    Just like the title suggests.

    For example.
Nicholas Lyndhurst or Rodney. Somehow when he is acting in Good Night Sweetheart I kept thinking Rodney and went off the program.
Saw where he is to be in New Tricks and again thought to myself Rodney.

Another is Ardel O Hanlon when he was in My Hero, just kept thinking hey that's Fr Dougal.

Both parts were probably consumed by their previous successes in another show.

Any more that spring to mind?

Anyone in a long-running TV show is gonna find it hard to break away from that character.
Everyone in Friends, Frasier, Seinfeld, etc.

To be honest I think of David Duchovny as Hank Moody more quickly, because I was never really into The X Files.

    Neil Flynn - Janitor

Maybe an expection to the rule..but Friends star Matthew Perry's new show Go On is quite good. He plays a fairly strong character in it, the last name that would come to mind is Chandler Bing.

Miley was hugely known in theatre circles more as Mick Lally than Miley.. but now that you say it " is there anythin stirring?"

Looking back now and I know it preceded Only Fools but when I see a young David Jason playing a shopboy in Open All Hours I think Del Boy. Even still when he did the voice for Duckla in the mid 90s, a staple of my childhood. 'That's Del' as my Dad would say when we watched the VHS together.

I actually think David Jason achieved it in A Touch of Frost.

Sharon stone as the damaged homicidal temptress sans underwear in Basic Instinct.

Stallone will always be Rocky to me.

Hilary Swank playing a boy (is it Boys Don't Cry?)

    Al Pacino playing Michael Corleone.

I think it's testament to what amazing actors Kate & Leo are that they managed to shake off their Titanic characters.

    Charleze Theron in Monster.

Steve Coogan will always be Alan Partridge no matter what he does.

Early in his career, Harry H. Corbett was considered one of the finest young actors in Britain, with a very bright future ahead of him.

A 12-year stint as Harold Steptoe brought fame & success, but the price paid was that audiences, critics & casting agents never took him seriously again.

I think actors can have a life beyond their calling-card role.
For me, Gillian Anderson will always be the woman who wore boring trouser suits in The X Files - but in recent years, she's carved out a bit of a niche on this side of the Atlantic.
There was Tristram Shandy, I think she was Miss Havisham in some BBC version of Great Expectations, and then this year she was in that crime drama The Fall, which was made in the North.
Obviously, she'll never get a role as life-changing as Scully ever again, but she must be respected as an actor, or she simply wouldn't be working.

i always found it hard to watch James Gandolfini in any role other than Tony Soprano.

Jason statham, Vin Diesel and those other identikit action hero wasters.

Not exactly a character, but a genre.

As for characters, that guy who made the sounds for Police Academy.

They've all had hugely successful careers in some great films outside of those roles. I think all of them have long broken clear of those films with the possible exception of Stallone (who has had massive success outside of Rocky also).

Johnny Depp, playing the same character in every film.

Jack Gleeson who plays Joffrey in Game of Thrones. He's so young, but he's embodied the role so brilliantly that I think he'll find it hard to shake it for a number of years. There are rumours that he's planning on quitting acting altogether because he gets so much abuse on the street from morons. Which would be a fncking shame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

I think people are missing the difference between an actor/actress that has a role that consumes their careers (Ardal O'Hanlon) and an actor/actress that has a certain role the poster associates them with.

I heard he wants to quit to pursue a career in academia. That was a while back though.

Everytime I see the guy who played Tony Blair in the queen I still think its him, he just can't escape it.

Pity beside he has done some great drama.

Scott Bakula will always be Dr Sam Beckett to me.

Same goes for the cast of any Star Trek series with the exception of Enterprise of course, 'cause Sam Beckett was the captain on Enterprise

Those are her kids with Judd Apatow, hence the prevalence!
She's also a good actress and hot; I feel that's worth mentioning.
