Try going somewhere with trees to start with. We have plenty of autumnal leaves around my way.

My folks have a maple tree in the front garden. The leaves are lovely - until they all fall off come winter and the garden is a giant sea of red, leafy decay.

I've been in the local forest and there is no sign to of the leaves changing colour.

I have seen some while driving around but not much.

Are the leaves bigger in America?

most forest in Ireland are coniferous pine, parklands will have older more native trees. I'm surrounded by parkland on all sides and I have to wade through crunchy leaves daily during Autumn. (I also have an Ash a Maple and a Birch in my own garden)

yeah it's ironic, despite it's reputation for being green, Ireland is one of the most deforested countries in Europe.

The leaves have a high lipid diet over there.

I think you'll find that generally refers to the amount of land still under pasture, nothing to do with tree cover.

Yeah, the autumn colours are far more dramatic in the US, people go out of their way to see the beautiful colours in New England and thereabouts.
I read something about this before, can't remember the full details but it's to do with the weather.

Their seasons are far more clear-cut over there - you get a solid few months of hot summer weather, then a quick drop in temperature for a few months for autumn, which then becomes a proper freezing cold winter, etc.

This affects how the trees react; they all withdraw their chlorophyll levels (what gives leaves their green colour) at the same time, giving that stunning autumn foliage.

Meanwhile our trees kind of dawdle along, with different trees changing colours at different times, as our climate is so temperate and changeable. So we get nice colours too but nowhere near the same as in America.

Killarney National park is good for this during autumn has not started yet though. As long as we do not get high winds and rain when the start going brown they tend to stick around.

Autumn is my favourite time of year. I spent few weeks in New England in October 2011. Lovely little towns, picket fences, hot drinks and great autumn colours.

My Lonely Planet guide said there were hotlines people could call to find out where the best foliage was. A bit extreme!

We do get nice autumn colours in Ireland as well but it's a bit early yet.

It is very big over there for people to travel just to see the leaves change colour
