Anyone know where exactly it happened? (Road/junction)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 756 ✭✭✭smackyB

Junction with Carysfort avenue according to TheJournal. I hate that stretch as there's no cycle lane and people whizz past at dual carriageway speeds despite it being a 50km/h area.

This is terrible news, my hopes and thoughts are with the people involved.

I get absolutely no pleasure in saying this whatsoever but that road was an accident waiting to happen for cyclists. I put no blame on the unfortunate cyclist or driver. This is a poorly planned road, end of story. It makes me very angry that this has happened.

I commute to Dun Laoghaire by bike and have long-since avoided that bypass at all costs. It's essentially a dual-carriageway with no bike lane or hard shoulder.

I'd encourage any cyclists taking this route to change it. Here's an alternative (and it's just as quick, believe me):

Can we step back a bit and wait for actual facts before everyone weighs in with their 2 cents?

Just out of respect to the cyclist and any other road users involved.

I heard about this. I hope the cyclist is alright. It's a bad road.

I saw a car turn left straight into a cyclist at that junction about a year ago, knocked him clean off his bike. The cyclist was alright as the car was going slowly but it's a bad junction and not a good road. Cars fly by and beep at cyclists. I avoid it where possible.

I'm looking out the office window at it now. Road outside the zurich building closed.

Some woman came over looked out and her 1st comment was there are too many cyclists on the road these days, I be cursing them most days, they are all just looking for an accident like this!'

When I told her I was a cyclist and the problem was too many cars and idiot drivers on the road, and she got very defensive and jumped to the 'oh well you're one of them, you all run red lights anyways' ffs I just don't understand some people!

Very unfortunate. I hope the cyclist recovers ok.
I drive that route every day to/from work and it can be tricky trying to avoid cyclists because the road isnt that wide and it’s always very busy with both lanes full. I don't have any problem overtaking cyclists but i can see where
a nervous or learner driver would panic a bit.

Awful, I hope the cyclist is ok. I cycle this road almost every day at this exact time, although I didn't cycle today.

    That's not a bad junction - that's bad driving!

There's a small article in the Indo online about it with a picture of the location. After the first sentence the concerned writer went on to describe the affect it had on traffic.

    + 1

I cycled the dual-carriageway on my first day and have never been back on to it. I have taken your alternative route ever since and it's a lot more pleasant and safe to cycle.

Maybe this lady wasn't going the same direction as our commute but I would strongly encourage anyone doing so to take this alternative.

I partly agree with this but I would argue that the Rock Road, particularly inbound along Blackrock College gates, is a dangerous road. It's a very narrow dual-carriageway in both directions with a speed limit of 50km/h. A bus driving at the speed limit coming around the corner would have to take evasive action if there was a cyclist in the same lane, not as much room to manoeuvre as there would be if there was only one lane of traffic.

The road being given dual-carriageway status implies to road users that it's safer than it actually is.

The Rock road isint a dual carriageway. Its single lane with a bus lane. I use it twice a day and find it extremely safe as the bus lane is 7 to 7. There has been some talk of extending the bus lane up Frascati road through Temple Hill over the years but no plans yet.

Anyway hope the cyclist makes a full recovery..

I usually use public transport one day a week and cycle the others and this is on my route at about the same time I'd be passing - give or take 5 minutes. Today was my day this week not to cycle but it kind of makes me re-examine my own behaviour on the bike and awareness of my surroundings. Hopefully this woman gets on OK.

Well if that was the case then the driver is driving dangerously fast for the road.

...and the classified speed limit on that particular stretch is inappropriate. Not unusual though, of course.

I'm not speculating, but given the vague details of this accident, statistically speaking we can assume that speed was probably not a factor.

I do hope she makes a swift recovery.

The rock road is safe enough, there is the odd moron, be they in a car, bus or on a bike, that make it less pleasant. I've had a few unsavoury moments and to be honest if one good thing comes out of this it might be that we see more Garda presence on the road. One thing that is all too common is people undertaking at speed in the bus lane.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make there. Wouldn't that apply to anyone in any vehicle on any road who drives blindly into a bend? Nothing to do with cyclists. It could be a pedestrian, an animal, a tractor, a road sweeper or any slow/stopped vehicle.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Just to make this point again - no speculation and no statement of what you may or may not have witnessed

Please await official statements on the condition of anyone involved

Likewise do not speculate over cause, blame, vehicles involved etc

    Thanks

I used the bus driver example because cyclists who use that stretch of the Rock Road share it with a bus lane. Of course I agree that anyone in any vehicle on any road has to be prepared for what's coming around a blind corner. But road design has a part to play too.

The point I'm trying to make is that that particular stretch of road is dangerous. The lanes are too narrow!

Edit: I appreciate that it's not a dual-carriageway - thanks for the correction, Seaswimmer! What I meant was that there are two lanes side-by-side.

The Live Drive twitter account is reporting that the frascati road outbound is still closed.

EDIT: The road reopened just as I posted.

    Jesus that's awful news.

I cycle that route a few times a week in and out of work. I have never had any major problems there at all.

I'm not sure what happened but you can be as careful as you like (driving or cycling) but all it takes is a split second for it all to go horribly wrong.

    R.I.P

My sympathies to the poor.girls family. My heart sinks everytime I hear of a cyclist dying on Irish roads. Its one of life's great pleasures being able to hop on a.bike and under your own steam travel from A to B, what taints the whole experience is the fact that everytime you make the.choice to.cycle you are taking your life in your hands. For many cyclists cycling is deeply stressful because we are hyper alert of the dangers.

The old arguments about lack of cycling lanes, careless drivers, cyclists breaking red lights (not suggesting in this case) ,drivers speeding will all be made, essentially its up to all.road users to share the roads with care and attention. Certainly owners of mechanised vehicles Should bear their responsibility, and the bigger the vehicle the greater the care needed.

Again all of this will mean little to the.victims family on this awful day.

very much agreed. its a sad aspect of irish society that a good argument on joe and its ilk substitutes for responsible and consistent leglislative and infrastructural policy. the fact that its tragic is all the more reason to keep focused on that fight for improvements. sadly i can predict that anyone making too much noise in the media will be accused of 'using the tragedy for their own ends'. that is how nothing changes.

responsible action and care on the roads is the best sympathy anyone can express

Just to clarify, Dirk was referring to another post that the poster had deleted themselves

I deleted your post Zyzz as there was an element of speculation involved. This tragic incident is in the hands of the authorities and they can determine cause and/or blame

To all the other posters who posted information that I deleted, we have to await official confirmation and that often does not happen until next of kin are informed. No-one wants to hear any detail about such incidents that may affect a loved one via an internet forum

Can I now ask that we cease any discussion of the road lay-out, any perceived dangers etc and leave this as a condolances thread

    Thanks
