What does the word 'slut' mean to you?

It's a word that's being used a lot lately. What do you take it to mean?

The dictionary says it's 'a person, especially a woman, considered sexually promiscuous.' I'll go along with that until the dictionary is updated.

For me the only diff between what may be an interestingly varied sex life and a "slut" (male or female), rather someone that may be considered such by society, is discretion. That's about it.

While this is true, it misses the point.

The real question is - should there be any negative connotations with either term?

Or should the term be re-appropriated to people who are promiscuous but also don't use protection. So the "dirty" connotations of the word "slut" would be more relevant. Because there's nothing inherently dirty or wrong about sex, regardless how often you're having it or who (so long as they're consenting) you're having it with.

Ultimately it's down to evolution. Men liked to have control of "their" women's sexuality - it increased the probability that they wouldn't raise offspring who weren't thier own.
Sex isn't inexorably linked to procreation any more so that's no longer relevant and, as such, looking down on people who are sexually active is nonsensical.

Discretion almost implies something wrong with it though doesn't it?

Often blokes will talk about the amount of women they ride whereas women keep shtum. I don't personally agree with it but it's obvious that society treats these things with a certain amount of contempt.

Because as you note society does look down on it*. Lots of different and often complex reasons for it. As Gbear said there is quite the bit or reproductive evolutionary thought behind it. IE a woman always knows she's the mother of a child, a man couldn't be sure. Today he could be with DNA testing, but look how many come out against that when it's suggested and often it's mostly women too.

I'd personally feel discretion is a given for both genders. I don't like hearing men go on about their "conquests" in detail.

Christ, I didn't think it was that bad. I haven't overheard it on the streets myself but then again I don't tend to listen to what people are saying there either because I have my mind on other things. I usually only hear it when I'm having a chat with people. I encounter it a lot on Facebook and Twitter too.
