    Hey guys.

I'm looking for a way to measure distance or work done in a game of 5 a side soccer. I'm not sure if there is any readily available hardware or easy methods to measure this accurately.

    Any ideas welcome.

    Thanks

Sorry I can't offer a suggestion but I'd love to know too!

Would love to track my distance covered in matches. Wonder if a Garmin would do the job?

Garmin GPS watches operates on a point to point GPS tracking basis and as such will not pick up 5-side style change of directions etc accurately

If you get Prozone cameras installed, you can...

You could use map my run or strava but would have to have your phone in a pocket.

    Pedometer?
Don't think it would be effective as stride length varies so much.

Uses GSP also, as mentioned above it wouldn't track movement and changes of direction on a 5 a side scale.

OP only seems to want to measure distance covered/work done.

Once you know distance, you can calculate work based on bw

Technology does exist, rugby & football teams use it extensively, though at what cost I have no idea.

The point was that MapmyRun app or any GPS device wouldn't track distance

When you see it on tv, they're using a load of cameras to work it out.

But a lot of clubs use GPS-based systems OptimEye and Viper. They're not cheap though. Unless you're a earning several million.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

As said above, the GSP route is not going tp work as the 5-a side field would be too small to map runs and with the nature of the game, runs could be lateral, side stepping, back peddling which are all too intiricate for a basic GPS tracking app.

The advanced GPS system using vests is obv not a solution although I believe the Dublin and Mayo teams use them in training and games.

I was thinking if there as a way to measure speed with a watch or some form for equipment then I cold get the average speed over the duration of the exercise. I'm not sure how speed measurement equipment works so it's entirely possible it's not a valid viable.

the adidas micoach chip would do the job perfectly, you slip it into your shoes and it gives you speed info aswel, nice bit of kit
