Or maybe a better question would be to ask how many km does your car travel for say €50?

Mine only travels about 500km for €50. Is this really bad?
What can I do to improve fuel consumption?

Depends. If you drive a 1.0 yes it is.

If its a 2-3.0 then probably not.

    Sorry, I should have specified. It's a 1.4 petrol.

Mine does less than 500km on a €90 fill. And usually it's a good bit less! But i have a heavy right foot!

    I spend about E20 weekly/every 10 days, depending. Does me for about 250km. I've got a 1.2 Fiesta.

I drive a 1.4. €70-80 gives me between 500-600km, most weeks atleast half to 3/4 of my driving is town based, sitting in traffic. without knowing what your daily drive is, that figure does not sound to bad compared to mine.

only ones that will make a real difference other than the obvious are majorly read the road ahead and slow down...

Currently I'm commuting 100km each day (50km both ways) so I'm feeling the extra difference I suppose.

My car was never great on fuel anyway.

Up until recently I just put petrol in whenever I needed it and never really noticed how much I was getting out of €50 or whatever so just starting to notice now and it seems to be 100km - €10. Was just interested to see how it compares with others.

And like you Alanst, I have a heavy right foot I fear!!!

I'm travelling back roads for 50km with a lot of stops/turns/roundabouts. I am guilty for accelerating too quickly probably also. :o

Similar to what I get, maybe slightly more. I'd say I get about 450 km for €50, but that's mostly long distance with only a small amount of urban driving (not in heavy traffic). 1.6 litre petrol engine.

Stick to max speed on the motorway and speed up/slow down plenty on the older N roads, so not the best economy.

Covering enough variety of locations that I avoid more expensive pump prices.

Yes I suppose that's helpful also. Wasn't there a website before which listed cheap pumps? On my commute I've seen one station 1.62 for 1L petrol and another for €1.57. 5c per L is noticeable if you're filling your tank every week!

€50 a week on a 1.6 petrol engine, approx 5-600kms a week sometimes more depending on where i drive,a few weeks back it took just under half a tank dublin to cork nearly all motorway driving

Eh about €120/140 to and from work (6 days)

    Kinnegad to city centre

    2.0 T Volvo S80 Manual

Edit: at 157.9 €20 will get me approximately 80 miles safely.

    Found €1.57 today cheapest around.

    €1.54 esso d8

Wouldn't this depend on the price/litre? I guess around 235 miles for 50euro in my TT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,877 ✭✭✭purplecow1977

Eh about €120/140 to and from work (6 days)

    Kinnegad to city centre

    2.0 T Volvo S80 Manual

Wow. How do you cope with such expenses? I've just come from a 6km daily commute to a 100km daily commute and the time difference to my day to factor in the drive is a definite eye opener, let alone the cost!

I find I get way better mpg driving say from cork city down to west cork, (not the greatest roads, lots of towns) than driving cork to Dublin.....
The difference is about 30 miles an hour... :) , doing 75 /80 miles an hour drinks fuel compared to 55 60 , even with a lot more stop start ect... Driving a reasonably well kept 00 fabia 1.4 ....

I like my petrol cars, drink once a month if even that , don't smoke or spend money on crap so my money goes on the car and bike.

I really need a diesel but always prefered petrol.

I will be looking to buy a used kia Sorento Auto in the new year but even that only get 30mpg average.

Smaller car be financially better but i pay all my bills etc so as i said all my spare cash goes on a nice car and the bike.

Getting around 130 miles out of 20L for the last week on long runs.
On short fun runs I'd get about 80 to my 20 L. Now to get it down to 60 miles to 20 litres! :D

    €0 per week on petrol

about €100 every 8-12 days on diesel though, which gets me about 750-850km per tank, depending on the frequency of my use of sport mode!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 488 ✭✭smoking_kills

About E80 a week, gets me 300 miles per tank. 270 if I'm late some mornings :) Thankfully the drive to work is short :D

In only a few months time the price of fuel will have changed again. Calculating fuel consumption using euro isn't going to work.
You can instead figure out what MPG your car does. This measurement will be consistent over time.

I spend about €30 a week with a Monday to Friday 25 mile round trip and a few short spins at the weekend.
Costs €80 to fill the tank (50 Liters)
Trip computer says my average is 33.5 mpg... which seems to be accurate enough. I have seen the instantaneous consumption gauge down at 7 mpg at times though...

I spend about €50 per-week on petrol, as it happens. About 250km.

Around 320 per month for 2 cars :(
200E on petrol and 100-120E on diesel per month
    1st car 1.4tsi 300km per week
    2nd car 1.9tdi 200-250km per week

No option to change for public transport as wife traveling (Blanch to Dundrum) on 1.4 petrol and I most of the commute driving kids to football trainings and games (Blanch to Coolock)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,272 ✭✭✭✭Max Power1

would ya not use the diesel rather than the petrol for doing most miles? That would reduce the fuel spend a bit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Carson10

Drive 2003 1.4 Golf. I can get on long Journeys about 800KM from a full tank which costs about €85.

My normal weekly driving, I spend about €40s worth. As I live beside my work, and most other driving is just spins and pleasure.

No need for a diesel. I get the same mileage as my friend with a 1.9tdi golf and he pays about €400 extra a year on road tax for the privelage of a Diesel. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,480 ✭✭✭YbFocus

It's very close to 100km to €10 if driven easy. Usually that isn't achieved though.
My usual spend is €90-100 a week.
gets about 900km in or around.

    Touran 1.4TSI 7.5-8L per 100km (35-37MPG) in summer and 9-10L per 100km in winter (30MPG).
I would be happy to change for the diesel but wife only drive automatic and i dont think with the loan i would achieve any savings here.

The option i am considering is Nissan leaf for her and keep diesel car for me.
