Boards unmoderated for a day

I've always found Boards.ie to be well moderated and that most posters are genuine people. With all the talk of internet trolling in the news, I wonder are Boards.ie users just as bad as any social media site. Are Boards.ie users only well behaved because the site is heavily moderated.

I wonder what the outcome of a unmoderated Boards.ie day experiment would tell us.

Id imagine we'd all be in court the week after.

The outcome would be around 6500 banned accounts on day 2!

depends on the time of day, I get on late if I'm working what with eating and breathing and stuff but there's definitely less genuine posts/posters on at that time and a lot more trolling and muppetry. (my guess is average age of posters at that time is 12-15 yr olds)

Some people thought starting 11 parody threads was a good idea. They were wrong.

quite the opposite, it was well moderated, no abuse, no trees destroyed and the mods did exactly what they always do, moderate the immoderate.

It was a group of posters with a similar sense of humour having a bit of craic. No one was abusive. It would have just run it's course.

In fairness, if it was that serious last night, how come there was only one ban handed out? I ban that has since been lifted, by the way. AFAIK, not even a slap on the wrist for a single other poster. One of the Mods in question was even in on the joke.

Hardly 'ruining it for everybody' now, was it? If I see a thread I'm not interested in, I find the best course of action is to not open it.

They should unmoderate it for 5 days, it would be hard to keep watch and I'd reckon the place would be torched by the time they return.

I actually suggested moving the thread to the Nest. Twice. The AH Mod who was in on the joke disagreed. And left it where it was. And left it open.

    ;)

here's the thing, just because a mod decides its fun doesn't make it acceptable to the rest of the users, moderators use their own discretion when deciding what's "dickish" which sometimes leaves the moderators blind to their own dickishness. They're not exactly immune to it. Tbh I just ventured elsewhere because the first page of AH had five seperate threads all with a slight on the same topic because it was hilarious. "where do I go in Dublin to.." etc etc etc x 5

I think you missed something. And I dont mean just the humour, which if don't get, then just walk on.

Companies spend hundreds of thousands on market research for information that could be gleamed from that thread accumulated in hours.
Not that that was the impetus, but it was of curiosity.

And on several other levels it probably was far more interesting than some of the cringeworthily boring threads that pass through here, day in, day out,
sometimes I almost beg for an update to the weather thread.
AH isn't just meant to be a information forum, far from it, if I went down the pub and found the citizens advice bureau.....

Right, now I am defending nonsense, with sense, where is the forum for that?

If you wouldnt say it in public, then dont say it on boards.

People do need mods to be around (not matter how much I despise the power hungry Dark Lords :P )

If we had no mods, things would get pretty out of hand pretty quick and we would be back to the auld 'flame wars' situation.

Freedom to comment, with a light touch of moderation.

The thing is, there isn't a single thread on here that's compulsory. If I might offer an illustrative example... On the mobile version of the site, under the 'Latest' tab, I invariably see 'Airsoft' this that or the other. Now, I've no interest in Airsoft. I actually think Airsoft is a bit daft. Wannabe soldiers and all that. Sometimes my screen shows a huge proportion of Airsoft threads.

My ingenious solution is not to open them, thereby not being annoyed by them.

    Try it.

It was a one off, that was part of the fun. I could read back through 'legendary threads' and think wtf? Sometimes you just have to be involved to appreciate the hilarity of it.

Was it juvenile? Yes, but funny nonetheless.

I'd be interested to know why Volunteer mods do it? I mean Boards.ie would collapse without doubt without the time they put in.

Why do they do it? All the things they have to put up with, around the clock for sweet FA. Whats the deal here? What motivation or reward can they get?

And the other side of the coin, some Mods can be heavy handed, making unreasonable knee jerk reactions and when challenged, make the situation worse for the boards.ie member.

I have a suspicion that Admin don't want to take volunteers too much to task in case they piss them off and the volunteer leaves.

How long before this thread is locked?

Perhaps and that was already pointed out, twice, Are you in on the joke?

But seriously and I did point this out, that the new version of boards is likely to pull more new threads in to AH while the quieter forums get quieter.
And eventually more people assume this is the place to go.
Perhaps it is up to mods perhaps to redirect them immediately if they can, otherwise, you will complain when they end up getting the AH treatment.
Try bringing your work in to a pub and see how long your friends keep to your topic before eventually taking the p, or leading you in to some completely different train of thought. It happens in real life, it'll happen here.

ok so one thread is not compulsory, maybe two, now extend it to five and what you'e got is a little clique playing with each other at the expense of the entire forum. Ironically all I see here in this thread is the same circle jerk and thanks whores.

Some forums are very heavily moderated and others the mods seem to have a but more leniency so I could see the heavily modded forums remaining pretty much as they are and the more lenient ones descending into chaos.

It wasn't a clique, though. I just got involved with the original thread near the end. It was all started by double posts and then a thread that was mistakenly started 3 times. An unusual event that is unlikely to happen again.

I get the impression that trolls, spammers and assholes piss off the mods by giving them a lot of work to do. The mods in turn can be a little over sensitive at times leading to closed threads, infractions, bans etc when not really warranted.

In short, I think all mods could do with the few days off. And all the trolls, spammers & assholes could have a field day & get it out of their system. Then after a week, restored the DB back to the way it was on day 0.
