hard drive connection problem

    (for simplicity 500gb drive: a 1tb: b)

After recently cloning a partition from drive a to drive b
and formatting drive a via a usb connector, my computer doesn't recognise it when plugged in via sata cable (tried a few cables and ports). what's more is that when it's plugged in and the computer reboots, it doesn't get past post, doesn't allow me to access the bios menu.

I've tried another drive on the same sata cable and ports and it seems to connect.

Does anyone here have an idea of what might be causing the problem?
