Anyone suggest some good snow films?

Always start watching them a lot at this time of the year but need something new. Doesn't necessarily have to be a Red Bull/GoPro epic... but I'll still watch one.:D

You can take it I've seen 'Art of Flight' too many times...

    Suggestions?

    Hey Cardinal J

Here's a full list of films with the music that is played in each one.
    http://www.ridertunes.com/

    Anything from Absinthe Films

One that i always go back too is 'Picture This - Mack Dawg Productions', cracking soundtrack and an epic night superpipe scene with Shaun White and Kevin Pearce.

Sensational answers there. Will be all over ridertunes for the next while.

I should have put this up. 'Into the Mind' - out in the next few weeks.

I love any film where you have some sort of ski/board bum saying stuff like "Sometimes I feel like I'm a snow flake", or similar. Laugh so hard but love it.

Set up an account on Vimeo, then set up a feed with your favoured tag (ie. snowboard, ski ) every day you log in there will be a dozen or so (fairly) high-quality videos. It's an excellent source of amateur and professional material and has kept me a nightly visitor to the site for the past two years or so.

Most of the MDP snowboard videos are great: Double Decade is very good.

I really like the Think Thank movies, you'll either love them or hate them.
They are very very technical, a completely different aspect of snowboarding than other movies.
Here's an old clip of Scott Steven's from a 2007 Think Thank movie.

Another vote for Double Decade, mightn't have the multiple heli cams and hd slow mo's in the the likes of Art of Flight etc but its a good, easy to watch film with a great soundtrack

If you haven't seen "The Art of Flight" yet get on it! Best snowboarding movie ever! Backed by red bull so you know its gonna be unreal!

Jeremy Jones "Deeper" and "Further" are both epic and feature some of the most badass runs you are likely to see

Jake Blauvelt "Naturally" is going to be free to view on Transworld Snowboaring for free from Monday onwards have been looking forward to that for a while now!

Downloaded 'Into the Mind' the other evening. Some really cool bits, but a little all over the place. Worth a watch.

Jake Blauvelt's "Naturally" is the featured movie on Transworld Snowboarding this week and is free to watch until Friday! Watched it earlier and it was awesome!!

First Descent is a good back-country movie for about an hour, and then 7601 happens. Unreal stuff.

Still think The Art Of Flight is the pinnacle. Some great boarding, some really epic shots, and a killer soundtrack

Different sort of movie, but I came across "The Crash Reel" recently, about the fall and rise of Kevin Pearce. Interesting, frustrating and fascinating in equal parts.

"We Ride: The Story Of Snowboarding" is available in full on youtube. Good watch as well

Incredible story really, very brave guy. His father is actually from Kilkenny.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9siUCUzANsU this video is of him back on his board. for the first time in the two years since his accident. Even when he gets lost in the crowd at the end of the clip you can pick him out by looking for the boarder with the most style.

Forgot about this... only out a short while but a quality watch and an awesome soundtrack! "Go Boardin'"

Nike's "Never Not 2" is available to watch for free for the next 72 hours! Epic is an understatement! For anyone who wants to see about the struggle, pay off, pain and psychology of Professional Snowboarding its well worth a look and features some of my favourite riders (Nico Muller, Gigi Ruf)

Lets not get into that discussion.... :p

Muller is a technical genius though! I don't think anyone impresses me as much, he is also off his head if you ever listen to the way he talks about boarding, he genuinely loves it and that makes me like him even more!

Yea his speaking bits in ''art of flight' actually made me scream at the screen. Hahaha "Snowboarding is more that religion", or something like that.

I think my favourite would be Torstein Horgmo, not just for his skill but he also seems to have a great sense of humour, have a look at his Vimeo, or YouTube, channel to see what I mean.

Elias Elhardt also gets a vote for his ability to land, and survive, some of the jumps he does.

This is one of my favourite videos though - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEjLkOUJ4lM - they're not professionals doing jumps or anything, it's a gang of guys having a great time cruising on their boards, it gets good from about 3.15 on.

Can't wait for this Jeremy Jones is a badass! Balls of steel! I'd love to get out into the real back country to do some boarding some time, apparently it's like learning all over again though learning to ride waist deep pow! Hoping to do a season in Canada next year so maybe then... untill then i'll just have to settle for groomers and hazardous off piste runs :pac:

'Into the mind' is a real nice film. Sherpa Cinema who made it put this up on their you tube channel earlier today.

'All I Can' was the file before 'Into the Mind' and had a similar scene.

    Two good films.

Just watched the crash reel tonight, really good documentary! Wont lie got a bit chocked up at one point, also some really scary crash shots from across the extreme sports world! Those guys out there really pushing the sports are fúcking insane to be polite! If i can dial down a 360 and a couple of grabs by the time i get to old to board ill be a happy man! It seems you're nobody unless you throw a triple in the x-games anymore!

Hardly, the amount of work that goes in to these tricks off the hill in amazing, hours on the trampoline, days in the Barn at Copper Woodward (Google it) and the tricks are done in parts and built up. I watch the current world slope-style champion training a few seasons back putting his tricks together.

The are really top level athletes pushing the limits of what can be done.

I still don't think that matters, surely the whole message of The crash reel is that no matter how much practice goes into these tricks off the hill people still seriously end up fucking themselves up big time performing them?

There was one scene where a dude backflips on a snowmobile only for it to go wrong and slam down on top of him! Horrible to see, how can you say that is not insane! All of those x-game dudes are mad bastards as far as i'm concerned! You said the same as me, these guys are really pushing their respective sports and ultimately it can come a t a price, how many dudes have lost their lives out riding in the back country or ended up paralysed or with brain injuries from performing big air tricks?

On a side note i just watched First descent again and it has me pumped for going away! Love this time of year and the build up to a trip! 2 weeks this time, should be sweet! Seems to dumping all over Europe at the moment!

Most of the research out there still shows the majority of injuries occur outside if the park and on Piste. In Europe mostly on beginner home runs. In N.America the same but with less concentration on any particular piste. Back country injuries are predominantly minor breaks and death by avalanche. That said it will probably take another 10 years of research to show what is really going on as Park skiing has only really become main stream in the last 3-5 years & the numbers going off piste & back country has shot up recently with the technological developments in ski kit personally I made a call about going upside down 2 years ago and decided it was not worth it anymore, I have done it a couple of times since but I don't see too many backflips in my future

In Canada alone in the past 3 seasons there has been a big increase in piste injuries and collisions and a decrease in park ones

Yep the park guys take a beating much like Rugby players are more likely to suffer an injury than soccer players it is the nature of what they do.

I have skied with & known Woodsy since he is 16 (slopestyle world champion) he is one if the most normal, calm and focused, every trick is calculated and precise with little it no risk, to the point that on the dew tour last year he pulled up on a jump as he felt the breeze was making his airs impossible.

I am around these guys a lot & the only one of these guys I have meet and skied with were I thought they were insane was Kai Zakerson!

Totally agree with the snowmobile thing though!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,094 ✭✭✭SpaceCowb0y

I agree a lot with what you're saying! And completely agree with the rise in back country skiing/snowboaridng on the up although unless you live near a resort its hard to get to do much! The most i've ever done is some half decent off piste runs that take you a bit out of the groomer boundaries, most of these are quite sketchy though with tree stumps and **** all over the place, nearly took myself out flying through the air and landed right beside a stump!

That said im not denying most of these guys are probably extremely down to earth and calm but i look at the likes of Jeremy Jones as being so chilled out and laid back yet the lines that guy rides are nuts! Im sure there are plenty of normal people who hold down steady nine to fives but like to base jump in their free time... to me that is insane! The risk involved makes it mental in my eyes! Even with all the airbag practice etc a slight error and you are in trouble! I just seen a clip on white lines magazine of some freestyle pro boarder who hit a rail wrong and ended up impaling himself on it! You could actually see a huge chunk of meat from his back hanging to the rail!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

Some great options out there for backcountry stuff, I think you are a boarder so Definition snowboarding do some excellent courses, Also every Saturday St Anton ski club do a powder guide for ski and board it is €10-15 quid for a full days powder guiding and all the relevant kit.! At least you appear to be somewhat sensible about it ;) The amount of people who are not is scary!

Base Jumping, were if you only make a mistake once as you are too dead to make it again! I have to say it is probably the most extreme thing I have ever seen really no room for error at all.

St Anton sounds good, friends of mine were there a coupe of years ago and said the slopes were great, said the Aprés wasn't the best though! This is someting i've been looking at recently

    http://www.theridersocial.com/splitboard-holidays-in-chatel/

Looks somewhat similar to the Definition snowboarding but quite cheaper! £1900 sterling is quite pricey for 1 week!

Their freestyle courses look good though!

said the Aprés wasn't the best though!

Are your mates, blind, deaf or hermits? Youtube both the crazyKangaroo and the Moosweirt!! You will get the idea!

Yeah Definition is at the top end of the market, Gav (Owner) is a top lad with more experience than you can shake a stick at and his courses really deliver both on the ski and board side.

That link looks excellent and the Portes Du Soleil is pretty sweet, Chatel is a hidden off piste gem on a powder day, I will be in Champery late Jan for a few days.

Slightly off topic but St Anton has easily the best Apres ski Ive experienced.

I'd love to try split boarding but all depends on what way funds pan out whether I'll get to go this winter or not. In the meantime I'll have to make do with watching Jeremy Jones and co.

Watched The Crash Reel last night, tough watch. Shows a bad side to Shaun White too imo, Tiger Woods/Lance Armstrong personality type!!

All I Can and The Art of Flight or two must see's. Jones Further/Deeper also good watch.

Finally got around to watching McConkey tonight. Really enjoyed it. Felt a bit better about it all afterwards - I got it into my head that he only got involved in doing stunts because he needed to keep himself relevant, and this was the only way he could get money. But he was obviously just an adrenaline sick junkie from the off and absolutely loved his life.

Still makes me so sad to think of his daughter growing up without him. If someone dies in an avalanche doing what they love, then so be it, if someone dies throwing themselves off a cliff in a zero sum game with no margin for error, just for the sake of doing something involving risk (the line he was skiing wasn't in any way aesthetic) it just begins to seem so futile.

Still, the guy is a complete legend.

Few words is next, then the Crash Reel.

a148pro; Every time I stand on my skis i thank him for pushing the limits of technology and ski design, I truly believe if more people took his attitude to skiing and life the world would be a much better place!

Its about pushing yourself and having fun with friends, not being better than others. !
