Kangoo van mpg

    I've just bought an 09 kangoo van which on initial calculations is giving 41mpg ( accurate). I was told before buying it they're far better on juice than that. I'm driving it easy carrying no loads. Anybody have a similar experience??

    Mpg will suffer from many things. How long since last service, tyre pressure, load etc.
    Mainly driving style differs, is it used in city or motorways?
    Does it have the eco-button?

    No Eco button..... That I know of.... Recently serviced, tyres checked, air filter changed( probably unnecessarily ) I drive it gently on reasonable roads and no city driving. I'm at a loss to why its so poor. I was expecting 50+mpg

    I've that engine in my kubistar (nissan) which is the same van as yours.

    Last check i did and was getting 44mpg with a fair load of ceiling gear on the roof rack...and that was motorway.

    Tipping about dublin i'm getting low 50's - mix of m50 and city runs.

    Was the fuel filter done recently ? That could have abit of an effect on it.

    By your reckoning ceiling, I'm a bit low so. The fuel filter I don't know about I just bought the van thanks guys. Been reading online about dirty egr valve????

    If you don't know when it was last changed. It is definitely worth doing first generally not that expensive or difficult to change. You might as well rule out the simple things before you go messing with egr valves etc.

    I would've thought the fuel filter would have to be rotten dirty to make a difference but its worth a gamble all the same. It's €23 plus vat from the main dealer.

    I would also check tracking .also that the back breaks are not binding.Try keeping the revs about 2000rpm.

    At that money its worth a try. It's more than likely needing to be changed anyway as most people don't change them on time. At least you will have a clean slate to work from then you will know when everything was changed. I find it good practice anyway when buying second hand cars vans to give them a full service regardless of whether or not the previous owner says its was serviced. You can then take it from there and get it serviced at the correct interval that's just my opinion on it anyway.
    If the fuel filter makes no difference you can start looking at more serious things then.

    Yes .Good mpg depends on a wide range of many different things.A roofrack for instance can add a lot to fuel usage.Also what tyres are you wearing.Mud and snow of full winters will increase your fuel consumption.The wind is a problem also.Is it 1.5 d or 1.5 td.Forgot to say look around for fuel leaks ,from the injectors back to the fuel tank.

    If you have tried everything that has being said above ,then a diagnostic check must be done.I am not sure how much renault charge for this .If you go to a backstreet garage they dont always have the same diagnostic tool for the job.Dont start replacing expensive parts till you get this done if the problem continues.

    Average on spritmonitor.de is around 47mpg (6.02L/100km) but there are quite a few around 53/54mpg. I'd say get the van checked out to be sure.

    Re filled on checked mileage today. 46.1 mpg. ( before anyone asks, I did it properly the first time:)). By any chance would the driving after a period of being idle have "blown away the cobwebs"??

    Yes it can be the case.Drive it hard now for a few days and then back to normal cruise and take another reading.Engines that have been stuffed for a few years are crap in every way.Just let it heat up before you go hard ,so as not to do any damage.Diesels are not that economical till up to operating temperature .46 is ok anyway.I would say you will see the big 50 soon.

    Stick more air in your tyres as well. The amount of vans I've seen running around at car pressure of 30psi is unreal. Vans need more wind, usually 50-60 psi. It can make a massive difference to fuel consumption.

    I have two kangoos(I'm not a huge fan of them on the reliability front tho) and they're both at 40 front and fifty rear(psi). they give mid 40's on the mpg front. I've yet to see the fabled 50+ mpg out of anything I've ever bought and run for work and I've every damn type of van going.

    Do you run reinforced commercial tyres? If so I suppose they can take the higher 50 PSI.

    Yeah, C grade tyres, they'll take 60 no bother but the ride becomes very harsh. I've bought a fair few small vans after hering how great they were on fuel. Then I get one, fill it up and drive and guess what, mid 40's...the only genuinely very economical van in the yard is a battered old 00 escort 1.8 na that appears to run on fumes, the power of prayer and the odd push. No-one ever seems to bother putting in fuel but it's constantly expected to gofer this and that. It doesn't hugely ever get fixed either.

Nuckingfacker, I agree with you about lads saying that vans are doing this and that to the gallon and when you get them they do nothing like it. In relation to kangoo reliability, I was put off almost every other van by everyone I spoke to. I really fancied an opel combo 1.3

    Also sh1te...the only one that's any good is the transit connect, and they're uncomfy and a bit thirsty. On the upside, they don't break..and if they do, you can fix them. All the rest are utter scutter IMO.

    All tyres were under 30 psi. I've upped the rears to 50 and the fronts to 40. We,ll see how that goes
