First gaming PC build questions

Hello! I have been trying all morning to come up with some parts for my first gaming computer and here is my first go.



I plan on buying most of the parts from Irish suppliers (dabs.ie / komplett.ie).

The problem I'm having is picking out a suitable case / power supply as I have no idea how to judge them adequately. I'm not looking for anything fancy whatsoever, just something that will hold all the parts correctly, keep them powered and sufficiently cooled.

I am open to suggestions and my budget would probably be around €1000. Thanks!

P.S I am not actually buying a DVD drive, I plan on using the bog standard from my old computer!

I'm not familiar with AMD CPU's and mobo's but that mobo seems overpriced to me. I reckon one of the lads can shave a decent bit off the mobo to go towards a better GPU. Did you need windows? Monitor? Peripherals?

You'll most likely get a better deal buying all components from hardwareversand.de apart maybe form a GPU if you can find a good offer somewhere else.

Anyway, no doubt one of the lads will spec you out something nice soon. In the mean time search how low can you go 1080p on this forum and you find something similar to what your looking for.

The reason I chose that motherboard was because it was the first one I found which had a PCI 3.0 channel. The only thing out of the motherboard I want is to have the possibility of adding another graphics card (I kinda planned on getting a high-end card for now and adding another one in a year or two).

For the OS, I can grab a copy of windows 7/8 for free with college.

Also, I have a monitor which will suffice for the moment.

How does this look? Plenty of power there for now with the option of adding a second card in future. Lot's of overclocking potential as well.

What monitor are you using? You could even add a second 7950 and grab a 1440p monitor in a few months.

How are you getting Windows free through college? Dreamspark? 'Cos UL hasn't registered for that, I can't get it free. I'd like Windows 8 soon enough as I'm thinking of getting a Samsung Evo but really don't want to pay 90 euro for it.

Looks good but I have a couple of questions! I did notice benchmarks gave the i5 a higher scoring than the fx-8350 but (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that because current games only make use of 2 or 4 cores? Meaning that future games or patches could make use of 6 / 8? The case, graphics card, ram and PSU look good.

I am also happy to leave out the SSD (and optical drive) but if I have money when order time comes around, I may get the SSD just for the OS. Again, I wouldn't mind spending about €1000 maybe a bit more.

At the moment I have a bog standard Dell monitor from my last computer, max res 1280 x 1024

The 3570k has stronger per core performance, about 25% more, meaning it outperforms the 8350 in most games using 4 cores or less unless they run into gpu limits first. There's still quite a few games, even new releases, that only use 2 cores.

I would say games using 6 cores would bring the 2 cpus pretty much on par in performance depending on how effectively it uses them. Next gen console games will use up to 6 cores.

For the best of both worlds I'd go with the 3570k though. If I was going with the amd I'd get a 6300 as I don't see the extra 2 cores on the 8320/50 making much difference for gaming anytime soon.

You should really upgrade that monitor then. The pc would be a total waste on that. You can always use it as a secondary monitor for the desktop and/or web pages. It's about €125 for a decent 22" 1080p ips panel.

Modified the build to fit a good 22" monitor in. It will have just as much power as the other build only without the option of adding a second card. You won't need dual cards for 1080p anyway. Cut the ssd down to a 64gb which is more than enough for windows and your programs once you optimise the ssd space.
