Whats in fertiliser?

Maybe this is a very stupid question... but I'll ask it anyways... ;)

    Take any compound fertiliser, lets say 18-6-12 - this is 18% N, 6% P and 12% K.

    So that's 36% - whats in the remaining 64% ?

For intensive guys who put out a lot of fertilser - I can see why they would use straights like CAN or Urea, assuming they also use some compounds to top-up the P&K.

But for people who put out minimal fertilser, would it not be more cost effective to always put out compounds? (maybe this is what people do, I don't know?)

I don't use much fertilser (and a soil test has shown that I an very low in P)
I got some 0-16-0, but now I am wondering why I didn't get 18-14-14, as it would seem to be better value for money...
