I've done the rounds of the insurers looking for a better quote than my current renewal offer. The following are the cheapest so far:
    Zurich €497 (Current Insurer)
    Aviva €420
    AIG €350

All are for comprehensive with Full NCB Protection.

I just took up a policy with them there last week as they were offering the best cover at the cheapest price including breakdown assist, accidental damage, full NCB protection, etc. Verified that my policy was activated but they seem to be slow sending out the disc and cert.

No experience of dealing with them around claims yet though.

Went with AIG directly this year. Nearly 1/2 saved compared to the broken quote from them.

AIG are grand. Were called Chartis before, and AIG before that!

Thanks. Interesting about the breakdown assist, it was missing from my quote.

EDIT: EUR 10 extra. Not a worry.

I've been insured with AIG in the past and had to settle a claim, all went very smoothly.

    Aren't/weren't AIG goosed financially?

    Aren't/weren't AIG goosed financially?

They were, partially thanks to some insurance products they sold to John Paulson among others.
Us government stepped I'm and bailed them out.
They wouldn't be allowed underwrite insurance in this country if they were still goosed b

Same here, a pleasure to deal with actually and all done and dusted within 4 days!

Have been with them since the switch as was previously with Chartis and have also renewed this year.

Only problem i have is that they sponsor Utd. :(

PMPA, I.C.I., and others I'm sure went pop money wise.

We're still paying for them btw.

AIG won't insure my fianceé on an Aussie licence. She has to switch over to Irish before they will deal with us. Need to weigh that up. Aviva is 50 euro more expensive.

Should she not be moving onto an Irish licence anyway ?

Proper order. She and Barbie might be making prawn sandwiches with Sheila.

Technically, yes. But she's less than enamored with the state of our licenses.

    Same as that.

Policy taken out last Friday week, (13 days ago) all outstanding docs (proof of NCB etc emailed in on last Monday week. No sign on Cert and disc. Old policy is up on Monday next. If it's not in tomorrows post I'll be cancelling. There wasn't that much difference between them and the next best priced for the same thing.

Not overly concerned about the cert and disc being slow coming out but definitely concerned that this lack of efficiency is the way it'll be going forward.

    Whats wrong with our licences?

Are the others happy to accept her on an Oz licence?

I've spoke to quite a few insurers today, and a few too many of them were a cross between Napoleon Dynamite and Ross O'Carroll Kelly. I won't name names, but it didn't breathe confidence. My usual brokers are excellent and this is one of the reasons I have opted to pay a little extra to stay with them.

Another vote for AIG here. Beat my renewal (from Aviva) by nearly 200.
Beat every other quote I got but when I called they still knocked another 5% off it.

Done and dusted in a couple of days.
AFAIK AIG outsource the actual organisation of the documentation etc in Ireland, but my experience has been all good anyway.
Needed to arrange temp cover last week and it was painless as well as free.

    OK an update on this......

Tried to phone the call centre yesterday evening, message that they close at 5!

Tried the call centre today, on hold for 10 mins then came a recorded message that I could leave my number and they'd ring me back. Still waiting for that.

Also sent an email on Wednesday (they suggest email as one of their contact methods) no reply.

Sent an email around noon today, no reply.

Now, what's bothering me is..... if I want to change insurance to another car, am I going to be days trying to get it sorted. Also, if this is what it's like at this stage, in the unfortunate event of having a claim, what kind of response are AIG going to give?

I will admit they were cheaper than the alternatives but the way they are behaving now is leaving me very nervy.

As of today I still haven't received my disc or cert despite being reassured on Monday they were processed and on the way. Doesn't sound like a very efficient setup, so far.

Based on your recommendation, I got a quote. For the same car & cover they are €65 / annum dearer than my current insurers. If I drop the NCB step-back, strangely I lose glass-cover, but still end up with a premium €25 / annum dearer but with reduced cover.

I assume they are using risk profiling to go after a certain target market, for whatever reasons.
My cover was identical, and that quote factored in the added no claims protection and breakdown cover which was not standard.
YMMV but just because they weren't cheaper this year doesn't mean it's not worth a call again next year. I call or get an online quote from at least 10-15 provides ever year, and without fail a different one is best value each time.

Got a new car recently and my current insurer ( Kenco ) sent out renewal papers for €630. AIG came in at €482 for a better range of cover. Previously, I just took the brokers word that what was offered was the best deal. I will be renewing with AIG for sure. Thanks OP

I hope your not in a hurry for the disc and cert. I'm still waiting on mine despite taking up the policy over a week ago, not a very efficient service so far. I can see now why were in difficulty.

I paid with credit card and I emailed a scan of my licence and no claims cert. Had the insurance cert back in the post within 3 working days.

    Aren't/weren't AIG goosed financially?

They finish paying back the US government this year, and are well recovered financially.
