Who's Adrian Kennedy? What kind of talk show will this be?

Well this story wasn't set boards.ie on fire. Not a good sign for them

This will have to be different to the regular night time slot he's been used to, he won't have as many half-cut drongos phoning in at that hour.

Joe Duffy gets his fair allocation and he is on during the day.

Can't see them going down well on daytime radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

They'll have to cut out 90%+ of their usual fare on daytime, which kind of defeats the purpose. They also strike me as a one trick pony type pair who will struggle to adapt if they (Dixon in particular) can't be crude just for the sake of it. Bizarre move from both sides.

Thought they would have a job for life at FM104 but I guess they are now somewhat aging out now.

    Oh. :(

As muck as the show sometimes is, it's hilarious to listen to other times. :pac:

And if Joe is too highbrow, you have the David Harvey Casual Racism Hour.

Adrian presented a mid morning show on East Coast before he went to FM104

He will be very capable of changing gears back to a more civilised show again.

Why would 98FM want a more civilised show?

Do you not think they will be looking for something more civilised than the moronic nonsense which pollutes the air on his night-time show

Why sign them then? Kennedy on East Coast was doing what Declan Meehan is doing now. Talking to local councillors about potholes, fly tipping and fun days and so on. Is this really the way back for 98FM from ratings annihilation.

And more to the point its got the lead in from Foley.

Whatever show they do, they won't have the same content as the late night show. They wouldn't get away with the language, tone or content which is used late night.

It could be a good move for 98FM. If they make a topical Dublin based controversial show, it might get an audience.

95% of their audience are out of their heads by midday anyway

    Here's confirmation anyway. http://radionation.ie/2013/09/adrian-jeremy-jump-ship-98fm/

I rarely listened to The Phoneshow, and if I did, it wouldn't have been for long at all. It will be interesting to see how they go down on 98fm. It's an unusual move, in my opinion, and it's a new move for 98fm to have the mid morning talk show. I think it's a first for them anyway. I wonder will Jude and co follow suit?

If this ends the era of "Halloween shows where we make our own noises" I'll be a sad panda. One of the highlights of a late night drive home from Dublin was hearing Deco reporting a UFO over Tallaght and an eventual pursuit of of extra-terrestrial via phone in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,683 ✭✭✭DebDynamite

Will the typical day-time 98fm listener want talk radio? I know when we’re in the office, we just want to listen to music, as we can dip in and out between phone calls, meetings/discussions, etc.

This is an awful move, IMO.
As bad as the phoneshow could get, at least it was frank and honest.
It's going to be so tame now and I doubt it'll get as many listeners.

FM104 now have a huge headache. No matter what way you paint this losing Kennedy and 46k listeners on an average night is an enormous dent in the 104 schedule. As far as I'm aware they need to fulfill their talk quota according to the remit of their license which means replacing Kennedy with another host or moving their 'talk' show to another time in the day which will massively upset the rest of their schedule.

Whether you love what he does or loathe it Kennedy is the King of talk in Dublin and he will bring listeners with him. No matter what way you look at this FM104 will lose listeners now in the evening and I think from the rest of their schedule because some listeners will simply move to 98 for kennedy and stay there for the rest of the day. Question is how many ?

Are we looking at the beginning of the end of 104's domination of the Dublin airwaves ?

Im sure they can keep 80% of the audience with a suitable replacement. There must be loads of presenters who fancy the gig.

Might they gain more day-time listeners though from workers in offices, factories, garages, etc who don’t fancy talk-radio while they work?

I know from where I work, we might switch over to 104fm when the move happens.

98FM need to make this work in there favor, they should work on getting there Late Night Talk show up to speed and bring in the numbers.

But one thing that will always stand to me is the location on the band 98.1 there is no big commercial CHR station beside them unlike, FM104 on 104.4 and Spin 1038 on 103.8.

I dunno about everyone else but there is a serious lack of music in the mornings and drive home. Radio in general is lacking not just certain stations.

I wonder who will replace them on 104...could it be Niall Boylan? Greg Merriman?
    Mike Hogan?
104 like seamless transitions so that format will remain exactly the same, so they will need presteders who can do the funny stuff at the start and cover the edgy topics the the phones how style. This will be a big strategic decision for 104 management and they will need too get it right or face loosing night time and subsequently loosing morning listeners (go to bed with 104 and wake up with them). They could also loose the word of mouth the phone show creates for the station, I would suspect this could have the biggest impact.

In the past they had some chap from Red FM cover when both Adrian and Jeremy were off. Not sure whether they'd want a Cork jock as a permanent host.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,089 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

98FM must have offered them a lot of money or else Adrian fell out with FM104 management? It's a surprise anyway.

I always saw 98FM as the more cleaner station compared with FM104, so it's a surprise they're going there.

Genuinely sad at this annoucement. While many viewed FM104 at night as crap, gutter radio, 9pm to 10.30 was light entertainment after a long day and something handy to listen to after having the likes of Beat on all day. I think personally it's a backwards move for AK/JD, their style won't fit at all during the day and all the controversial stuff will have to go, no more filth and it'll be hard to adapt.

Hopefully the new presenters will be as good but it's a very hard act to follow

Two hour show in the middle of the day compared to finishing up after midnight, I reckon you must get to the stage where enough is enough and getting your evenings back is an incentive. After a decade or more of unsociable hours I'd be looking for normality.

That could be a factor, and maybe FM104 wouldn't grant them a daytime slot. I'd say there's other reasons behind the move, there always is!

I am going to miss the totally mad, random conversations the show seemed to constantly generate. It was always funny to listen to and the odd time, it generated robust and interesting debates between people that are ignored by the media.

Im really disappointed by this. I cant see this working at all. Im not underestimating kennedy's ability of producing quality daytime radio discussion but i can't see how 104 could fill the void left by AK/JD when the move to 98. They suit the phoneshow and their personalities (however fabricated) complement each other. The phoneshow really had it's memorable moments and I will really miss the halloween specials. I'll miss it. Their facebook page has been deleted by the way.

Headache for 98 ! - This is a massive gamble - I am not to sure what audience they are trying to attract with a chat show midmorning on a CHR Dublin station ?

For FM104 - they have to replace a presenter on an evening show - considering that replacing the presenters on the strawberry alarm clock proved easy enough - I don't see this being a major issue.

Will they lose listeners ? probably - with 98 now likely to be talk free in the evenings - however will they care ?

Daytime gains will make up for evening time loses .

You could switch over to 98 and stay there most of the day but with that automated ****house that is "The Ryan Seacrest Show" on at 7 and a talk show no one seems to listen to then I don't see the desire to stay listening beyond 7.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,309 ✭✭✭giftgrub

I dont think listeners are all that loyal to anyone. They'll lose some sure but they predicted the end of 104 when Colm and Jim left for 2fm....its all about the brand, not the personality

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭redtapestyl

Notice they are conveniently avoiding the issue on tonight's show!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,330 ✭✭✭Gran Hermano

I reckon they'll pitch for a different audience than newstalk. Something light hearted probably comparable to what Gerry Ryan aimed for at his peak. Tom Dunne and Colm Hayes weren't exactly great in winning over the listeners in the morning talk slot, it'll be interesting to see how they get on.

FM104 got over the departure of Chris Barry from the very same slot when he also deflected to 98FM,and I remember a similar uproar at the time, and look how that turned out.
Im sure 104 will be fine, after all its other stations that seem to keep pinching their presenters, indicating whatever screening process they use for potential new employees seems to be working.
