendary Fawlty Towers episode, and sanity is restored. :D

Call it a laziness tax :pac:

All round good advice/help. I'll quote their reference of 750e and ask them to match it, if not ill cancel and re-apply :D Besides the reference is valid for 30 days I believe so they cant change that either :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,446 ✭✭✭bugler

Having been with Tesco/RSA for two years they sent me a renewal quoting a much higher premium than what I had paid before. They would not match their online quote over the phone, so I ended up cancelling one policy with them and taking out a new one.

Now, another year on and the quote is higher than the initial quote over 3 years ago when I had a provisional licence and hadn't driven a day. They were over €300 dearer than FBD. Again when called over the phone they weren't remotely interested in matching price or adjusting their quote in any way.

Right shower of bastards aren't they.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

whatever you do, just don't compare it to what you'd be paying in the UK!

cheapest I can get is €1150 here for mine.

The exact same details for the same policy on the same motor this time last year was £440 and this year (with the extra years NCB) in the UK it's gone down to £375. :(

irish motorists are being robbed blind.

Try Aviva, get a quote online. I got the best quote by a mile from them. Free fully protected no claims too.

Just tried Aviva now - if I pay in full then its just over 1k, if I pay in parts then its nearly 1.4k!!

Only another 20 years and you too can have cheap car insurance :)

Axa quoted me €900, Aviva €280,
46, + named driver, fully comp, 1.6 full no claims, fully protected NCB.

Really can't understand how they come up with their figures.

I know how.... out of their arse.

Just tried through a broker and this is where I'll end the hunt I think.
Tried Martin Insurance Brokers, cheapest I could get was 1022e with XS Direct.
It didn't make a blind bit of difference if I had 600e excess or 0e.. that has no logic to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I know premiums are different for everyone but I found AIG Direct and Allianz the cheapest two for me. Had a bit of agro getting my disc and cert off AIG but got it for a finish.

Renewals are always off the wall because insurance companies hope people are lazy and won't shop around. I very rarely stay with the same insurance company two years in a row unless they are still the cheapest.

OP when renewing my insurance this year quotes varied from 540 to 900 quid. Ring them all. PM me if you want a list of companies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Just tried Brittons, they are asking for 780e fully comp and with a named driver and with a 500e excess.
By far (apart from the online quote from AXA) the cheapest. 230e deposit though and then 64 per month for 9 months.
AXA 750ish euro with a 110e deposit and ~73eur per month.
    What do you guys think?

AIG wouldn't quote me and neither would Allianz

Cheers for the help, I don't want to bother you with writing down all the companies :) In this case Google and the phone are the job.. Thanks though

Give Liberty, allianz, fbd and first ireland a shout. If you dont want to do a lot of phone callling I would stop there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Allianz and FBD dont want the business :(
Liberty cant find my car for some reason (number plate keeps coming back wrong)
First Ireland are quoting 894e with NCB protection, 250e excess, named driver and comprehensive - that works out at 194e deposit and then 85e per month x 9 months.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dh0011

stick this reg into the liberty form and get a quote.
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/S40/1.9-D/31913541218215960/advert?channel=CARS
If it is cheap ring them and tell them about your car and they will quote you. If not all you have lost is five mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Great idea! I'll give it a go now :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dh0011

hopefully you will get a good price. Dont forget if you take out a policy to put in your local gaa club so that they get a few quid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Liberty is quoting 905e. Good thing about is the 93 days abroad thing...
Yeah I'll give Loughrea GAA 50 quid :)

I rang them this year and got 80 off the premium. I also had aviva and fbd drop the internet price when I rand them.
I would give the second best quote a ring now and tell them the best quote you have minus fifty euro and ask them to beat it.
If they do then get straight onto the previous best quote and ask them to beat the new best quote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Hmm, If I was to do that and lets say Brittons beats their only quote and then I say ok ill call back, I then risk losing the better quote right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,875 ✭✭✭✭MugMugs

Or just tell a bare faced lie.

"Liberty quoted 600, what's your best?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

I think at this point I'll push for AXA to beat the 750e offer they have given. If they cant, I'll just cancel and re-apply as a new customer as was mentioned before.

Well then in my case I'll just use their own quote... I can easily provide proof then :D
I'm thinking of saying I have a dashcam (I do)... wonder if it would lower the premium

    Don't know.
I do know however that liberty have a bonus discount that they'll give you if you ask.
My best quote was 1200 with liberty. I had others quoting me 4200! I rang liberty anyway and asked was that the best they could do for me. 2 minutes later my quote was down by 100.

I doubt a dashcam would make a blind bit of difference to be honest, but its worth a go.

Just figured it may be useful as it gives a 100% certain account of events in the case of a claim.. sure ill give it a go anyway

3 years named driving exp, the wife has insurance with 123.ie for 494 euro. The renewal quote is... 850 for tpft lite. Nononsense start at 340 euro, 400 with a few extras. I'm not even going to ask 123 to match it, the thieves!

I would ask them to match it, so I can ask them what the fcuk they are playing at!

I've had my renewal this year from AVIVA. The renewal letter stated 550 for my 1.8 mondeo for me and my wife
This was about the same as last year, but they mentioned that if I pay the full insurance in advance, the quote would be 430 because paying in installments is part of their risk rating

I Called them up to say I'd pay up front to get the cheaper rate and then out of nowhere, the girl on the phone said that she'll see if she can do any better and knocked down the price to 330 for the year.

That's the cheapest my insurance has ever been. Can't complain at all considering my wife only has a provisional and I was expecting the premium to go way up now that they're not supposed to be discounting for female drivers.

Calling them now... wish me luck!
