Tempting, given I've never done a 10mile race I'll try my best to get to this.

Did this last year. Found it ideal after Dublin. Tough mile followed by The fastest mile you will ever run. Too run a sub 5 min mile in a 10 miler is worth doing it alone. The food after it was very plentiful and all home made.
Prob stay away from those cork brownies though. Prob be stones in em

I'll only put the stones in the ones for the Kilkenny participants, the rest of the country are safe. ;)

Yes indeed Dom, the famous stook cowbells will be making a return. They are definitely unique and something different than the usual medal! :)

We just agreed with the timing company to have timing split mats on that downhill mile.

This is shaping up to be amazing. As long as I can walk after DCM, I'll be there..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭FrClintPower

I would love to do this one, I grew up in Gowran and when I was a nipper I had a friend who lived on that downhill mile and I used to be around there a lot. Probably still be injured this year, but I've noted it as one for the future. Best of luck to all concerned, great touches with the cowbell and the downhill timing mats.

Pretty interested in this one! anybody got a garmin map of the route with elevation? this downhill section intrigues me ;);)

oops just spotted the mapmyrun route there, need more coffee! ;)

First time poster, social runner. This was by far my most enjoyable run of last year. Well organised, friendly , typical parish hall feed afterwards , classy pacers and the most scenic and interesting of courses. The perfect antidote to running , hamster like, laps of the Phoenix Park.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback on last year's race.

We might get cows this year instead, to match up nicely with the cowbells. ;)

Haven't heard village runner been described as classy before! ;) Hope to see you so again this year Sharkey.

Did this last year and agree with everyone, a well organised value for money race, not one for Pb's but once you accept that...you will be fine.
I should be there if i stay injury free...ideal 2 weeks out from waterford half.
I only barely broke 63 mins last year but did the last 2m in around 11:00 mins....you would nearly fall over on mile 9 its so fast...think i did it in 5:15 and i wasn't even trying and that was after climbing everest...i mean stook!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,087 ✭✭✭BeepBeep67

Looks like I'll run this also seeing as the County XC clashes with the Waterford Half (boo)

More info can be found on our race website stook10.ie

Think I'll make it to this one Blocky. It doesn't finish around a hurling field or anything does it?

Nah all on roads, very scenic and a wicked fast finish! A hill before it but wouldn't worry about that ;), a tactical race so to speak!

We couldn't make it harder so you'll just have to run it faster!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭Beef

I've registered there anyway. I'll take the jacket in a large please. :D

    All the 3's, 3:33:33
Not what I had planned but my own fault, got too confident and upped the pace faster then I had planned and was actually around 2min ahead of the pace group for a good few miles.

Started to struggle from mile 20 and lost the pace group at mile 23.

Had I stuck to my original plan and kept on pace I would have finished under 3:30, it was a silly mistake to make.

Still happy enough with the time as previous PB was 3:41.

Right... Now that the dust has settled on Dublin, where the hell is Stook? Google maps tells me it's in Cork, Tipperary, Canada or Australia. Which is it?
Looking forward to this one, but only doing it for the craic. No racing for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭FrClintPower

It's the hill to the south-east of Dungarvan, Co Kilkenny. On Google Maps you'll see a place called Scart in that direction, and that's the road down from the top of the hill.

I'd been hoping to be back from injury in time for this, but it's 12 weeks now and no sign of getting back running, so maybe next year!

Hey KC - it's few minutes from J7 on the M9 - so about 70 minutes from the M50. Come off the M9, go straight through Gowran (4 miles) and on to Dungarvan village (another 4 miles). I'll post parking and route maps next week.

After the great success of lasts year’s race, the Stook 10 returns this year bigger and better than ever.

The race starts and finishes in Dungarvan near Gowran in Co. Kilkenny and is nearly 3 weeks after DCM so perfect for a post marathon blow out!

Entry is only 20 euro (25 for entry on the day if limit is not reached) and one can register online here http://www.runireland.com/active/all-events by searching for stook.

The course meanders around the Kilkenny countryside and once you peak at the famous stook there is a rapid and speedy downhill all the way to the finish.

There is also a Stook Beag 5k race where entry is only 10 euro for adults / 5 euro for U12s for an ideal family day out.

I’ll even give you a personal welcome and there will be a great spread afterwards. You might be lucky enough to get your hands on blockic’s chocolate brownies. Famous around these parts! ;)

Asimonov and I will be heavily involved in this one so we’re here to answer any questions you might have.

We hope to welcome you on the day. :)

Is this course a PB course?? Or is it very hilly? Apologies if this has already been discussed. Also can you register on the morning of the race?

This is a map of the course http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/fullscreen/113701837/

I can't seem to bring up the elevation but think there is longish hill from 7-8 mile and then it's downhill from there.

Hi SB5, It depends how soft your 10 mile PB is? ;)

It is pretty level up to 6 miles and then there is an incline from 6-8 (known as Stook hill) and then a rapid 2 mile downhill finish.

We see it as a good blow out after Dublin and a tactical challenge, something different than the usual flat courses. Do you even pace it, or save something for the hill, that is the question?

Yes you can register online now for €20 or €25 on the morning of the race.

Great....PB for 10miler is 69mins but that was two years ago so I would be looking to trash that now! ...by a minute or two anyway.

Doing the Waterford half marathon two weeks later though.....what are people's views on a 10miler two weeks before a half?

You'd know your body best and how quick you recover but I'd see no issue with it if it was me.

An easy day for every mile raced is usually the guideline so would take about 7-10 easy running days to recover fully if you went all out. Waterford would fit in nicely a few days after that.

Thanks blockic...unfortunately I am quite prone to injury, was out for nearly a year with so many injuries.... I would like to do this race though so I think the best option is to wait and see what shape I'm in the day before stook and sign up on the morning...if it's not sold out!

Great race -- BUT it is a bit of a understatement to describe the STOOK HILL as an incline :eek:.....

Oh it's a hill alright, which was said in brackets afterwards, was too lazy to backspace to change incline!

Out on the route this morning doing the markings, took this snap in the process which is a great view right at the start of the flying mile where you can turn on the after burners!

So the cowbells are here, and in two weeks time, you ten milers will have one of these beauties! We love the colour this year, we hope you do too!

There is a pre-registration tomorrow night for Kilkenny locals to register in the Watershed, Loughboy at 7:30pm, might see some of you there!
