Yep, its an American gas guzzler. The guy who runs Harley Davidson in Ballymount had one for a while but it was too costly to run. Check out on Fuelly http://www.fuelly.com/car/ford/mustang

Is that imperial gallon or us gallon?

Could you put in a smaller engine 2l or somthing

Not sure but if it is US then it converts to about 24mpg imperial.

Cena a 2l engine would probably be worse as it is a big heavy car and would need to rev it to get it to move anywhere. A much better option would be an LPG conversion.

I dunno what the tax is on new Mustangs either but you might want to check that out if you are worried about running costs.

Unfortunately if you want speed you gotta somewhat pay for it.

Or you could just buy a motorbike :D

But don't just go for 1 car, there are plenty of cars about that are very fast and not necessarily expensive to run.

I had one for a while while I was in the US. Very disappointing car. Looks great but the performance was really poor. The acceleration in particular was bad and took an age to get up to any decent speed from a standing start.

    Does look great though

From a mustang, to a 2L swap, to a diesel in a half hour.

How about you give a budget and some sort of idea of what you want.

Was that the V6 though? The supercharged Shelby V8 GT500 is supposed to be the dog's balls. I'd buy it just for the soundtrack.

If inwas to buy one I wouldn't be changing the engine. I was just saying if some one wanted one and wanted to save money they could out a smaller engine in.

What are you looking for in terms of style/practicality

For instance my not so fancy looking Volvo S80 is a 2.0 Turbo and has 180 hp (new) it is as fast as you need it, quick take off and plenty of grunt for over talking and I average 30 mpg. It had heated seats, cruise control, traction control and is damm comfy.

I had a 520i Auto which is 170hp and again and no trouble overtaking or pulling away.

Nissan Maxima is a 2.0 V6 and as above is no slow car yet big and comfy.

You need to decide how fast you actually need to go, if you want to go like 160 well a bike is you best bet, even an old 750 will top 160 mph but if your looking for something with decent mpg and power to overtake etc well the likes of the 5 series, S80, CLK etc are in the range and very cheap to buy.

how about the Subaru legacy or forester/outback? 2.5 Turbo and again quick enough.

Its great having a mustang or a 911 etc but remember once your over 100mph you chance losing your licence or life :D so decide exactly what you need and why

Somebody in the market for a muscle car like a Mustang is not going to be that concerned about saving a few quid on fuel.

Why not throw in a 1.9 TDI vag engine
Sure the torque would be even more than the existing mustang engine :P

Dont forget the coo. Gotta have some coo with a 1.9 tdi Ford Mustang!

    Go the opposite!

Get a mustang engine and stick it in an old passat :D

cena, you are asking some incredibly stupid "hypothetical" questions that sound like something a 15 year old child dreaming about his first car would ask.

Are you aware that mustangs are only produced for the US market? .. As such they are Left hand drive only?

Asking whether "mustangs are heavy on fuel" is like asking how long is a piece of string! ... how do you define heavy on fuel? which model of mustang are you talking about? which engine? V6 ? V8? Supercharged? .. it's all relative! ... It's like asking "is pizza tasty?" ... most people will answer yes some would answer no, but there are many variables and contributing factors!

Thirdly, swapping a 2.0 litre engine into one would not be cost effective if you are looking to "save money" as the conversion would be so complex and so expensive that youd be better off sticking with whatever engine is in it! .... if you are "saving money on petrol" is your main priority , why on earth would you be looking at Mustangs?? - although i'm sure you're only day dreaming!

And lastly, anyone that would genuinely be interested in importing a mustang would be an enthusiast who would use it as a weekend car to whom the idea of swapping a 2litre engine into it would be sacrilege!

Soo... Besides the 1.9tdi transplant, we need to think of a car here with a dash and rack that would be a reasonably close fit to a Mustang...
    02 Xsara Picasso?

IMO all american cars are useless in Europe and especially in Ireland. (I'm talking about "classic" american cars, not about Ford Fiesta and so).

They are designed for freeways: they are big, heavy and not very good at turns. I would never want to drive one of them on fun, curvy & narrow Irish roads.

They also dont have to pay up to 2500 a year to tax them or around 70cent in every litre of fuel in fuel tax:(

Very true. American cars are massive compared to what we drive and would be totally unsuited to our little roads. Some of them would almost be too powerful in a wee Country where if you put your foot down you could end up in the sea. :P

I did see a Ford F-150, a Toyota Tundra (not American per se but built for the US market) and a Dodge Ram this Summer though and they do look class. There's no doubt American muscle looks great. I wouldn't fancy trying to park or fuel them up though!

By the same token, if you put our much smaller cars on their massive highways and byways, they'd almost be swallowed up. And the huge distances covered over there means you wouldn't be long surrendering your Compact after 8 hours of freeway driving and a messed up back, for a nice big boat of a thing or an SUV that would gobble up the miles for breakfast.

Still, I wouldn't mind getting me a V8 Mustang shipped over if I won the LOTTO!

It's fairly pathetic that we here in Europe, Ireland in particular, are pootling around in 1.4 diesel go carts, worrying about tax and emissions and mpg as the cost of motoring gets ever more punitive, all in the name of the environment (apparently) and yet you go to the states and everyone and his granny is driving a 5 ltr v8 truck or a muscle car, you just think what is the feckin point. I don't believe in being needlessly wasteful with resources, but it is a weird situation really

Spot on. There was a guy with a thread yesterday saying he had to surrender his 3 Series Company car for a 1 liter Aygo or something because he just couldn't afford to run it.

It really is a sad situation.

I've driven Mustangs. Theirs not a hope in hell I'd buy one, sh!tty build quality with a crap performance when you take in engine size. Ford have a new 1 litre Fiesta. Good on petrol. BTW my falcon atm Im getting 18.5 litres per 100km.....:o

Right, now don't shoot the messenger but apparently the 2015 Mustang will be available in Europe with a four pot engine. Specifically a 2.3L EcoBoost with 300hp based on the Focus ST. The V6 and V8 will be available also but the 4 cylinder will only be available in Europe.

Supposedly it will be lighter too and to the purists out there, this news of a four cylinder Mustang should almost be good news as I remember reading about the possibility of Ford developing a diesel one for the European market, so at least that's now out the window.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭KwackerJack

    LPG conversion?

What's the long term effect of lpg on a petrol engine?

Do you get the same mpg?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,994 ✭✭✭Taylor365

    Same with Oz.

    Every 2nd car is a v8 Holden or yute/truck/pick-up.

Whats that skip? Want to pay tax and insurance in one go for nothin? Want to pollute outer space?

    Flamin gallah! Get over here!
