I have Norton 360, which came with the laptop as part of a package. I am not impressed so I am looking for recommendations from the experts on this forum. Can anyone point me to a good, reliable, non system hogging security suite? Any help much appreciated. I am using Norton and also Superantispyware.

If its Windows 8 its already build into the OS. Otherwise Microsoft Essentials or Avast and MalwareBytes does the trick for me.

I have installed Comodo Internet Security. I will see how that goes.

When you buy a computer with OEM Windows 8 and a preinstalled 3rd party antivirus program, Windows Defender (also known as Microsoft Security Essentials) is disabled by default. If you want to use Windows Defender uninstall Norton and enable Defender.

How to turn on Windows Defender in Windows 8

is it worth using defender or what antivirus is considered better?

    Microsoft don't recommend it.

Here's a sticky thread with antivirus recommendations.

I have tried nearly all the free anti viruses and I found Panda cloud among the best, I don't like Avast as it's a resource hog, AVG is similar, Avira is not bad either and Bitdefender free is also very good. As for MS essentials it's not up to much and even Microsoft is telling people it 's only very basic protection, try Panda, it's not everyone's cup of tea but I like it.

According to AV-Test, the protection is rather mediocre.

I was with paided version of Avast but after I got a popup that hijacked my home page and Avast advice was it was mailware and I have to use other party tools to removed it.

I had to question why I was paying for Avast on 3 computers. At renewal time I opted for microsoft essentials its free does the job and so far no issues.

Previously I have run AVG free version thought it was good but it didn't catch everything.

I find the paid version of Bitdefender to be good value for money.

Yes I'm aware of that but all the free ones have some limitations one way or the other, sometimes it's hard to get the right one, I've got Panda on 7 and Vista, Avg on XP and 8, I've had most of the others on from time to time and I suppose the best security for your device is yourself.

Is there the same protection from a free antivirus as with paid?

My laptop came with a trial version of Norton pre-installed then I bought it. After 1 year it auto-renewed but this year I made sure auto-renew was off and I am now running Avast free version. So far so good

    Download Avast Here

Free ones offer basic protection, some better than others, paid ones tell you that your better protected but not as good as they say. A good free one and malwarebytes is really all you need.
