For normal users the number of stars varies by post count. Not sure of the exact values but I know you go from 3 to 4 when you hit 10,000 posts.

The number of stars beneath your name are an indication of the number of posts you have. As far as I can remember it's something like:

1 star 1-100 posts
2 stars 101-1,000 posts
3 stars 1,001-10,000 posts
4 stars 10,001+ posts
